SANCTUS Reunite for One-Off Session After Ten Year Hiatus

Sanctus (photo by Adam Murray)

On November 3rd, SANCTUS reunited for a one-off private rehearsal session. [Ed: I am a member of SANCTUS.] This was the band’s first activity in ten years.

While SANCTUS never officially “broke up”, the band endured a hiatus born of life “stuff” and geographic separation. After some online communication earlier this year, the idea to get back into a room and jam on old songs together became a reality.

Vocalist Jason McCrarey, drummer Michael Chi, bassist Brent Gibson, guitarist Mike O’Meara, keyboardist Adrian Ross, and myself (guitars) reconvened at Bedrock Studios in Echo Park for a five hour session. The time was spent jamming on (and re-learning) old songs followed by a short “performance” for close friends.

The set list included the three songs from the Fateshifter EP, “Fateshifter“, “Dream“, and “Turned Within“, and “November” and “If We Fall…” from the Aeon Sky album.

While there’s no guarantee the band will remain active in the traditional sense, the band isn’t “dead”. Infrequent live performances are not out of the question, and thanks to technology, the chance of new material is not unlikely.

Photos from the session were captured by Adam Murray. Check out the full gallery on the band’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151260735588147.492245.250427533146&type=1&l=d3c936146b

CARCASS to Tour U.S. Again in March

CARCASS have announced that they will be returning to the United States this March for the Exhumed to Consume II tour. The follow up to last year’s highly successful reunion tour, Exhume to Consume, will feature SUICIDE SILENCE, SAMAEL, ARSIS and PSYCROPTIC plus a few special guests on select dates. Vocalist/bassist and all around optimistic person Jeff Walker commented:

“Well, I’m pleased to announce that CARCASS is gonna settle it’s unresolved scores in the U.S.! There was some slight whimpers of discontent that we didn’t hit some cities such as Chicago and Denver last time round – places that were always hot spots of enthusiasm for us. So we’re coming back in March to finish off our unsettled business! We seemed to have had a profound influence on your economy and gas prices have gotten cheaper haha! That’s doesn’t mean we’re not gonna come through and provide some value for your buck with some old (and new) school friends and comrades such as SUFFOCATION, SAMAEL, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, EXODUS, SUICIDE SILENCE, etc. – check out locally as for who is on the bill where! And hey, I couldn’t think of anywhere better to be on my 40th birthday than the Sunshine Theatre in Albuquerque, New Mexico! We promise this will be the last time we darken your shores (I said that with my fingers crossed behind my back)!”

CARCASS Recounts North American Tour Experience

Reformed death metal/grindcore legends CARCASS recently completed their first North American tour since embarking on a reunion trek early this year. Guitarist Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY) commented on what their recent touring experience was like:

“What a tour! So many sold-out shows and fantastic, bordering on fanatical response from the fans everywhere we went! I’d like to thank the fans in the US/Canada/Mexico for waiting patiently and remaining fans all these years – and for coming out in such big numbers on the tour.

“For me personally it’s been quite emotional playing THOSE songs with THOSE guys again – really cool and almost too much fun. Playing the festivals in Europe over the summer was amazing, but I have to admit that I prefer being on tour playing every night in clubs – that’s when you get tight as a band and become a solid unit.

“Highlights? Without lying I’d have say that every night was special, it was just that kind of tour for me – but the NYC show at the sold-out Nokia Theatre was exceptionally killer, and Ken Owen (original CARCASS drummer) flew out for that one so the vibe was just incredible! That was the kind of night when you wish that the cameras were rolling.”

Regarding the other bands on the tour and the people behind the scenes who made it all happen the guitarist continued:

“The other bands on the bill were all excellent – SUFFOCATION, 1349, ABORTED and ROTTEN SOUND – they all killed it, I’m very happy that they could be a part of the ‘Exhumed To Consume’ tour!

“Special thanks to all the cool people that made the tour happen the way it did; Ash at TKO booking, Gerardo and his awesome Nuclear Blast team, and Albert Mudrian at DECIBEL magazine. Thanks for making the tour a special one!

“I’d also like to thank my endorsers Dean Guitars, Randall Amps and Digitech effects for their friendship and supplying the ‘tools of the trade’ that I need to get the job done!

“Now we are en route to Australia/New Zealand and Japan, KEEP ON ROTTING!”

AT THE GATES Announce Select Reunion Shows

Sweden’s AT THE GATES, who broke up at the peak of their success in 1996, have confirmed a select few reunion shows to take place next summer in Europe. Guitarist Anders Björler (THE HAUNTED) commented on the decisions to reunite:

“Well, it felt like the timing was right for once. We have been talking about a possible reunion for years now, but this was the first time everything fell into place. For me personally, it feels like getting closure. The break-up over ten years ago was abrupt and left a bad vibe between us that took years to get over. We have a better relationship today and a more relaxed approach to who we are and what we do. The time is right to get together and play some shows. Try to catch us live in the summer 2008. It could be your last chance”

The following festivals are confirmed so far:
July 4-July 6, Ruis Rock, Finland
July 31-Aug 2, Wacken Open Air, DE
Aug 15-Aug 17, Bloodstock, Derby, UK

More shows are expected to be announced.

UPDATE: Blabbermouth.Net conducted an interview with Anders regarding the reunion. Read it here.

