CRADLE OF FILTH: Total Fucking Darkness Demo to Get Vinyl Treatment

After more than two decades, Total Fucking Darkness, the infamous third demo from extreme metal pioneers, CRADLE OF FILTH, will be unleashed on gatefold double LP and digipak CD via Mordgrimm May 5, 2014.

The undertaking was helmed by vocalist Dani Filth, former guitarist Paul Ryan (currently of THE KING IS BLIND) and Cacophonous Records founder Frater Nihil, who first signed CRADLE OF FILTH, in an effort to bring fans old and new a remastered version of the demo along with material that had been sitting in the vaults for twenty years.

Given new life at Turan Studio in Oxford with engineer Tim Turan (who has worked on everything from EMPEROR to THIN LIZZY), Total Fucking Darkness commences with “Spattered In Faeces,” the only surviving track from the now mythical Goetia sessions, followed on Side A and the rest of Side B with the recordings from the Total Fucking Darkness demo. Side C offers up another previously unreleased hymn with “Devil Mayfair (Advocatus Diaboli),” recorded in a rehearsal studio on Samhain 1992, followed by three more tracks from the same session, a further hint of the material that would have featured on the aborted Goetia album. Two short instrumental movements from former CRADLE OF FILTH keyboardist Ben Ryan are also included.

Housed in a heavy gatefold sleeve with paintings featuring the perverse visions of Radio 1 Presenter and occult artist, Daniel Carter, the legendary recording will be released in an initial mail-order edition of 666 copies, unleashed in an unholy trinity of three two-color, 180-gram vinyl variants limited to 222 copies each; orange/black, blue/grey and grey/black. Each copy includes a limited edition booklet with a foreword by Dani Filth and formerly unseen photos from the band archives. A retail version in blue vinyl with insert, and a digipak CD, will be available from Amazon and other outlets on May 5, 2014, with the limited edition version slated for release two weeks earlier.

THE HAUNTED: First Music From Revamped Line-up “Eye of the Storm”

Swedish’s THE HAUNTED have begun the comeback after losing three-fifths of its band with the launch of their first single, “Eye of the Storm.” Check it out:

Eye of the Storm is available as a limited edition 7″ and as a digital single, which both feature three tracks.

The single marks THE HAUNTED‘s recording debut of the band’s revamped line-up, which includes founding members Jensen (guitars) and Jonas Björler (bass), returning members Marco Aro (vocals) and Adrian Erlandsson (drums), as well as new member Ola Englund (guitars).

Jensen comments: “There aren’t superlatives enough to describe how much the band has longed for these three songs to be released. We are sure fans have been anxious to know what the band sounds like today after all the turmoil and old members leaving and new members joining. We feel that these three songs represent the band perfectly. We are currently working on the new album, an album that will be filled to the brim with what we know to be ‘THE HAUNTED‘. We’ll start doing gigs this spring and we’ll do festivals all over the place this summer. Get in touch with the festivals you visit (and behave like an animal at) and tell them to get us on the bill! THE HAUNTED is back. Play it loud. No. Louder.”

CRADLE OF FILTH – The Manticore and Other Horrors

Cradle of FIlth - Manticore and Other HorrorsIt seems like time has flown by as our favorite British vampires are now on album number ten.  Despite changing interest levels from metal fans as a whole, CRADLE continue to carry on and they’ve made one hell of an album in The Manticore and Other Horrors.

The album carries virtually all of CRADLE‘s hallmarks but with more of a focus on just playing full on metal.  Female vocals, long gothic interludes, and the dramatics do not play as prominent a role this time around.  But the most important characteristics of The Manticore and Other Horrors are memorable songs and seamless quality.  The action never slows down to a crawl and the band keeps the song teeming with life.

Throughout The Manticore and Other Horrors, the band reach the upper limits of their talents and produce sheer greatness.  Great riffs, excellent drumming, and magic moments are all over the album.  With 11 total songs, there is more than enough content to thoroughly enjoy.

CRADLE OF FILTH: Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa Artwork Revealed

Everyone’s favorite over-the-top, dramatic, symphonic, black metallers, CRADLE OF FILTH, are back with their ninth studio album, Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa. Set for a November 9th release on Nuclear Blast Records, the album is said to be “the fastest and most brutal album we’ve created to date,” according to frontman Dani Filth. The album artwork (right) was finely crafted by Natalie Shau.

Dani continues to describe the album: “This album is CRADLE at our most sinister and darkened fairytale. A gothic horror themed slay-ride of fervour and perversion; yet amidst the orchestral melodrama and lush, cinematic production, there sits stalwart a ravening beast of furious riffing, flesh ripping vocals and monstrous, unstoppable percussion.”

Okay… not particularly out-of-line with what we’ve come to expect from CRADLE OF FILTH (at least from a selling point).

CRADLE OF FILTH to Release Biography, The Gospel of Filth, on Halloween

The Gospel of Filth is an all-encompassing, coffee-table-sized book about the U.K.’s CRADLE OF FILTH, written by renowned music journalist Gavin Baddeley (Dissecting Marilyn Manson, Lucifer Rising) and the outspoken vocalist of the band, Dani Filth.

