DEVIN TOWNSEND: The Rebirth of Devin Townsend

Few artists in metal have been as single-handedly influential and prolific in the late 90’s/2000’s as DEVIN TOWNSEND. Despite amassing a diehard fanbase and the high praise and respect of his peers, Devin‘s personal life was suffering. After taking a self-imposed sabbatical in conjunction with the end of STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, Devin went through a soul searching journey and a reevaluation of his life.

APESHIT spoke to the mad scientist of metal before his show in LA earlier this year. We’re happy to report that not only is Devin back with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration, he’s here to be bigger and stronger than ever.

PRIMORDIAL: Passion Aflame

When you think about countries where great metal is from, Ireland might be the last place you’d think of. However, Irish heroes PRIMORDIAL have been paying their dues in the (international) underground scene since 1991 with their unique style of folk/black metal. While groundbreaking albums such as A Journey’s End have drawn the adoration of tried and true underground fans, the band’s new monumental album, To the Nameless Dead, seems to have finally broken through to the rest of the metal masses at large. We spoke to vocalist Alan Nemtheanga about the band’s vision and source of inspiration as well as a host of other topics including their love of BATHORY.

SOULFLY: Soul World Order

As the world’s only true world (music) metal band, SOULFLY has been breaking down barriers and expanding the scope of metal since 1997. Band leader Max Cavalera‘s unique yet influential style has helped establish their own niche in the metal world incorporating tribal music of his native Brazil, reggae, dub, punk, thrash, and death metal. His pioneering efforts with SEPULTURA help put Brazil on the metal map, and in turn, has given him and SOULFLY the opportunity to bring their music to all parts of the world. APESHIT caught up with Max during SOULFLY‘s latest U.S. tour to learn more about his musical roots, connecting with fans, and his special art of guitar riffing.

CANNIBAL CORPSE: Killing for a Living

Killing sprees, severed limbs, maggots, and zombies aren’t what eighteen year careers are typically made of. But death metal’s biggest and bloodiest band, CANNIBAL CORPSE, has done just that. They’ve stabbed, hacked, slashed, and killed their way to the brutal tune of hundreds of thousands of albums sold, while winning over legions of fans and upsetting a few parents and politicians along the way. The band’s latest album, Kill, ranks as arguably their best albums in years and sees them at the top of their game. APESHIT met up with talkative frontman, George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher, during the last date of the Sounds of the Underground Tour in Los Angeles this past summer. Holding nothing back, he revealed his thoughts on the current state of the CANNIBAL CORPSE camp, censorship, and the driving force behind the band.

DARK TRANQUILLITY: Locus of Control

Swedish metal purveyors, DARK TRANQUILLITY, are old veterans in a scene dominated by young upstarts. Character, their seventh album, thunders with artistic ingenuity that many of today’s bands strive for but may never reach. This can only be attributed to the band’s continued focus and sense of perspective that allows them to produce high caliber metal without extraneous interference. The new album, blast beats, Korea, and kindergarten: the always charismatic frontman, Mikael Stanne, broke it all down for APESHIT.

THE HAUNTED: Takin’ Care of Business

Thrash titans, THE HAUNTED, should’ve collapsed years ago. But they’ve defeated record label woes and original band members leaving (and returning) to remain as one of the most relevant extreme bands on the planet. With the return of original vocalist, Peter Dolving, and a resulting brilliant, new album in rEVOLVEr, THE HAUNTED are set to climb higher than ever. APESHIT spoke with Peter during their most recent U.S. tour with SHADOWS FALL and (the ill-fated) DAMAGEPLAN. What APESHIT found was an artist even more charismatic and straight up than his music.
