Brilliant Move: Jack Owen Joins SIX FEET UNDER

Legendary death metal guitarist, Jack Owen, will be rejoining ex-CANNIBAL CORPSE bandmate, Chris Barnes, in SIX FEET UNDER as a second guitarist.  Jack was part of the rebirth of DEICIDE as he joined the band in 2004 following his exit from CANNIBAL.

Chris Barnes comments:

“Hello, hello! First of all, I would like to thank all the fans that pre-ordered and purchased our new album ‘Torment‘, and everyone that is enjoying our new work! Thank you very much! Much appreciated!!
“And now, without further ado, it is with great pleasure that I announce and introduce to you our new second guitarist, Jack Owen.
“As you all know, Jack and I started off together helping form one of the greatest Death Metal bands of all time. Jack and I began talking a few months ago, after his departure from his previous band about joining forces.
“From my side of things, it’s going to be amazing to work with Jack again!! We had some intense adventures, to say the least hahaha…and it’s gonna be killer to step on stage with Jack for the first time in over 22 years!!
“Jack will be joining SFU for the entire cycle of touring for the new album and beyond!
“As you can imagine Six Feet Under is planning a very exciting live set list for you all to freak out over!!!
“More info and tour dates coming soon!
“Hang on to your skeleton!!
Barnes

Jack Owen adds: “I’m super excited to work with my metal brother Chris Barnes and the mighty Six Feet Under! We’ve been talking about writing original material for years, and I hope it gets to that point. It would be amazing. For now, I’m looking forward to touring our asses off. I miss Europe, Canada, South America – hell, I just miss touring! It will be an honor jamming with Chris and his current SFU lineup of talented musicians…and performing with Chris will be like reliving our youth. I can’t wait to see all the SFU and old school Cannibal Corpse fans across the globe!”

AMON – Liar in Wait

Amon - Liar in WaitIt’s been a very long time since the metal world heard from the Hoffman brothers following their departure from DEICIDE.  Using the pre-DEICIDE band name of AMON, they are back with a new style of death metal.  AMON is now more technical than the first four DEICIDE albums ever were.

Brian and Eric Hoffman go for a technical death metal sound that varies between off-time dissonance, melodies, more technical solos, and straight forward brutality.  It is cool to hear new sides of their playing after all these years.  Who knew they could solo like this?

However, there is so much shit packed into each song that the cohesion or flow is often broken or thrown out the window at seemingly random times.  There are plenty of good sounds throughout Liar in Wait though. And there’s no denying the KRISIUN-like approach to pacing and intensity. Don’t expect any breakdowns or any breathing time.

The production leaves something to be desired as it sounds like high quality demo recording rather than a record from two guitarists who helped to pioneer the death metal genre.  You will be hard pressed to find a more frequently used crash symbol in metal than on Liar in Wait.

It’s going to take many spins to remember much of what AMON has recorded due to the combination of riff overkill and more or less “standard” death metal stylings.

Overall, Liar in Wait is raw and rough in obvious places.  But the bottom line is that two guys that played on some of the most groundbreaking albums in metal should do better.  (Amon Records)

APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2013

carcass.surgicalsteelOnce again, another fruitful year in extreme music draws to a close.  We saw some long awaited comebacks by legends, three quarters of the original SABBATH line up, VOIVOD and CARCASS.  The godfathers of U.S. death metal had a healthy year with strong releases by SUFFOCATION, DEICIDE, and IMMOLATION.  We also saw young superstars, GHOST B.C. and KVELERTAK, release good sophomore albums.  Perhaps the most polarizing and criticized album is SATYRICON‘s self-titled album, which was roasted by the majority of the media and fans.

Among the mountains of releases, there is one album that we’ll gush about again and again, and that’s CARCASS‘ comeback album, Surgical Steel.  There are always good and interesting albums coming out all the time, and then there are the untouchable albums that only the legendary bands could create.  Surgical Steel scorches everything in its path and clearly shows that in the pantheon of active bands, they are at the top.

DEICIDE – In the Minds of Evil

Deicide - In the Minds of EvilAfter helping to pioneer death metal, DEICIDE show on In the Minds of Evil that there is plenty left in the tank.  It may come as a surprise to some but the album is pretty damn strong.

Stylistically, the band continue the direction that they have been pursuing since The Stench of Redemption.  Thus, the action is straight forward and easily digestible with lots of lead guitar work.  However, there are some nods to classic DEICIDE and a noticeable CANNIBAL CORPSE-era Jack Owen touch.

The band sound very cohesive as everyone contributes equally with excellent performances.  Vocalist/bassist Glen Benton‘s vocals are powerful and strong and nearly every vocal line is catchy to varying degrees.  The riffing is very beefy and always busy.  Kevin Quirion is a fine lead guitarist and he puts nice accents on the songs and his well rounded solos are as good as well touted players like James Murphy.

Overall, In the Minds of Evil doesn’t let up quality with only a few places getting monotonous.  While it doesn’t rank among their classic first three albums, you’d be hard pressed not to be able to enjoy such a solid and catchy album.  (Century Media Records)

DEICIDE, BROKEN HOPE, DISGORGE, NECRONOMICON @ The Whisky, Hollywood, CA (10/20/13)

The No Salvation Tour had made its way to Los Angeles, and by the looks of things outside the world famous Whisky A Go-Go, it would be a packed house inside.  There were tons of fans lined up outside the venue, but since the show was sold out, they had no choice but to stand outside and hang out all night!

