Former IRON MAIDEN Drummer Clive Burr Passes Away

Former IRON MAIDEN drummer Clive Burr has passed away today after a long struggle with Multiple Sclerosis.  The band issued the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened to report that Clive Burr passed away last night. He had suffered poor health for many years after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and died peacefully in his sleep at home.

Steve Harris said ‘This is terribly sad news. Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to MAIDEN in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time.”

Bruce Dickinson adds ‘I first met Clive when he was leaving SAMSON and joining IRON MAIDEN. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family.’

“As MAIDEN fans all know, Clive joined MAIDEN in 1979 and performed on the first three albums Iron Maiden (1980), Killers (1981) and The Number Of The Beast (1982).  Prior to that he was a member of SAMSON, the band Bruce fronted before he too joined MAIDEN.”

IRON MAIDEN @ Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre, Irvine, CA (8/9/12)

In metal, there are so many great live bands but few deliver the kind of religious experience that IRON MAIDEN regularly delivers. The Maiden England World Tour hit Southern California last night with the band reprising the 1988 Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tour, complete with the stage set up and setlist modeled after that tour.

The enthusiasm, anticipation, and sheer positive energy at Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre was just so special. And when the band finally took the stage with “Moonchild,” the place exploded. The roar of the crowd was deafening. MAIDEN didn’t waste much time in between songs as they kept going into song after song. “The Evil that Men Do” and “The Prisoner” followed quickly afterwards. For MAIDEN purists, the removal of “Still Life” and “Infinite Dreams” may have been a disappointment. However, the band replaced these songs with the underrated “Afraid to Shoot Strangers” and the favorite “Fear of the Dark.” Also, it should be noted that the setlist is mostly based on the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tour rather than being a facsimile.

IRON MAIDEN Adds Second L.A.-Area Show By Overwhelming Demand

After the tremendous response from fans to the news that IRON MAIDEN will bring their highly-anticipated Maiden England World Tour to the Southland this summer, the band has announced a second Los Angeles-area show. They will be available at LiveNation.com, Ticketmaster.com, as well as at select Live Nation and Ticketmaster retail outlets, plus via Charge-By-Phone (800.745.3000). Following the massively successful Final Frontier World Tour 2010-11, IRON MAIDEN are back on the road this summer with a series of arena, amphitheatre and festival shows in the U.S.A. and Canada, opening in Charlotte, NC, U.S.A. on June 21, and finishing in Houston, TX, on Aug 18 to be followed by further dates around the World in 2013. The Maiden England World Tour will closely mirror, in terms of production and content, the original 1988 concert video of the same name, shot on the Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Tour.

Maiden England
marks the third chapter in the History of IRON MAIDEN, a journey which began in 2004 with The Early Days DVD and subsequent 2005 Early Days Tour. Part Two followed in 2008 with the Live After Death DVD – the seminal 1984 concert recorded at Long Beach Arena (L.A) during the World Slavery Tour – and the band embarking on their ground-breaking Somewhere Back in Time World Tour 2008/9, which saw them play to over two million fans in almost 40 countries.

Comments vocalist Bruce Dickinson, “We have great fun playing the History of MAIDEN Tours because it gives us an opportunity between new albums to go out and play songs from our earlier catalogue. It’s always fantastic seeing the crowd reaction from a new generation of fans who have never experienced some of these tracks performed live before, and of course we know our longstanding fans will enjoy seeing the original Seventh Son Tour re-visited – with many other surprises! Our intention is to play about two thirds of the original track list of Maiden England, including some songs we have not played live in a very, very long time, plus other favourites we just know the fans are going to want to hear! We always try to give our fans a great show musically, but we have always tried to make it as entertaining and memorable an experience as we can visually. And we all feel this show is going to do that splendidly! We can’t wait to get started in Charlotte”.

National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) 2012 Show Report

Every year, NAMM bestows upon us shiny new toys for musicmakers of all genres to make new (and old) sounds with. NAMM 2012 was no less a musical heaven for the products, gadgets, and innovations that help make metal happen. We took a spin through the showroom floor at Anaheim Convention Center to check out some new equipment that our metal cohorts use and abuse. Full report after the jump.

Check out the truly tear jerking video:

Cash for Kids was established to raise funds for sick and underprivileged children across Birmingham and the West Midlands to help local kids in crisis.

IRON MAIDEN Announce Release Date, Artwork and Tracklisting for New Album The Final Frontier

The Final FrontierThe release date for IRON MAIDEN’s new studio album The Final Frontier is now confirmed for Monday 16th August. The new album features artwork illustrated by Melvyn Grant and, to mark the occasion, the band have made special arrangements for one new album track “El Dorado” to be made available worldwide as a free digital download MP3 with immediate effect. Click here for your free download (US fans, please go here).

Singer Bruce Dickinson explains, “’El Dorado‘ is a preview of the forthcoming studio album. As we will be including it in the set of our Final Frontier World Tour (which opens in Dallas On 9th June – full dates below) we thought it would be great to thank all our fans and get them into The Final Frontier mood by giving them this song up front of the tour and album release.”

