HIGH ON FIRE: Southern Lord Recordings to Reissue The Art of Self Defense

Southern Lord Recordings is pleased to announce the reissue of The Art of Self Defense, the classic first recording from Oakland power trio HIGH ON FIRE. Set for release on July 31, the landmark long player has been completely remastered and enhanced by Brad Boatright and includes the addition of the band’s first ever demo, two bonus 7” tracks as well as a 48-page booklet.

The Art of Self Defense was initially released in 2000 by Man’s Ruin Records. Featuring the collective energies of guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike, drummer Des Kensel, and bassist George Rice with producer Billy Anderson, the record billows at the seams with Pike’s instantly recognizable guitar tone, first unleashed during his days with stoner metal behemoths SLEEP.

CONVERGE: A Conversation with CONVERGE

In 2009, Boston’s CONVERGE unleashed, Axe to Fall, an album equalling, if not topping, their acclaimed Jane Doe album, managing to titillate those with even the highest of expectations. Staying true to their style, the band bare their souls in a most caustic mix of hardcore and metal that resonates with sheer heart and honesty.

CONVERGE recently whipped through North America on an unusually larger (sponsored) tour with DETHKLOK, MASTODON, and HIGH ON FIRE. This was a unique opportunity for the band to showcase their powerful and unceremoniously raw live performance to a younger and more diverse audience.

APESHIT caught up with vocalist Jake Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou during their Los Angeles stop to chat about the tour, the new album, and what makes CONVERGE, CONVERGE.

INTRONAUT Signs Worldwide Deal with Century Media Records

Very few bands can effectively mix intelligence with intensity like Southern California’s INTRONAUT, which is one of the biggest reasons Century Media Records quickly signed the quartet to a worldwide deal. INTRONAUT essentially walks a fine line between psychedelic brutality, captivating hooks and devastating yet unpredictable time changes. This is the essence of thinking man’s metal and something so refreshing that it should serve as a vicious wake up call to masses forcing the entire genre to take notice.

A short tour of the U.S. with HIGH ON FIRE, A LIFE ONCE LOST, and SAVIOURS is slated for February, which will lead them into finishing the writing process for the new full-length to be recorded in April.

Sacha Dunable (vocals/guitars) states: “There is a level of chemistry that we’ve never had before, now with our new guitar player Dave in the band. The new ideas that are flowing out of us are totally destroying everything we’ve done prior to this, and we can’t wait to hear what will come of it.”

INTRONAUT Headlining dates:
1/20 Los Angeles, CA – Relax Bar w/BOOK OF BLACK EARTH, THE FUNERAL PYRE
2/8 Mesa, AZ – Hollywood Alley w/ ZOROASTER, SOURVEIN, LANDMINE MARATHON

2/11 Tulsa, OK – The Monolith w/DESTROYER DESTROYER
2/12 Memphis, TN – Black Lodge Microdrome
