National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) 2012 Show Report

Every year, NAMM bestows upon us shiny new toys for musicmakers of all genres to make new (and old) sounds with. NAMM 2012 was no less a musical heaven for the products, gadgets, and innovations that help make metal happen. We took a spin through the showroom floor at Anaheim Convention Center to check out some new equipment that our metal cohorts use and abuse. Full report after the jump.

Video of the Day: Lars Ulrich Tries Out for DREAM THEATER

Unless you’re a METALLICA fanboy in 2011 (what’s wrong with you?), it’s a universally accepted truth that Lars Ulrich is one of the worst drummers in metal history. So to have some fun, dmdollinar08 posted this brilliant video chronicling Lars‘ audition for the recent vacancy on the drum stool for prog juggernauts, DREAM THEATER.

Enjoy!

CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED Confirm First Ever Tour

Richard Christy‘s CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED is hitting the road. Tickets are now available on http://www.richardchristy.com and http://www.timripperowens.com.

Richard Christy talked about the tour: “I am Soooooooooooooo pumped to get out on the road and blast some heavy metal with CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED this summer! Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens and I are beyond excited about this tour! The response to our debut album has been so amazing and I think people are going to be blown away when they hear these songs live! I’m sweating my buns off in the rehearsal room every day getting tighter and tighter on our songs so that we will be absolutely blistering when we get out on the road in July! Steve DiGiorgio and Jason Suecof have prior commitments and won’t be able to join us on this tour but we have the incredible musicians John Comprix (BEYOND FEAR, RINGWORM) on guitar, Dennis Hayes (BEYOND FEAR, ex-ICED EARTH) on bass, and Matt Sorg (RINGWORM) on guitar joining CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED for this tour! We’ll be playing our debut album in full and we’ll have plenty more surprises as well! Joining us as host of the tour and also doing stand up at each show will be the hilarious comedian and carrier of the heavy metal torch, Don Jamieson from VH1’s That Metal Show! I’ve known Don for many years and I’m so psyched to have him as part of this tour! Coming soon we’ll have more big announcements about the tour including opening bands in each market and other cool surprises! So get ready to raise your fists and bang your heads with CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED this summer! See you on tour!”

Vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens adds: “Man I really look forward to this short run of shows, just going out with some friends and playing in front of some of the best fans around. And watching Don every night just tops it off!!! See you all on the road!”

DREAM THEATER to Open for IRON MAIDEN this Summer

Prog rock/metal icons DREAM THEATER will spend their summer supporting IRON MAIDEN on the band’s month-long U.S./Canada tour. The tour launches on June 9 and runs through July 20, and includes a stop at the storied Madison Square Garden in NYC, marking the first time in a lengthy and respected career that DREAM THEATER will have played the world’s most famous arena.

Of touring with IRON MAIDEN in North America, drummer Mike Portnoy said, “It is a bit of a dream come true for us. After 25 years together, at this stage in our career, there’s honestly only three bands DREAM THEATER would consider opening for and MAIDEN is one of them. It is an absolute honor. Through the years, we’ve done many one-off shows with MAIDEN and they’ve almost all been overseas. It is very exciting to finally be doing a full tour with them and on our side of the pond, no less. These are gonna be amazing shows that the fans won’t want to miss. Up the f***ing irons!”