The band reunited with long-time MAIDEN producer Kevin “Caveman” Shirley in early 2010 at Compass Point Studios, Nassau to record the album and then moved to LA to finish the recording and do the mixing. Compass Point Studio is very familiar to the band, it was where they recorded the Piece of Mind (’83), Powerslave (’84) and Somewhere in Time (’86) albums.

Bruce comments, “The studio had the same vibe and it was EXACTLY as it had been in 1983, NOTHING had changed! Even down to the broken shutter in the corner…same carpet….everything… It was really quite spooky. But we felt very relaxed in such a familiar and well-trodden environment and I think this shows in the playing and the atmosphere of the album.”

Thirty years on from their eponymous debut album in April 1980, The Final Frontier will be MAIDEN’s 15th studio album, making a remarkable average of a new album every two years for 30 years and totaling over 80 million album sales during this period.

The full tracklisting for the album (total running time 76:35) is:

1. “Satellite 15….The Final Frontier” (8:40)
2. “El Dorado” (6:49)
3. “Mother Of Mercy” (5:20)
4. “Coming Home” (5:52)
5. “The Alchemist” (4:29)
6. “Isle Of Avalon” (9:06)
7. “Starblind” (7:48)
8. “The Talisman” (9:03)
9. “The Man Who Would Be King” (8:28)
10. “When The Wild Wind Blows” (10:59)

The Final Frontier World Tour begins in Dallas on June 9th with 25 shows in major cities across the USA and Canada, playing to an expected 350,000 fans or more. Following this the tour will ship over to Europe starting in Dublin on July 30 and playing a few selected major festivals and stadiums, finishing in Valencia, Spain, on Aug 21 and including a concert in Transylvania.

Says bass player and founder member Steve Harris, “We’re hugely excited about this tour. I think the fans will really like the brand new stage production and lights and we will also be debuting one of the new album tracks, ‘El Dorado.’ Our Texan fans will be the very first people anywhere to hear it live, so it will be interesting to see their reaction and how it goes down with the crowd on the night! Eddie has changed a bit for this tour but is possibly the most outrageous one to date… I can’t say too much about him as don’t want to spoil the surprise but I guarantee he will scare the hell out of you!”

DREAM THEATER to Open for IRON MAIDEN this Summer

Prog rock/metal icons DREAM THEATER will spend their summer supporting IRON MAIDEN on the band’s month-long U.S./Canada tour. The tour launches on June 9 and runs through July 20, and includes a stop at the storied Madison Square Garden in NYC, marking the first time in a lengthy and respected career that DREAM THEATER will have played the world’s most famous arena.

Of touring with IRON MAIDEN in North America, drummer Mike Portnoy said, “It is a bit of a dream come true for us. After 25 years together, at this stage in our career, there’s honestly only three bands DREAM THEATER would consider opening for and MAIDEN is one of them. It is an absolute honor. Through the years, we’ve done many one-off shows with MAIDEN and they’ve almost all been overseas. It is very exciting to finally be doing a full tour with them and on our side of the pond, no less. These are gonna be amazing shows that the fans won’t want to miss. Up the f***ing irons!”

IRON MAIDEN – Live After Death

After the release of a monster of a DVD, The History of IRON MAIDEN – Part 1: The Early Days, fans have had to wait an agonizing three years for the follow up, Live After Death. The great news is that Live After Death does not disappoint in the least. Disc One is composed of the long out of print Live After Death concert video. Recorded on the Powerslave tour during the band’s four night run at Long Beach Arena, this is absolutely the most, if not one of the most, classic metal concert videos of all time. IRON MAIDEN are in top form and go through a complete setlist of MAIDEN classics. The Powerslave-themed stage set is larger than life and really adds to the spectacle of the show. Disc Two consists of part 2 of the “History of IRON MAIDEN” documentary, an additional documentary in “Behind the Iron Curtain,” the band’s performance at Rock in Rio ’85 and more. Part 2 of the “History of IRON MAIDEN” takes us through the mega successful Powerslave-era of the band beginning with the recording of the album. The band members, crew, management, and friends all share candid thoughts and anecdotes from the era. The abundance of footage, photographs, and interviews really conveys a great sense about what MAIDEN were living at the time. “Behind the Iron Curtain” takes you through the band’s unprecedented tour of Poland and other areas of the Eastern Block during the communist era. The content of both documentaries is not only fascinating, interesting, and highly entertaining, but just as awe-inspiring when you see the unmatched adoration and success that MAIDEN achieved over 23 years ago. The excellent quality and abundance of interesting content should more than satisfy (rabid) MAIDEN fans. The unquestionable relevance and impact of Powerslave and this subsequent DVD package make for the perfect compliments. The bottom line is that Live After Death is a mandatory purchase for every metal fan. Onward to next MAIDEN DVD! (New Door Records/Universal Music Enterprises)
