CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED – Charred Walls of the Damned

When Richard Christy finds time away from The Howard Stern Show, Jason Suecof takes a break from his producing jobs, and Tim “Ripper” Owens and Steve DiGiorgio are pried away from playing in their multitude of bands, they pull off a brilliant project like CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED.

Ghost Town” immediately brings back memories of DEATH’s The Sound Of Perseverance as Richard Christy executes a timely drum intro, and starts to blast away with his unique drumming style. Fretless bass master Steve DiGiorgio‘s bass lines immediately draw your attention, and when Ripper‘s first notes hit, the listener knows that this is nice slab of classic heavy metal melted together with great musicianship. So many bands these days forget how to write “songs,” but this all-star group writes a few excellent and memorable tracks, as “From The Abyss” showcases the heavy metal sound with catchy riffs and solos that even extreme metal enthusiasts can enjoy. The entire album is a throwback album paying tribute to traditional heavy metal and reminding youngsters how to write metal songs with catchy hooks, choruses, excellent leads, and superb drumming without resorting to overused blast beats, generic vocals and mindless solos. Christy can out drum any of the so-called “technical” death metal drummers, but he chooses to be clean, basic, and solid, while adding his own technical flair, much like his days with DEATH and ICED EARTH.

Blood On Wood,” as with a large chunk of the album, has a lot of NWOBHM and JUDAS PRIEST influence. And while the songs are on the short side, the length works out well as the tracks range mostly in the 3-4 minute mark. A track like “Manifestations” is one of those heavy metal tracks you can sing along to without feeling cheesy and just have fun belting out a long Ripper scream. “The Darkest Eyes,” the pinnacle of the album, showcases Christy‘s perfect and synchronized drumming, with Suecof‘s melodic solos and breakdowns which compliment Ripper‘s sing-a-long chorus and screams amazingly well.

CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED is finally a “supergroup” that lives up to its name and isn’t just a quick cash grab, like EX-DEO or OV HELL. This project can be comparable to a more traditional heavy metal version of CONTROL DENIED, but CHARRED WALLS definitely holds its own. Fans of any of these amazing musicians should dig this release, as would any heavy metal or metal fan in general. Do not overlook this band just because of the horrible name or cover art, because this album may very well be the surprise album of the year. (Metal Blade Records)

WHITECHAPEL to Commence Recording of New Album

Tennessee’s WHITECHAPEL are set to enter Audiohammer Studios in Orlando, Florida to begin recording the follow-up to 2008′s This is Exile album. The band will be teaming up with producer Jason Suecof, who has done production for TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, CHIMAIRA, DEVILDRIVER, and many more.

Guitarist and founding member Alex Wade comments: “We’re really excited to announce that we will be hitting the studio in January with a producer who needs no introduction, Jason Suecof. Suecof has produced some of the most brutal metal albums to date and we are excited for him to get his hands on our new material to make it the heaviest music we’ve created thus far.

“Also, Dusty Peterson has been signed on to handle the artwork duties. His dark, yet meticulously detailed style of hand drawn artwork is sure to bring out a truly vivid and brutal masterpiece. We really wanted our artwork for the record to speak as loudly for us as the music we are creating, thus, Dusty was picked for his unbelievably realistic and detailed hand drawn style. In this day and age where downloading a CD is as easy as typing the cd’s name into a search bar, we wanted to make the artwork something creative and special for the fans who actually purchase the CD. Almost like owning a piece of art.

“As for the title and track listing, you’ll just have to wait for that as the CD comes closer to completion.”

Richard Christy’s CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED Signs with Metal Blade

Drummer Richard Christy‘s new band, CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED, have announced they’ve signed with Metal Blade Records. CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED‘s roster is stacked with some of metal’s most talented musicians–famed producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) on guitars, Tim “Ripper” Owens (BEYOND FEAR, ex-ICED EARTH, ex-JUDAS PRIEST) on vocals, Steve Digiorgio (SADUS, TESTAMENT, CONTROL DENIED) on bass, and Christy on drums.

Christy, the former ICED EARTH/DEATH/CONTROL DENIED drummer comments: “To be a part of the Metal Blade family is such an honor. I’ve been a fan of the label since I was an eleven year old kid ordering Metal Massacre cassettes through the mail. It’s so amazing to be label mates with some of my all time favorite metal bands like AMON AMARTH, KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE, CANNIBAL CORPSE, and LIZZY BORDEN, just to name a few! Brian Slagel is a true metal legend and I’m honored to be a part of his label. I’m beyond excited to get back into the studio and make some crushing Heavy Metal with my friends!”

Metal Blade Records founder Brian Slagel adds: “We are very happy to welcome Richard Christy and his band CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED to the Metal Blade Family. In addition to his duties on the Howard Stern show, Richard has had a great career in metal. He has put together a really great new band with some of metal’s most talented artists and we can’t wait to have everyone hear it.”

CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED‘s full-length debut is expected to drop this fall, produced by Jason Suecof himself at his Orlando, FL based studio, Audiohammer Studios. More details, a myspace page, and music will be coming soon.
