Underground Gems: The Gummo Movie Soundtrack

GummoIn 1997, one of the most fucked up movies of all time, Gummo, hit theaters in the U.S. Few movies could match the story of a bunch of sick and twisted kids. I’m still scarred to this day.

In any case, Gummo had one of the best (extreme metal) soundtracks of all time featuring bands that were still strictly underground at the time: BRUJERIA, BURZUM, EYEHATEGOD, NIFELHEIM, BETHLEHEM (remember them?), and ABSU. The APESHIT goons highly recommend it.

All-Star BATHORY Tribute Band TWILIGHT OF THE GODs to Release Original Material

Season of Mist just inked a deal with all-star band TWILIGHT OF THE GODS. Initially joining forces as a tribute band to BATHORY, singer Alan Averill (PRIMORDIAL), guitarists Rune Eriksen (AVA INFERI, AURA NOIR) and Patrik Lindgren (THYRFING), bassist Frode Glesnes (EINHERJER) and drummer Nick Barker (LOCK UP) recently started to write their own material, which should end up on a full-length album some time next year.

The band issued the following statement: “We are proud to sign a worldwide deal for TWILIGHT OF THE GODS with Season of Mist… So first question, why? The idea originally was to piece together an international band to pay tribute to BATHORY. Nothing more and nothing less. A challenge and a homage. We toured the BATHORY set last year and played some festivals here and there. We never say never again but some form of line was drawn under last years triumphant set at Ragnarok festival which made the whole journey seem worthwhile.

“We were asked to re-record BATHORY classics and offered this and that to make DVDs and live albums. Never in a million years was this going to happen… Yet the chemistry was so good between the five members we talked about writing our own material. It seemed a shame to file away the energy and synergy on a dusty shelf somewhere when new possibilities were open to all of us.

“Life after all is about new challenges and journeys so in the month of October the five members of TWILIGHT OF THE GODS convened in Southern Portugal for a writing session. On the back of this a contract was signed and things began to take shape. None of us in our respective bands and pasts have ever played straight forward Heavy Metal and this is what TOTG is shaping up to be… Sure there are some Epic parts and some 70s rock influences but the vast majority of the material sounds truly classic metal.

“Right now we are looking at going into the studio sometime in the first couple of months of 2012. So expect a full on Heavy Metal album crafted by a motley crue with over 40 albums experience within them and two decades each individually sharpening their swords…”

WATAIN’s Lawless Darkness to be Released on June 7th; Maryland Deathfest Appearance Announced

Lawless Darkness has been announced as the title of the fourth WATAIN album to be released on June 7th.

“The title symbolizes the unbound chaotic potential of that which is void of light,” frontman E. comments. “The light that defines, the light that shapes and restricts. The light by which the forces of law and order uphold their reign. In the absence of that light lies the wellspring of WATAIN: in Lawless Darkness.

“With this album and in all of our efforts with WATAIN we aim to capture the hungry madness and glimmering purity of darkness beyond illusion, the void that holds all yet where naught is manifest, the primordial tomb into which all the vanity of man and his creation shall collapse: indeed, The Lawless Darkness!

Lawless Darkness shall be seen as a monument erected in honour of that collapse and a dedication to all those brave souls, who have willingly dared to venture the winding paths towards it.”

“Shed not thy light on me
Get thee hence, thoughts defined
Blind me not with your bright structures
For I am of the night

“Let not thy rays caress me
Judged by them I will not be
For they are the light that governs man
And I am the enemy”

In other news, WATAIN will return to the United States once again in late May as part of the annual aural offensive known as the Maryland Deathfest, appearing with SODOM, OBITUARY, ENTOMBED, POSSESSED, NECROPHOBIC and countless more. See the complete fest lineup at: http://www.marylanddeathfest.com.

And, after completing the regular portion of their set at this year’s Sweden Rock Festival in on June 12th, WATAIN will return to the stage for a unique 45-minute tribute concert featuring classic BATHORY songs. The event promises to be even more special as the BATHORY part of WATAIN‘s performance will be introduced by none other than late BATHORY mainman Quorthon‘s father and producer, Börje “Boss” Forsberg. “It feels great to have Boss participating in a part of the show, since he, in a way, is the only living link to the BATHORY myth,” says E. “It will still be a tribute show and nothing else, but we are, of course, honored to be able to do it with his blessing!”

PRIMORDIAL: Passion Aflame

When you think about countries where great metal is from, Ireland might be the last place you’d think of. However, Irish heroes PRIMORDIAL have been paying their dues in the (international) underground scene since 1991 with their unique style of folk/black metal. While groundbreaking albums such as A Journey’s End have drawn the adoration of tried and true underground fans, the band’s new monumental album, To the Nameless Dead, seems to have finally broken through to the rest of the metal masses at large. We spoke to vocalist Alan Nemtheanga about the band’s vision and source of inspiration as well as a host of other topics including their love of BATHORY.

ENSLAVED: Progressive

Norway’s ENSLAVED began their musical journey back in 1991 and have perserved through, arguably, a more difficult path to success than some of their Norwegian brethen. Through numerous line-up changes, record labels, and distribution problems, they continue to triumph with an unwaivering artistic vision and subsequent, ever growing success. APESHIT spoke to ENSLAVED vocalist/bassist Grutle Kjellson during their most recent U.S. tour earlier this year about critical acclaim, winning Norwegian grammys, progressive rock, and what makes the current line-up of the band so special.
