With the whirlwind of publicity that U.S. presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has been receiving, Jello Biafra (JELLO BIAFRA AND THE GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE) shares additional thoughts on Mr. Trump on his latest edition of What Would Jello Do?
Jello reveals some new examples of ridiculousness and racism that may not necessary be widespread public knowledge. And speaking of racism, here is an image that sums up how BRUJERIA feel about the presidential candidate.
Biafra explains: “Better late than never, here’s our tribute inspired by the Occupy movement. Not just ‘occupy’ – SHOCK-YOU-PY! – since my favorite kind of resistance can have theater, pranks and other creative sabotage – non-violent, of course!”
The SHOCK-U-PY! EP (virus 446 – vinyl, CD EP and digital) hits in early fall, followed by the long-awaited new JB/GSM full-length, White People and the Damage Done (virus 450 – vinyl, CD and digital.) “Vinyl and CDs will take a few weeks so we’re posting “SHOCK-U-PY!” online now – in two forms. “There’s the “sing-a-long mix” from the EP- semi-acoustic and ready made (for the most part) for singing at street protests. Or if you want the usual “rip your head off” approach, there’s the “rock-a-long mix” with the guitars way louder. So, hey – now you have freedom of choice: two mixes, pay or don’t pay, you decide. Please help us out if you can. I’m way in debt trying to finish the album. Benefit compilations for Occupy can just take it, it’s right there!”
The SHOCK-U-PY! EP will also include the non-album song “Barackstar O’Bummer” plus a remix of “We Occupy” another song for the uprising Jello guested on with D.O.A. “We both go way back in the direct action side of things so I’m honored Joe asked me to sing on this.”
Musician/political activist/spoken word artist Jello Biafra has recently posted a video in which he discusses some of the latest hot topics in the U.S., including U.S. president Barack Obama‘s speech regarding the shooting in Tuscon, Arizona earlier this month, U.S. gun laws, Sarah Palin and more. While you don’t have to agree with everything Jello says, he does present a different viewpoint/angle to current events as compared to the mainstream media.
It’s that time where we take a look back on the year as 2009 comes to a close. So we, the APESHIT goons, asked ourselves, what albums moved us, kicked our asses, and reminded us of why we love metal (and music)? Read on for our top albums of 2009… Continue reading →
Question: When is a new Jello Biafra collaboration album anything but excellent?
One would think that there would be a lot more albums addressing the social, political, and economics of America during this era we’re living in. However, leave it Jello Biafra to take the lead with THE GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE to make their statement about where America is at and where it’s heading. The band’s sound is not too far off to the DEAD KENNEDYS in terms of its direct approach, excellent assortment of riffs, and anti-establishment attitude. However, that’s where the similarities end. JELLO BIAFRA AND THE GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE dish out some of the heaviest riffs that Jello has ever written. The musicianship is top notch as well.
Despite the artwork being handled by artist Shepard Fairy coupled with the possible connotations of the album title, The Audacity of Hype is not necessarily an album directly towards or about Barack Obama. The album covers a wide array of issues including California’s Three Strikes law, the culture of consumerism, political mudslinging, and the negative effects of globalization.
The Audacity of Hype definitely gets better with successive listens and one gains a better appreciation for all that was involved in the making of it. Album closer, “I Won’t Give Up,” is a fitting and inspirational way to sum up the attitude of the band. When you’re ready for something other than prepackaged, easily digestible rebellion, JELLO BIAFRA AND THE GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE have the album you’re looking for. (Alternative Tentacles)
The Alternative Tentacles 30th Anniversary Incest-A-Thon features three shows running over the range of available talent at our disposal, which is mighty. Though less than a handful of labels in the punk genre have stuck it out longer, we are proud nonetheless to make it battered and bruised through the past three decades. Begun in 1979 to release DEAD KENNEDYS‘ “California Uber Alles” single, the San Francisco institution continues to release new music as well as occasional punk reissues and a breadth of styles beyond punk. The strand holding it all together is the tastes and whims of label owner Jello Biafra. Appropriately, this Incest-A-Thon doubles as a three night residency for headliners JELLO BIAFRA AND GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, whose debut album The Audacity of Hype comes out October 20th.