Says Baddeley of the work, “The Gospel of Filth must be the most ambitious project I’ve ever undertaken. Exploring every aspect of CRADLE OF FILTH was just the first step in a journey which takes us to the furthest reaches of the dark side. The result is, I believe a definitive Gothic guidebook, an unholy text of truly biblical proportions!”

The volume is a massive 500-plus page book that includes interviews with all members of CRADLE OF FILTH, past and present, offering their own personal takes on the world of the macabre. In addition, it contains edifying narratives from many of today’s dark music ringleaders, including H.I.M., TYPE O NEGATIVE, WITHIN TEMPTATION, PARADISE LOST, SLAYER, GORGOROTH, BEHEMOTH, and many others.

Beyond the musical realm, The Gospel of Filth also includes discussion in dark art and poetry with exclusive interviews with English historian Peter Ackroyd, filmmaker Dario Argento, photographer/author Sir Simon Marsden, and artist JK Potter.

Dani Filth comments, “This book is the result of five years of painstaking research and investigation into the far-flung corners of the occult, the realms of literal darkness and all things fun, fearful and macabre. From scream queens to fever dreams and everything in between, this black grimoire uncovers the secrets and history of the esoteric and forbidden and is an absolute must for any lost soul curious about the darker side of life – be it a craving for vampirism, witchcraft, horror movies, serial killers, femme fatales, illicit fiction, exotic sex and drugs, black masses, or gothic fairytales. Making Halloween last all year or just a passing interest in the musical macabre, this book stands like a roadmap to Hell and beyond.”

The first pressing of the book is a signed and numbered, leather-bound, hardcover volume featuring a bonus chapter written entirely by Filth and is only available online at www.thegospeloffilth.com. It will be followed by hardcover and trade paperback editions with different cover art. The hardcover edition will also be limited to online availability, and the paperback (which does not contain the bonus chapter) will be sold in retailers worldwide.  The initial release is scheduled for Halloween 2009.

CRADLE OF FILTH Announce New Drummer

Following yesterday’s announcement of Adrian Erlandsson‘s departure from CRADLE OF FILTH, the band have wasted no time securing a new drummer in Marthus (a.k.a. Martin Å karoupka). Born in the Czech Republic, Marthus, who the band describe as “a fine gent who’s skills are second to none,” has previously played in GALACTIC INDUSTRY and INNER FEAR. Marthus will continue to play the rest of CRADLE OF FILTH‘s current European tour.

Drummer Adrian Erlandsson Quits CRADLE OF FILTH

Adrian Erlandsson has officially announced his departure from CRADLE OF FILTH after about seven years of service.  His announcement follows the recent release of CRADLE OF FILTH‘s latest album, Thornography, as well as his increased involvement with several new bands including NEMHAIN (which is fronted by Erlandsson‘s wife, fetish model Morrigan Hel; a.k.a. Amber England) and NEEDLEEYE.

The former AT THE GATES/THE HAUNTED drummer made the official announcement via his MySpace page:

“It’s finally official, i have parted ways with CRADLE OF FILTH. To concentrate on all other interesting musical projects that I have going at the moment.

“The main one is NEMHAIN. We have just filmed a video for the song called ‘Ana‘ so keep your eyes open for that. The music in NEMHAIN is very different to the other stuff that i have been in the past but it lies very close to bands that i grew up listening too like RAMONES, MOTORHEAD.

“The other band i am working with is currently unnamed. We have been working on songs since the beginning of this summer and believe me they CRUSH!!!!  The other members of the band will be made official very soon!! It is all serious players from across the globe that have left their mark on metal history in a big way with their past bands!!!  We are currently working on a demo and have nine CRUSHING songs to choose from so stay tuned!!!

“Metal as we know it today will be no more!!

“My official website is currently being redone and will be relaunced very soon!! In the meantime feel free to message me via myspace!!”

CRADLE OF FILTH – Thornography

While CRADLE OF FILTH stirs up a variety of opinions and accusations with the mere mention of their name, one can always count on them to continue forging ahead with reckless abandon regardless of criticisms and praise from the fanfare. Their newest release, Thornography, is written to be much more visceral than the previous release, Nymphetamine, but CRADLE OF FILTH put a different twist as always to their already twisted sound. Dani Filth experiments with some different vocal stylings such as more spoken word phrases, heavily processed vocals, and an attempt at cleaner singing in the same ball park as artists such as Anders Friden of IN FLAMES fame. The end result is a mixed bag. Credit should be given where credit is due for the band’s continuing attempt at evolving its sound, but such creative direction used on this album would have been better spent developing more complicated song structures and time signatures. Tracks such as “Tonight in Flames,” “The Byronic Man,” “The Foetus of a New Day Kicking,” and “Temptation” that actually employ the use of Dani‘s new vocalizations come off as trite commercialism instead of progressive songwriting. However, they do add catchy elements to the album. A number of tracks also make use of a rock and roll influence that, although simple in approach, contains guitar hooks that persist in your head long after listening to the album. Fans of post-Midian era CRADLE OF FILTH will also be pleased by the hard rocking tracks, “Dirge Inferno,” “Libertina Grimm,” “I am the Thorn,” “Under Huntress Moon,” and the instrumental track “Rise of the Pentagram.”

Ultimately, this album is superior to CRADLE OF FILTH‘s previous release, but some of the creative decisions behind the songwriting will fail to execute for long-time fans. (Universal / Roadrunner Records)