The opening act for this brutal tour package was NECRONOMICON, but alas, they did not play, as their RV broke down and sadly, did not get to the venue in time to perform.  The crowd grew restless, and wanted some brutality…

After a few miscues with their intro, San Diego’s DISGORGE proved why they are still one of the most extreme and violent acts out there.  The band plowed directly into “Atonement” with new vocalist Angel Ochoa up to par with legendary ex-DISGORGE vocalist Matti Way.  The crowd started up the pit, and the band fed off the swirling hair and circle pit nicely, delivering the most ferocious, extreme, and ultra low guttural death metal possible.  They went through their “hits” such as “Womb Full of Scabs,” “She Lay Gutted,” and “Cranial Impalement” just to name a few.  The crowd gave them an excellent response, and this tour should definitely take the band to the next level in terms of gaining more fan base and support.

Title Track from New DEICIDE Album is Up

The title track for the new DEICIDE album, In the Minds of Evil, is now online and sounds pretty cool.  Listen for the quote from movie, The Dark Knight, at the beginning.

In the Minds of Evil will be released November 25 in North America on Century Media Records. The album is the band’s eleventh studio effort. Says DEICIDE frontman Glen Benton of the new release: “Do you hear that? It’s the sound of Satan singing along to the new DEICIDE! In a world gone mad… ‘IN THE MINDS OF EVIL‘!”

Now, if they can pull off an album as good as Surgical Steel, then they’ll be all set.

APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2011

2011 was a very productive and enjoyable year for extreme music, perhaps the best in years. Thus, it was not an easy task choosing what we enjoyed best since they were just so many. 2011 also gave us unforgettably bad albums by LOU REED and METALLICA, flops by THE HAUNTED as well as controversial ones by MORBID ANGEL.

We look forward to another strong year in 2012 in which we will celebrate our 10 years online. Cheers for all of your support in 2011! Radikult!!

Deicide – To Hell with God

DEICIDE have paid their dues long ago and have become so (in)famous that their fans will buy anything – even if it’s a subpar release, such as the horrendous Insineratehymn and In Torment in Hell albums. While the band made a huge comeback with The Stench of Redemption, they used up their good riffs on that release and promptly released the weak Till Death Do Us Part album soon thereafter.

Fortunately, To Hell With God is a beast of an album, with tasty riffs that haven’t been seen since the Serpents of the Light disc. The title track surprisingly kicks everything off, and while Glen Benton’s typical barking vocals are still the weakest link, the drums are processed and tight, with guitar riffs that are thick and intense. This type of energy was revamped with The Stench of Redemption but now kicked into high gear with songs like “Save Your” and “Conviction.”

With furious blast beats and double bass in tow, speed and intensity are emphasized heavily throughout the album, and To Hell With God definitely proves naysayers and detractors wrong. Drummer Steve Asheim is the main songwriter now, and he shows that the Hoffman brothers aren’t missed at all. Asheim and Jack Owen have taken it upon themselves to write some old school riffs that DEICIDE fans have missed for so long.

Since the addition of guitarist Ralph Santolla, DEICIDE has incorporated some amazing solos, opposed to the haphazard uninspired SLAYER whammy bar style that the Hoffman brothers favored so much. “Angels of Hell” shows off exactly how Santolla likes to shred, and his style fits DEICIDE much better than it does with OBITUARY. Benton has started a new habit of writing hilarious and long song titles, such as “Hang in Agony Until You’re Dead,” but fortunately, the music is fast, furious, catchy, and diabolical.

With flashbacks of “When Satan Rules His World,” “Into the Darkness You Go” has a similar feel and pushes the intensity to the max. The closer, “How Can You Call Yourself a God” contains one of the most hilarious chorus lines ever written, but you’ll soon find yourself happily singing along to this line.

As always, DEICIDE albums purposely end around 30 minutes so that the listener can press play again. The lyrical content and song titles are unintentionally hilarious, but it’s the music that counts, and To Hell With God is a fantastic album for a band that was thought of already as dead and buried. DEICIDE Signs with Century Media; to Embark on European Tour

Century Media Records has announced the signing of one of death metal’s founding fathers, DEICIDE. Led by original members Glen Benton (vocals, bass) and Steve Asheim (drums), DEICIDE have been busy at Audiohammer Studios with Mark Lewis (BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, CHIMAIRA) and are looking at a summer ’09 release. The group have reunited with legendary guitarists Jack Owen (ex-CANNIBAL CORPSE) and Ralph Santolla (OBITUARY, ex-ICED EARTH, DEATH) and will embark on a two-week European tour this week. Visit http://www.myspace.com/theofficialdeicidemyspacepage to view their complete itinerary.

Benton states: “I want to say it is an honor to be an official CM artist. I look forward to working with the fine folks at CM and providing them with our style of metal. I can ensure you that what surfaces will definitely be nothing less than a total bash-your-face-in-from-start-to-finish, bastard. HAIL SATAN!!!!”

Asheim further comments: “I’m happy to be a part of the CM family and look forward to working with them. The new DEICIDE material in the works should be a good way to kick off the new deal. It’s a totally sick new record with a totally sick new label, but the same ol’ sick DEICIDE. See you all in 2009 and hold onto your balls!”

Owen adds: “It is an honor and a pleasure to sign with one of the most established metal labels on the planet. Century Media‘s track record speaks for itself, and we can’t wait to unleash this beast of a new DEICIDE album through the mighty CM! Many thanks to Kevin Astl and Steve Joh for their long hours bringing this deal to full fruition!”
