VOIVOD and PORCUPINE TREE Members Contribute to MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal

Bazillion Points Books is proud to announce the late 2010 release of MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal, by Jeff Wagner – a former editor of Metal Maniacs magazine and veteran supporter of metal’s most risk-taking bands. Wagner analyzes the heady side of metal in this exhaustive history of a relentlessly ambitious musical subculture. The book features extensive original artwork throughout by VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin, including the lavish front cover.

The book’s foreword was penned by PORCUPINE TREE founder Steven Wilson. Revered in progressive rock circles, the multi-talented Wilson is also highly respected by metalheads as producer of three landmark OPETH albums. As he writes: “In Jeff Wagner‘s MEAN DEVIATION, we now have a definitive book on the relationship between metal and progressive music, and the myriad variation of styles that it has given rise to…In the meantime, metal continues to mutate and evolve, sometimes in the most unexpected ways, demonstrating that it is far from spent and is, in fact, the most flexible of musical forms.”

Beginning with 1970s progressive rock acts RUSH and KING CRIMSON, MEAN DEVIATION unfurls a colorful tapestry of sounds and styles, from the “Big Three” of 1980s prog metal-QUEENSRŸCHE, FATES WARNING, and DREAM THEATER – to extreme pioneers VOIVOD, WATCHTOWER, and ARCTURUS. As sparks of inspiration spread to obscure outposts in Scandinavia, Florida, and Japan, progressive metal burst into full creative flame with the successes of prog metal overlords OPETH, MESHUGGAH, TOOL, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, and many others.

“One thing prog metal certainly is, is metal,” Wagner continues. “Hard and bold and brash, but refined, adulterated, and mutated. Progressive metal is heavy metal taken somewhere illuminating and sometimes bizarre.”

Weighing in at 400 pages, the heavily-illustrated book includes a 16-page color photo insert, a constellation of appendixes, and a full index. For more information, and to preorder, visit:

CRADLE OF FILTH to Release Biography, The Gospel of Filth, on Halloween

The Gospel of Filth is an all-encompassing, coffee-table-sized book about the U.K.’s CRADLE OF FILTH, written by renowned music journalist Gavin Baddeley (Dissecting Marilyn Manson, Lucifer Rising) and the outspoken vocalist of the band, Dani Filth.

Says Baddeley of the work, “The Gospel of Filth must be the most ambitious project I’ve ever undertaken. Exploring every aspect of CRADLE OF FILTH was just the first step in a journey which takes us to the furthest reaches of the dark side. The result is, I believe a definitive Gothic guidebook, an unholy text of truly biblical proportions!”

The volume is a massive 500-plus page book that includes interviews with all members of CRADLE OF FILTH, past and present, offering their own personal takes on the world of the macabre. In addition, it contains edifying narratives from many of today’s dark music ringleaders, including H.I.M., TYPE O NEGATIVE, WITHIN TEMPTATION, PARADISE LOST, SLAYER, GORGOROTH, BEHEMOTH, and many others.

Beyond the musical realm, The Gospel of Filth also includes discussion in dark art and poetry with exclusive interviews with English historian Peter Ackroyd, filmmaker Dario Argento, photographer/author Sir Simon Marsden, and artist JK Potter.

Dani Filth comments, “This book is the result of five years of painstaking research and investigation into the far-flung corners of the occult, the realms of literal darkness and all things fun, fearful and macabre. From scream queens to fever dreams and everything in between, this black grimoire uncovers the secrets and history of the esoteric and forbidden and is an absolute must for any lost soul curious about the darker side of life – be it a craving for vampirism, witchcraft, horror movies, serial killers, femme fatales, illicit fiction, exotic sex and drugs, black masses, or gothic fairytales. Making Halloween last all year or just a passing interest in the musical macabre, this book stands like a roadmap to Hell and beyond.”

The first pressing of the book is a signed and numbered, leather-bound, hardcover volume featuring a bonus chapter written entirely by Filth and is only available online at www.thegospeloffilth.com. It will be followed by hardcover and trade paperback editions with different cover art. The hardcover edition will also be limited to online availability, and the paperback (which does not contain the bonus chapter) will be sold in retailers worldwide.  The initial release is scheduled for Halloween 2009.

EMPEROR Guitar Tab Book Confirmed for January 23rd Release

Candlelight Records has confirmed January 23 as the North American release date for EMPEROR‘s Scattered Ashes: A Decade of Emperial Wrath tab book.  The 132-page oversized book will include guitar tablature, transcribed by vocalist/guitarist Ihsahn himself, for 13 EMPEROR classes as contained on the band’s 2003 compilation of the same name.  Additionally, the book will include a foreword Ihsahn and a value-added play-along cd.

The transcriptions found on Scattered Ashes is set to include full transcriptions for both guitars (separating out parts played by Ihsahn and Samoth) plus bass guitar tabs and full lyrics.

Ihsahn comments on the book: “In my experience as a guitar teacher I’ve come across a lot of transcribed metal material. However, when looking for material covering the more extreme forms of metal I found there were definite shortcomings and hence came the idea to do a tab book on EMPEROR . As tab books were such an important part of my early years as a guitar player, I hope this book too may be helpful and inspiring to guitarists with a passion for extreme music.”

The full tracklisting for Scattered Ashes is as follows:
1. “Curse You All Men
2. “The Tongue Of Fire
3. “The Majesty Of The Nightsky
4. “Cosmic Keys To My Creation And Times
