Following the demise of CATHEDRAL, guitar god Gaz Jennings has returned with his new band, DEATH PENALTY. After releasing the Sign of Times/Seven Flames 7″, the band is set to release their self-titled full-length debut on September 16th via Rise Above Records. Expect a new mix of doom, NWOBHM, and other elements.
“When Cathedral split I didn’t have any intention of getting another band together,” Gaz admits. “I wanted to do a record, because Lee [Dorrian, CATHEDRAL front man and Rise Above Records boss] has been saying for years that he’d give me a deal! But all my time was taken up writing stuff forCathedral. I had a few bits and bobs lying around, so I started writing material a few years back and that’s where it all started. And now the album is ready to go.”
CATHEDRAL vocalist/Rise Above Records boss, Lee Dorian, recently recorded a video wrap up for Rise Above Records‘ releases this year, including CATHEDRAL‘s swan song, The Last Spire. He provides some really cool info on all the label’s bands and releases. Doom!
CATHEDRAL‘s final album, The Last Spire, will be released in North America on April 30th, 2013. Recorded at Orgone Studios in London, produced by Lee Dorrian and Garry Jennings with assistance, mixing by Jamie Gomez Arellano, and art by Dave Patchett and Arik Roper.
The first single to be released, Tower of Silence, can be heard below:
The end is near for legendary British doom metal band, CATHEDRAL, who have announced plans to disband after their next studio album, which they plan to release in 2012. Vocalist Lee Dorian provided the following statement:
“It’s simply time for us to bow out. Twenty one years is a very long time and it’s almost a miracle that we managed to come this far!
“We’ve had a great time during CATHEDRAL‘s existence and it has literally been our life. It’s just time to move on and leave our recorded legacy to linger.
“Our latest album The Guessing Game is exactly where we wanted to be after all this time. Staying in one place, being repetitive and predictable is something we wanted to avoid right from the off.
“We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to those special people who have supported CATHEDRAL over the years. It may sound like a cliché but it’s certainly true – we simply wouldn’t have been able to do it without you, thanks!”
Earlier this year, CATHEDRAL celebrated their 20th anniversary performing their entire debut album, Forest of Equilibrium, with the original lineup.
The band are scheduled to make several final live appearances 2011, including dates in Japan and at the Maryland Death Fest. More dates will follow including a farewell London show later in the year.
December is here, so it is time for us, the APESHIT goons, to share with you our list of metal albums that made an impression on us in 2010. Meaningful and meaningless, but sharing is caring. Bang your head and enjoy! Continue reading →
Psychedelic UK based doom metal legends CATHEDRAL, have posted a video trailer offering audio samples from their upcoming record The Guessing Game here:
The Guessing Game will be released on March 26 in Europe and on the unofficial stoner friendly holiday of April 20 in N. America.
Produced once again by Warren Riker (DOWN, CROWBAR), who also took care of the band’s last effort, The Garden Of Unearthly Delights, in 2005, The Guessing Game is one wild and unpredictable ride with one of the most unique and exciting acts the metal genre has got to offer. For the first time in the band’s history, they have recorded a double album that boasts thirteen tracks offering a colourful variety of musical styles and lyrical themes: “Requiem For The Voiceless“, for example, is pure, down ‘n’ out crawling doom — and the first animal-rights song in doom metal history! Then you’ll get classic stomping and grooving CATHEDRAL material with the catchy “Painting In The Dark“, plus many songs wading through psychedelic and proggy waters — especially “Funeral Of Dreams“, featuring none other than Alison O’ Donnell of MELLOW CANDLE (’70s Irish folk rock band) fame doing guest vocals.
It comes as no surprise that this time around CATHEDRAL went as far as to include exotic instrumentation such as mellotron and sitar. And pay special attention to the lyrics of “Journeys Into Jade“; Lee Dorrian and Co. are celebrating 20 years of CATHEDRAL with this one!
The Guessing Game track listing:
01. “Immaculate Misconception” (02:24)
02. “Funeral Of Dreams” (08:28)
03. “Painting In The Dark” (06:18)
04. “Death Of An Anarchist” (07:12)
05. “The Guessing Game” (03:08)
06. “Edwige’s Eyes” (07:08)
07. “Cats, Incense, Candles & Wine” (06:01)
01. “One Dimensional People” (02:30)
02. “The Casket Chasers” (06:41)
03. “La Noche del Buque Maldito (a.k.a. Ghost Ship of The Blind Dead)” (05:46)
04. “The Running Man” (08:46)
05. “Requiem for the Voiceless” (09:50)
06. “Journey Into Jade” (10:36)
British doom rockers CATHEDRAL will commence recording their ninth full-length album, The Guessing Game, in November. The recording will take place at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire, U.K. with producer Warren Riker (DOWN, CROWBAR). Some song titles include:

“The Casket Chasers”
“Funeral of Dreams”
“Death of an Anarchist”
