APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2016

VirusAnother strong year is in the books for heavy music, so strong that making a year end list seemed unfair to every release that we did not include in our lists.  The underground continues to thrive with releases from legendary bands such as DARK FUNERAL, VADER, and NEUROSIS that will stand the test of time. Actually, most of the long running bands did not fail to meet or exceed expectations.  Thrash metal pioneers, MEGADETH, VOIVOD, and TESTAMENT, certainly released excellent records.  What is more important is that 2016 saw a lot of great releases from less trendy, more obscure bands.

Trees of EternityThis past year is personally notable as lost a dear friend and contributor, Brandon Stratton AKA rocknro11chef13.  As a small tribute, we’ve included albums that he would’ve likely picked for his year end list.  Life is short, my friends.  Embrace it.

MADE OUT OF BABIES’s New Album, The Ruiner, Set for June 24th Release

The End Records have set a release date of June 24th, 2008 for the North American release of The Ruiner from Brooklyn-based band MADE OUT OF BABIES.

The band’s third album is their most inspired and complex offering to date. While The Ruiner retains the group’s trademark ferocious hybrid of PJ HARVEY, JESUS LIZARD, YEAH YEAH YEAHS and BIG BLACK, it also finds the band’s musical exploration showcasing something unsettling and unique.

Using photos from exhibits on the evolution of mankind at The Museum of Natural History in New York City, the album artwork was designed by critically-acclaimed artist Seldon Hunt. To view the artwork, go here: http://www.theendrecords.com/media/moob_theruiner_album_large.jpg

You can hear an excerpt of the song, “Cooker,” at The End Records‘ official MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/theendrecords

KYLESA Offers Update, Plan on Writing New Material

Savannah sludge-rockers KYLESA have offered an update on the band from home:

“We’re happy to announce that our video for ‘Hollow Severer’ will be airing on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball very soon,” guitarist/singer Laura Pleasants says. “You can view it now on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGFru8yyYIw). When viewed on Headbanger’s Ball in the context of other heavy music videos, I think that our video will offer something a little different than the average live footage video. The depiction of the narration is abstracted and literal with the use of simple claymation and an overall raw energy is captured by David and Allie of My Good Eye . They were great and easy to work with and we hope to work with them again in the future.

“In general news, we’ve toured pretty heavily the past few months supporting our latest release, Time Will Fuse its Worth, and everything went rather well. We’ve got a few shows starting today with awesome bands (TORCHE, MADE OUT OF BABIES and MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT), but we plan on taking some time off to write new material as we have a few projects coming up. Fun, creative projects, so stay in touch and we’ll keep you updated.”

Tour dates:
7/19 Orlando, FL – The Social
7/20 Tampa, FL – Transitions Art Gallery @ Skatepark of Tampa
7/21 Savannah, GA – Jinx (no MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT)
