NADER SADEK – In the Flesh

Avant-garde artist Nader Sadek has brought his project to life with a supergroup of metal warriors respected in the underground scene. By recruiting Steve Tucker (ex-MORBID ANGEL), Rune Eriksen (AVA INFERI, ex-MAYHEM), and Flo Mounier (CRYPTOPSY) as the core of the band, this brutal album coincides with his art and vision. While the project is called “NADER SADEK,” Sadek himself is the mastermind and “director” while the musicians bring In the Flesh to life.

The eerie intro features the maniacal sounds of MAYHEM vocalist Attila Csihar, and leads directly into the brutalizing track, “Petrophilia.” The track pounds away with the masterful blasting and double bass magic of Mounier, and some of the riffs are quite reminiscent of MAYHEM’s Ordo Ad Chao. Tracks like “Soulless” are largely death metal influenced, with huge hints of CRYPTOPSY found within them, and guest shredder Destructhor (MORBID ANGEL) provides some ZYKLON-esque leads to balance out the culmination of thrashy black/death metal riffs.

Mechanic Idolatry” is catchy, brutal, and utilizes the skills of all the musicians involved. Tucker’s vocals never sounded better, and Mounier attacks the drum kit with a barrage of continuous double bass and flashy cymbal hits. While all of the songs on In the Flesh are excellent, “Sulffer” is one of the best tracks, and some riffs sound lifted from MAYHEM’s Chimera album. There’s no better track to end an album such as “Nigredo in Necromance,” with a crescendo leading up to a monstrous riff and solo, and finally crashing down to a melodic end. The album is short, with six real tracks, and three artistic tracks that break up the brutality, and the listener will yearn for more.

In the Flesh is an amazing mish mash of the disharmonic riffs from MAYHEM, the brutality of MORBID ANGEL, and the complex speed and intricate drumming of CRYPTOPSY. Forget the atrocities of CRYPTOPSY’s The Unspoken King or MORBID ANGEL’s Illud Divinum Insanus, and feed your ears with this album instead. The artwork and packaging of the CD also illustrates how Sadek went through great lengths to produce an amazing product. There is no doubt that In the Flesh will end up as one of the top albums of 2011 in many polls at the end of the year. (Season of Mist)

Video of the Day: The Hidden Gem in KEEP OF KALESSIN’s Back Catalogue

Tried and true underground metal warriors are all familiar with Norway’s KEEP OF KALESSIN. No doubt they’re a worthy band with good records. However, one of their releases, the rare Reclaim EP, is something that may have eluded the access of many. If you can find this hard to find release, I suggest you snatch it up immediately.

Band mainman/guitarist, Obsidian C., recruited black metal legends, Attila Csihar (vocals) and Frost (drums), for this glorious undertaking. What resulted is one of the coolest pieces of black metal in an easy to enjoy EP format.

JARBOE – Mahakali

Legendary vocalist/avant garde rock pioneer Jarboe brings her ethereal voice and vision to her latest album, Mahakali. It takes only a few seconds for the album to take your take hold of your spirit and mind as Jarboe‘s hypnotic siren call glide through opening track, “Mahakali, of Terrifying Countenance.” Atmospheric, emotional, and powerful, the band quickly traverses much terrain shifting from the brooding, the dark, the desolate, and the sobering. There are just enough layers of instrumentation and musical darkness to set the mood without overloading the listener. Particularly, there is plenty of tasty percussion work to be found.

There are plenty of guest appearances from Attila Csihar (MAYHEM), Colin Marston (DYSRHYTHMIA, BEHOLD…THE ARCTOPUS), Josh Graham (NEUROSIS, A STORM OF LIGHT), and Phil Anselmo (DOWN). “The Soul Continues” is an absolutely fantastic track combining the black and sinister, low-end vocals of Attila Csihar with absolutely haunting vocal lines by Jarboe. The song is a great juxtaposition of different vocals stylings coming together to create a very powerful single expression. If there was ever a song that perfectly captured the sounds of a nightmare, “A Sea of Blood and Hollow Screaming…” would be it. The sheer power of the song is undeniable. Phil Anselmo‘s lead vocal contribution on the melancholic, acoustic song, “Overthrown,” is a great showcase of his creativity and ability to bear his soul in pure honesty.

Before you realize it, the album is over and the silence really resonates within your mind after being taken on such a trip. Mahakali is perfect for those seeking something more and something that is true and powerful. Many rewards await the listener. (The End Records)

New SUNN O))) to Drop in May

SUNN O))) are set to release their seventh studio album, entitled Monoliths & Dimensions. The album features guest musicians, enigmatic Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (MAYHEM, TORMENTOR, etc.), and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (EARTH), as well as Julian Priester (who worked with SUN RA in the 50s, John Coltrane‘s African Brass band, and Herbie Hancock‘s Sextant band) and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There’s also an upright bass trio, French and English horns, harp and flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman’s choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney.

The band took an approach concentrating on more of allusion toward the timbre of feedback and the instruments involved, so the piece is really illusory, beautiful and not entirely linear. They stated that the end product is “the most musical piece we’ve done, and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we’ve laid to tape.”

The album was recorded and mixed by Randall Dunn and Mell Dettmer at various points over the last two years, and will be released late May 2008. Monoliths & Dimensions is practice in density, gravity and momentum.

Monoliths & Dimensions track listing:
Aghartha” (17:34)
Big Church [megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért]” (09:43)
Hunting & Gathering (Cydonia)” (10:02)
Alice” (16:21)
