APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2016

VirusAnother strong year is in the books for heavy music, so strong that making a year end list seemed unfair to every release that we did not include in our lists.  The underground continues to thrive with releases from legendary bands such as DARK FUNERAL, VADER, and NEUROSIS that will stand the test of time. Actually, most of the long running bands did not fail to meet or exceed expectations.  Thrash metal pioneers, MEGADETH, VOIVOD, and TESTAMENT, certainly released excellent records.  What is more important is that 2016 saw a lot of great releases from less trendy, more obscure bands.

Trees of EternityThis past year is personally notable as lost a dear friend and contributor, Brandon Stratton AKA rocknro11chef13.  As a small tribute, we’ve included albums that he would’ve likely picked for his year end list.  Life is short, my friends.  Embrace it.

Sixth Chapter from DECAPITATED Arrives September 2014

The sixth album from Polish gods, DECAPITATED, will be entitled Blood Mantra and is set to be released September 26, 2014 via Nuclear Blast and Mystic Production (Poland)

The artwork was created by Polish artist, Lukasz Jaszak Design & Photography, who also made the cover of Carnival is Forever.

Blood Mantra was recorded at Hertz Studio in Bialystok, Poland under the direction of Wojtek and Slawek Wiesawski.

Guitarist & founding member Waclaw “Vogg” Kieltyka states:

“Extreme and groove – I think that’s the best way to describe our new album. This time we feel that we have something totally crushing and huge.

Blood Mantra is the most heavy and mature album we ever did in our carrier. I cannot wait to start to play songs live because riffs are soo deep and powerful.”

GOJIRA’s New Album, L’Enfant Sauvage, Coming Out June 26, 2012

France’s GOJIRA have revealed L’Enfant Sauvage as the title of their Roadrunner Records debut. The title translates to “The Wild Child.” The album, which features 11 tracks, thunderous metal, is scheduled to land at retail on June 26.

“When you become a musician, you don’t have a boss telling you what to do so you have to be very responsible,” singer/guitarist/songwriter Joe Duplantier said, shedding a little light on the title and its meaning. “With freedom comes responsibility, so I’m asking myself, ‘What is freedom? What does it mean to me?’ L’Enfant Sauvage reflects on that. There’s no answer though. There’s just life and questions.”

A special collector’s package of L’Enfant Sauvage will feature two bonus tracks and a double-colored vinyl version of the record, along with an exclusive t-shirt. Pre-orders will launch here shortly.

GOJIRA Sign to Roadrunner Records

Roadrunner Records announced today the addition of French metal behemoths GOJIRA to the label.

“We are so stoked to walk with the legendary Roadrunner,” vocalist/guitarist Joe Duplantier said about the new partnership. “We discovered SEPULTURA, MACHINE HEAD, DEATH, FEAR FACTORY and so many other great bands thanks to these guys. Roadrunner has been a great source of inspiration for us as metal fans. It’s an honor to be part of this family today as a band. We feel we’ll get the right support at the right moment in our career. We cannot wait to release our new record and get back on the road.”

The band’s Roadrunner debut will be its fifth album overall. It was 2005’s From Mars to Sirius and 2008’s The Way of All Flesh which established GOJIRA as a metal force of nature and a key player in the scene. The band will record in New York City, also the label’s headquarters, in November 2011, with a spring 2012 release date being eyed. Joe Duplantier will serve in a co-producer capacity along Josh Wilbur.

GOJIRA have kept busy in between albums. They recently recorded the four-song Sea Shepherd EP, with all proceeds from the EP benefiting the Sea Shepherd charity. Sea Shepherd is a Washington-state based non-profit marine conservation organization which employs direct action tactics to protect sea life. Release details on that EP, which is loaded with guests like MASTODON‘s Brent Hinds, LAMB OF GOD’s Randy Blythe, SOULFLY’s Max Cavalera and Devin Townsend to name a few, are yet to be determined.

GOJIRA – The Way of All Flesh

There may be a trillion metal albums being released each month on a trillion labels and the metal media machine at large would have you believe that they are all worthy. Truthfully, few newer bands are doing anything noteworthy. Thankfully, we are blessed with the greatness of GOJIRA to make us forget about the soulless and utterly unnecessary 99% of metal. Building upon their excellent album, From Mars to Sirius, The Way of All Flesh takes things to higher marks of quality. The twelve tracks provide more than enough content to satiate any listener with GOJIRA‘s unique brand of extreme metal. The album is loaded with tasty riffing, fierceness, top-notch performances (especially drummer Mario Duplantier), and a confidence that is undeniable. One of the band’s best characteristics is their mastery of understanding and creating music with dynamics. Whether it be tempo changes, tone changes, or different riffing styles, the songs never grow stale nor do things ever seem redundant. There is also an interesting amount of experimentation with different sounds outside the conventional metal confines such as the tribal drums on “The Art of Dying” or the synthesizers on “A Sight to Behold.” GOJIRA embody all the things that make metal great. It’s fierce, confident, well played, dynamic, creative, and just plain solid. The Way of All Flesh is a mandatory listen. (Prosthetic Records)

APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2008

We finally got off our asses and did it.  It’s already the year 2009, but we’ve complied a list of our top albums of 2008.  Compiling such a list is never easy, and 2008 was no exception.  Maybe it was a lack of albums that really stood out, or maybe we just weren’t paying enough attention.  Regardless, we took a quick look back on the metal albums we felt were notable in 2008.

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY: Blood Infliction

Since Max Cavalera‘s departure from SEPULTURA in 1996, the metal world has wished for none other than a SEPULTURA reunion. While that dream still remains, the recent reunion between brothers Iggor and Max has proven to be more special and meaningful. Their new project CAVALERA CONSPIRACY marks the first time the Cavalera brothers have recorded together in more than a decade. The result? A blistering infliction of thrash, punk, and metal that seethes with excitement and enthusiasm. Just before the album’s release, frontman Max took some time to express his delight to APESHIT about the reunion with his brother and the subsequent spontaneous musical output.
