As another great year for heavy music comes to a close, APESHIT takes a look back at our favorite pieces of music of 2012. This year had some great comebacks in CRYPTOPSY and STRIFE. There were also some nice surprises in the new sheer quality of the new SIX FEET UNDER and brutality of the new SOULFLY.
We want to thank all our readers, friends in the industry, and all the amazing artists, big and small, that we get a chance to work with for a great 10th year of existence. As the music industry as a whole continues to take an economic hit, let us all remember: If you like a band or one of their releases, support it!
New York death metal veterans DEHUMANIZED recently inked a multi-album contract with U.S. record label Comatose Music. The history of DEHUMANIZED dates back to the mid-90s, an era that saw the rise of several legendary New York death metal acts, not the least of which included SUFFOCATION, INTERNAL BLEEDING, and PYREXIA.
In 1998 DEHUMANIZED released their debut album Prophecies Foretold. The album was a savage crash course into the classic style of New York slam death metal. As a result of this impressive release they are now considered by many as one of the bands who helped define and shape the undeniable sound and feel of New York death metal.
Sadly in 2000 DEHUMANIZED broke up. They reformed in 2004 only to break up once again in 2007. Finally in 2011 DEHUMANIZED resurfaced with a solid line up and new music. In addition, they are performing live again, which has included several large fests.
Controlled Elite will be the title of the new album scheduled for world wide release on November 27th, 2012.
“All of us in DEHUMANIZED are extremely excited to be a part of Comatose Music and 2013 is going to be the year to remember for all fans of DEHUMANIZED,” says George Torres, drummer and founding member. “We want to spread this new album like the plague!”
Controlled Elite picks up right where Prophecies Foretold left off over 14 years ago with bludgeoning blast beats and plenty of old school NYC style grooves with colossal audio production. It was recorded at Full Force Studio in Long Island, NY and engineered by Joe Cincotta.
Maryland based veterans DYING FETUS were heavily influenced by the underground death metal scene in the early 1990’s, so it’s quite fitting that the band pays homage to their influences on History Repeats…
FETUS has covered ground from the most popular bands in death metal, such as with CANNIBAL CORPSE’s “Born in a Casket” or NAPALM DEATH’s “Unchallenged Hate,” but they don’t forget about the underrated bands, either.
Their cover of BOLT THROWER’s “Unleashed Upon Mankind” might even sound better than the original, and the PESTILENCE cover of “Twisted Truth” is up to par as well. Some bands deserved more credit than they received, such as BROKEN HOPE, and FETUS’ rendition of “Gorehog” is brutal and sounds extremely close to the original. The band also covers an obscure but heavily underrated slam/groove/death metal band from New York, called DEHUMANIZED, and they nail “Fade Into Obscurity” to a T. Throw in “Rohypnol,” an original DYING FETUS track exclusive to this EP, and you’ve got yourself another worthy release from this hard working trio.
While some bands try to experiment or change the original songs too much, things can get a bit blurry, but DYING FETUS sticks to the originals as closely as possible. It’s a treat for old school death metal fans to hear these classic tracks updated in DYING FETUS fashion, and at the same time gives the younger generation a feel for how great these original songs were.
