DOWN will release Down IV Part I – The Purple EP, their first body of new material in five years, on September 18, 2012 via Down Records/Independent Label Group. New song, “Witchtripper,” can be streamed at Rollingstone.com.
The six song EP is the first in a series of four EP’s planned for release over the next year. DOWN will kick off a string of tour dates on release day, beginning in Fort Worth, TX, and ending October 2 in Charlotte, NC.
“I do believe that we have delivered a record that will be accepted and hopefully enjoyed by the DOWN horde – if you will,” says Phil Anselmo. “If you’re looking for a DOWN record, it’s very pure and real.”
“DOWN gives me the platform to be poetic and paint imagery with lyrics,” says Anselmo. “That’s the approach I took. They complement the music and create an ominous feeling. Ultimately, when people consume the words, it’s always their interpretation that matters. I could be image-conscious though when I wrote. It’s not so gut level or street. The darker shit is some of my favorite.”
With an album sales history totaling over 725k, these New Orleans natives are no strangers to success. Their legendary 1995 debut Nola is certified platinum, while Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow (2002) and Down III (2007) remain fan and critical successes.
The new band formed by ex-EYEHATEGOD members sans guitarist Jimmy Bower, OUTLAW ORDER, has signed with Season of Mist. Their debut album, Dragging Down the Enforcer, will be released October 13th.
Frontman Mike IX Williams had this band update:
“New Orleans own EYEHATEGOD have served up 20 years and 7 albums of original, painful and misanthropic feedback laden Hardcore Blues to an ever increasing doomed climate of world-wide despair and degradation and have absolutely managed to have fun doing it. Multiple tours of Europe, the USA and even Japan have seen these southern gentlemen ‘Preaching the End-Time Message’ and influencing new generations of hedonistic roustabouts to spread their Rock-n-Roll nihilism since 1988. The band will play at One-Eyed Jack’s on the 3rd anniversary of Katrina, Friday August 29th with CROWBAR and HELLKONTROL.”
The release of a new DOWN album has always been regarded as more of an event in the world of metal, as opposed to just another new release, and the band’s latest, Over the Under, is no exception. Deep in the grief of five years of personal tragedy and frustration, the NOLA crew somehow managed to triumph over these obstacles, bringing forth the band’s most complete, mature offering to date. Although Over the Under isn’t as immediate as the band’s debut, the album packs plenty of punch with “Three Suns and One Star,” “Pillamyd,” and “N.O.D.” leading the charge, in the metal department. “Never Try,” “Beneath the Tides,” and “In the Thrall of it All” on the other hand counter with some of the band’s most bluesy material yet, with Phil Anselmo effectively delivering some of the most soulful singing of his career. The guitar tandem of Pepper Keenan and the criminally underrated Kirk Weinstein have come into their own, balancing Southern rock and blues with layers of thick Louisiana sludge with the second nature of veterans who have done it all. The rhythm section of Rex Brown and Jimmy Bower is another hidden weapon as the duo grooves like no tomorrow, anchoring the band under the surface with minimal flash but with ample feeling. It’s this collective chemistry that separates DOWN and Over the Under from the rest of the thrown together assembly-line, cookie-cutter drivel that labels and bands seem to content to disperse these days. Over the Under is a strong album from a reinvigorated band that flows powerfully from beginning to end, delivering this year’s most inspiring and deserving comeback. (Down Records/ILG/WMG)
Candlelight Records has confirmed January 23, 2007 as the North American release date for CROWBAR‘s Live: With Full Force. Filmed at the popular German open air festival of the same name, Live: With Full Force was captured on CROWBAR‘s world tour supporting their 2005 release, Lifesblood for the Downtrodden. The live performance DVD also includes candid backstage footage plus the band’s second (and previously unavailable) promotional video for Lifesblood for the Downtrodden album track “Slave No More.”
It goes without saying the scope of contributions and merits CROWBAR have had on the heavy music scene since their formation over a decade ago. Originally noted as a cross-mix of PANTERA and THE MELVINS, later dubbed “sludge metal/core,” CROWBAR pioneered the genre’s early sound and today continue to push its boundaries with experimentation and endless determination. To date their US soundscan history approaching a quarter of a million units.
Track listing for Live: With Full Force is as follows: “Self-Inflicted,” “I Am Forever,” “The Lasting Dose,” “Burn Your World,” “New Dawn,” “High Rate Extinction,” “Planets Collide,” “All I Had (I Gave),” “Slave No More (video)”
CROWBAR are planning a series of dates in 2007 while continuing work on new material for their next album expected early 2008.
