Daniel Dismal Speaks to LA Weekly About Murderfest, the Los Angeles Metal Scene

Daniel Dismal, vocalist/mainman of CREMATORIUM and mastermind behind The Los Angeles Murderfest and Church of the 8th Day booking/promotion/management, was recently interviewed by Liz Ohanesian for LA Weekly. Dismal dropped knowledge on the LA metal scene and his (now) successful Murderfest metal festival (which takes place this weekend at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood, CA).

CREMATORIUM: West Coast Shows and New Material

Long running death metal/hardcore stalwarts CREMATORIUM have just confirmed a handful of west coast dates, including appearances alongside BRUTAL TRUTH and at Murderfest 5.0. Here are the dates:

4/4 – The Sets – Tempe, AZ w/ BRUTAL TRUTH
4/5 – Jumping Turtle – San Marcos, CA w/ BRUTAL TRUTH
4/6 – TBA – CA w/ BRUTAL TRUTH
4/8 – Knitting Factory – Hollywood, CA w/ GOATWHORE
4/9 – Knitting Factory – Hollywood, CA (LA Murderfest 5.0)

The band are currently writing and demoing new material for an album that should surface by year’s end. Vocalist Daniel Dismal had this to say about the shows and the new material:

“I am excited to be sharing the stage with longtime friends BRUTAL TRUTH and GOATWHORE, as well as showcase some of the new material we have been working on. I never thought I would see the day where the death metal/hardcore hybrid scene would become so big. We decided now was the time for us to become more active, playing more shows and writing new material. I feel that this is CREMATORIUM’s most volatile and concise music to date. We can’t wait for people to hear our next step in the evolution of the band.”

Daniel Dismal has always been a strong supporter of underground music, through his upstart promotion company Church of the 8th Day, which besides booking shows all year long, is responsible for organizing the Los Angeles Murderfest. CREMATORIUM’s last album, The Process of Endtime was released in 2005 on Prosthetic Records.

CREMATORIUM: Process of Perseverance

Breaking out of L.A.’s local underground scene is no easy feat. Most bands are destined for a lifetime on the local circuit. Long time local staples, CREMATORIUM survived that having taken their DIY work ethic to the next level. They eventually signed a deal with Prosthetic Records in 2002. Now with several national tours under their belt and a solid fanbase, the band are looking to continue their ascent. Dan Dismal gave APESHIT the low down on CREMATORIUM‘s graduation from local band status and his ongoing efforts to help the L.A. metal scene continue to thrive.

JOB FOR A COWBOY – Genesis

Deathcore villains, JOB FOR A COWBOY, have arrived from almost nowhere to sprinkle the metal world with a delightful full-length debut in Genesis. JOB FOR A COWBOY set out to destroy from the get-go and destroy they do. From the brootal vokills of Jonny Davy to the endless double-kick beat-down of Elliot Sellers (who has since been replaced by drummer Jon Rice), JOB FOR A COWBOY impress with destructive conviction and flawless execution. Jonny Davy‘s roaring voice recalls that of CREMATORIUM‘s Dan Dismal‘s–beefy and ferocious but not too guttural. Meanwhile, the guitar work of Ravi Bahdriraju and Bobby Thompson falls a little low in the mix (primarily due to Sellers‘ deliciously loud drumming). Fortunately, the abundance of accented palm-muting, diads, and jumpy fretwork cut through enough to flavor the songs with death metal flair. Still, you can’t escape the “core” with Davy‘s bark and the, at times, near-groovy but totally moshable passages. Genesis is however, nothing near cutting-edge. It is a one-dimensional album of in-your-face deathcore/death metal, save for the one comparatively slower track, “The Divine Falsehood.” But the Arizonian outfit still manage to breath fresh air into a genre that can be stubbornly stale. Let’s hope JOB FOR A COWBOY can take advantage of their step on the scene and continue to rock out with destruction in mind. (Metal Blade Records)

PYREXIA, CREMATORIUM, INFERNAEON Team Up for Summer Tour

Prosthetic Records labelmates CREMATORIUM and INFERNAEON will team up along with SONS OF AZRAEL to provide support for PYREXIA‘s forthcoming headlining run. The two bands are each supporting new material – INFERNAEON‘s debut record, A Symphony of Suffering, was released earlier this year through Prosthetic Records, while CREMATORIUM will showcase new songs from the band’s forthcoming full length and will continue supporting 2005’s The Process of Endtime, which just got pressed as picture disc vinyl and is available for purchase here.

“When we were offered this tour I was like a kid that just found his dad’s gun,” INFERNAEON vocalist Brian Werner says. “PYREXIA was one of my favorite bands for many years. As a matter of fact, their old singer, Keith DeVito, was my vocal mentor…When we went to go record A Symphony of Suffering, he was my first choice as a guest musician for the song March of Death and he really made that song come alive. I remember seeing these guys like 8 years ago in at Milwaukee Metalfest in this theater, once they got done playing the first 4 rows of seats had been ripped out from the floor and there were sufficient injuries and I thought to myself Goddamn that was a fucking show. Since then I have never seen a band play with that kind of intensity so it’s a fucking honor to be sharing the stage with them.”

ABYSMAL DAWN: Blackening the Sky

In the mid 90’s, seminal acts such as DEATH, DISINCARNATE, and CYNIC all made their mark by delivering crushing, technical, guitar-based extreme metal–all while retaining the key element of writing catchy, memorable songs. L.A.’s own ABYSMAL DAWN have taken those lessons and combined them with elements of technical thrash and Scandinavian black metal to give the band’s debut album, From Ashes its own unique flavor. APESHIT spoke with frontman/lead shredder, Charles Elliot, following the band’s first tour with SIX FEET UNDER, KRISIUN, and DECAPITATED last year.
