New Supergroup EXPULSION (REPULSION, EXHUMED, INTRONAUT) Announce Debut Album Nightmare Future

Relapse Records is proud to announce the official signing of extreme metal act EXPULSION. The newly formed group features members of REPULSION, EXHUMED, PHOBIA, INTRONAUT, GRUESOME and numerous others. The band has shared the full details of their debut album Nightmare Future due out July 14th on CD/LP/Digital. Hear the track “Altar of Slaughter”:

Spawned from the cerebral mind of grind legend Matt Olivo (REPULSION), EXPULSION combines grind, punk and crust into a caustic musical vomit guaranteed to stack the corpses high. Olivo‘s partner-in-grind, Matt Harvey (EXHUMED, GRUESOME), was recruited over beers in a sweaty LA apartment to bring his classic brand of oratory assault. The additions of veterans, drummer Danny Walker (INTRONAUT, EXHUMED, PHOBIA) and bassist Menno Verbaten (LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH), complete the fit-to-burn outfit. Expect nothing but the best of throat-shredding vocals, relentless blast beats, buzzsaw riffs and raw bass tones.

Metal Meets Cats in New Book

It was inevitable.  The worlds of metal and people who love cats have finally converged in a new book, Metal Cats.  The book features photos of musicians, fans, and promoters of metal with their cats, including members of ISIS, AKIMBO, GHOUL, LUDICRA, EXHUMED, MORBID ANGEL, MUNICIPAL WASTE, NAUSEA, PHOBIA, and NAPALM DEATH.

A portion of the proceeds from this book and a series of benefit shows held along the West Coast will go towards one no-kill shelter in each of the four main cities visited.

Photographer Alexandra Crockett had the idea to give accolades to local musicians and artists in the metal scene, while also bringing to light no-kill shelters and their importance for animal rights.

PHOBIA – Unrelenting

PHOBIA has been unleashing furious crust grind for decades now, and while most of their peers have either slowed down or thrown in the towel, PHOBIA just keeps the beatings coming with their umpteenth release Unrelenting. On a release perfect for today’s ADD ridden youths, the veterans manage to cram in 17 songs in under 15 minutes, cutting out the fat and layers of throwaway filler. Instead, the band’s focus is on keeping the pace relentless and the delivery punishing. There are very few “breaks” in this exercise of full throttle blasting. Sure, there’s the 30 second mini intro “T.R.O.G.,” a quick musical guitar solo from guest Dorian Rainwater on “Rehashed” and the brief mid-tempo breakdown action on “Nothing Matters,” but for the most part the attacks keep coming, driven by the band’s 10,000th drummer Bryan Fajardo (also of KILL THE CLIENT and NOISEAR) whose blast patterns drive the songs into the listener’s skull. But if those tracks prove to be too “epic,” there’s also “You Get No Remorse,” which gives you a quick 10 second grind fix, perfect for those grinders on the go. Twenty-one years in and no signs of slowing down, Unrelenting is a testament to the band’s integrity, easily showing the pretenders and wannabes how uncompromising grindcore is done. INTRONAUT – Valley of Smoke

There’s nothing like artistic progression, maturation, and improvement. With Valley of Smoke, INTRONAUT take their melancholic and atmospheric style of prog to a new level. New sounds, tighter songwriting, and better arrangements color the record. Yes, those pristine clean electric guitars, manly bass lines, doomy heaviness, instrumental passages, and technical yet tasteful musicianship are all intact.

However, what jumps out more than anything else are the predominant use of clean vocals courtesy of lead vocalist/guitarist Sacha Dunable and guitarist Dave Timnick. “Tasteful” and “fitting” are the words that best describe these vocals. These long understated bellows add a new dimension to an already multifaceted sound.

Valley of Smoke is painted with that trademark textured prog soundscape that INTRONAUT is known for. And when I say “prog,” I’m referring to the prog of bands like YES and KING CRIMSON. An interesting observation is that there are many riffs and passages that could have easily fit into an ENSLAVED or IHSAHN album.

When is the last time you listened to an album that did not have a single straight forward, traditional, or simple drum pattern? Probably never. Well, drummer extraordinaire Danny Walker has laid down one of the most musical, skilled, and just plain excellent drum performances in heavy music. I bet your favorite drummer would be lovestruck by the highly creative drum patterns of Mr. Walker.

For the icing on the cake, TOOL‘s Justin Chancellor makes a guest appearance on the instrumental title track. Seriously, what does that say about INTRONAUT?

With each subsequent listen and the passage of time, Valley of Smoke will progressively make more sense. Subsequently, your appreciation of one of the most unique bands in extreme music will only increase. (Century Media Records)

PHOBIA – 22 Random Acts of Violence

Supposedly punk rock is dead, but apparently someone forgot to tell PHOBIA as the band continues its seemingly non-stop assault with the release of 22 Random Acts of Violence. Tempering the anarcho-crust punk fury with technical precision, PHOBIA‘s latest is dark and dirty, but as sharp as a surgeon’s razor. Having blastmaster Danny Walker (INTRONAUT, EXHUMED, UPHILL BATTLE) unleash blast after furious blast interspersed with flurries of fills couldn’t hurt, nor does the inclusion of former IMPALED/INTRONAUT alum Leon Del Muerte, who delivers both bass and guitar solos. Capturing the mayhem is former PHOBIA drummer John Haddad, with mixing and mastering from PIG DESTROYER‘s Scott Hull. As most bands heading into their twentieth year tend to slow down or soften up, riffmaster Steve Burda and frontman Shane McLachlan only seem to be writing faster riffs and angrier vocal lines. At just under a half hour, PHOBIA doesn’t waste time with pedestrian bullshit, choosing instead to keep the beatings coming at a relentless, breakneck pace. A testament to the band’s longevity and perseverance, 22 Random Acts of Violence serves as yet another triumph for California’s kings of crust grind. (Willow Tip Records)

INTRONAUT – The Challenger

After delivering the excellent Void last year, the prolific-as-fuck INTRONAUT return quickly with The Challenger. While not a true album, The Challenger is a generous EP containing three brand new tracks, five live songs and a remix. First things first, the opening title track features the explosive drumming of Danny Walker who unleashes a variety of intricate patterns, before the band settles into a driving groove a vibrant urgency that countless CONVERGE thieves struggle to attain, but won’t soon achieve. “Whittler of Fortune” in contrast, sees the band floating with open spaces and forays into jazz fusion, propelled by the lifting bass of Joe Lester. This continues with the band’s next excursion the mysterious “Deep Architecture” closing a trio of superb tracks. The band is live and loud from “Gleamer” through “They as (in Them)” capturing the band’s energy from a club setting. A remix of “Burning these Days” that closes things out is neither offensive nor outstanding, simply a different variation on solid song. That being said, The Challenger is an fine introduction to the uninitiated as well as tasty morsel, in anticipation of the band’s next feast, which if the first three songs on here indicate, should be a monster.