CARCASS to Reunite for Wacken 2008

Legendary British death metal band, CARCASS, will reunite for next year’s Wacken Open Air festival. Bassist/vocalist, Jeff Walker, issued the following statement on behalf of the band:

“Well, they said it would never happen. In fact I said it would never happen. Then I noticed no one pays attention to what I say anyway and I sounded like an idiot…

“Summer 2008 will be the twentieth anniversary since the release of CARCASS‘ first studio album. It will be fourteen years since we last played live. We’ve decided to exhume the old corpse next Summer at Wacken. The timing is purely coincidental – it’s been a long journey to get to this point where myself, Bill Steer and Mike Amott (ARCH ENEMY) have enough common desire again to make it possible. We’re finally conceding to the demand that seems to be at an all time high and doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon. Any past reasons we may have had for not wanting to do it, or thinking it was impossible, have simply dissipated in the face of overwhelming interest in us performing THOSE riffs for a generation of believers who never had the opportunity back in the day. We could say we’re doing it for ‘the kids’ – but fuck that! We’re doing it ‘cos it will be fun again to play the classic CARCASS tunes!! Of course it would seem inappropriate for us to contemplate to do this without Ken Owen, but I assure you he’ll be there, and we’ll push some sticks in his hands and make him play, plus we’ll have a killer drummer to sit in and play HIS parts.

“Myself, Jeff Walker, on bass and vocals, ‘the semi-legendary’ Bill Steer and Mike Amott on lead guitar and Daniel Erlandsson (ARCH ENEMY), filling in for Ken on drums, look forwards to mutilating your hearing.

“And if we don’t do it? Who else will overshadow the LED ZEPPELIN reunion?

“Ha!

“Prepare to rot and roll.”

Next year’s Wacken Open Air (official website) is set to take place July 31 through August 2, 2008.

Rhino Records to Release BLACK SABBATH: The Dio Years and Live at Hammersmith Odeon

Together for a short but memorable time—a trio of studio albums, a classic live album, and a couple of tours—the second coming of BLACK SABBATH began in 1979 when founding members Tony Iommi and Terry “Geezer” Butler were joined by Ronnie James Dio. The former singer of ELF (and later RAINBOW and DIO) added his fiery, demonic howl to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group’s crushing mix of iconic riffs, gloomy grooves and doom-soaked imagery.

In late 2006 Dio, Iommi and Butler, joined by drummer Vinny Appice, reunited to record three new songs for Rhino Records’ era-spanning collection, BLACK SABBATH: The Dio Years. These recording sessions went so well that the quartet—billed as HEAVEN AND HELL—will launch a highly anticipated world tour this spring. The group will play a dozen dates in Canada in March before taking the stage of the famed Radio City Music Hall in New York City on March 30 to play their only U.S. date until the band launches a full tour of the States later this year.

The first comprehensive introduction to the band’s legacy, BLACK SABBATH: The Dio Years features a dozen classic studio recordings, plus one live track—“Children of the Sea” from 1982’s Live Evil. The collection also contains the three brand-new tracks—“The Devil Cried,” “Shadow of the Wind,” and “Ear in the Wall.” The disc will be available April 3rd.

Arranged chronologically, the compilation spotlights Dio’s time with BLACK SABBATH and draws heavily from the lineup’s 1980 debut and 1981 follow-up, Heaven and Hell< /strong> and Mob Rules respectively. The Dio Years also features “After All (The Dead),” “TV Crimes” and “I” from the singer’s brief reunion with SABBATH for the Dehumanizer album and tour.

On May 1, Rhino Handmade will release BLACK SABBATH: Live at Hammersmith Odeon, which features Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice getting hot one December night in London during their 1981 tour for Mob Rules. Previously unreleased, the concert spotlights SABBATH as they storms through 14 of the Dio-era’s best. The band also performs several pre-Dio classics including “Paranoid,” “Children of the Grave” and a white-hot version of “War Pigs.” The album will be available from Rhino Handmade as an individually numbered limited edition of 5,000 copies.

EMPEROR to Return to America

Norway’s EMPEROR have announced a return to the United States for three encore performances this spring. The band reunited last year for four reunion performances in the U.S. and to headline the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany.

Guitarist Samoth explains the situation: “We have made a decision to return to the US for a few additional shows. This time Chicago is also put on the map. The shows last summer were very successful and we had an amazing turn out and support from all the fans. It was also a bit stressful because of the embassy hassle that we unfortunately had to endure. So we feel a few more shows are due and this time, all visas are in order and the band will appear in its full command. See you all soon!”

Ticket on-sale information will be noted shortly. Here are the confirmed dates:

May 30 – The Metro, Chicago IL
June 1 – BB King Blues Club, New York NY
June 3 – Key Club, Los Angeles, CA

In release news, EMPEROR‘s guitar tabulature book, Scattered Ashes: A Decade of Emperial Wrath will finally be released in the US on Tuesday, January 23. The limited edition 132-page oversized book (with bonus CD) features a foreword and transcriptions by vocalist/guitarist Ihsahn. The book contains original tabs for thirteen EMPEROR classics featured on the band’s 2003 2-cd compilation of the same name; a collection of previously unavailable recordings, live and studio/demo outtakes. The book is available via Candlelight Records‘ official webstores (in the US www.candlelightrecordsusa.com; Europe www.candlelightrecords.co.uk).

Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward to Reunite

The highly anticipated reunion of the legendary BLACK SABBATH line-up of Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward appears to be shaping up and taking a new form. After various promoters have approached their respective management; the guys have started taking all of this very seriously, as they have wanted to reunite for some time now. It looks as if the new shape may be that of “HEAVEN AND HELL.” Yes, that’s the moniker that the band is likely to use on their new venture (Sharon Osborne owns an interest in the BLACK SABBATH name.).

If all goes well, HEAVEN AND HELL should be hitting the road in early 2007.
