THE WRETCHED END – In These Woods, From These Mountains

The Wretched End - In these Woods From these MountainsAs the years go by, the original torch bearers of the legendary Norwegian black metal scene travel further down their own unique music journeys.  While the spirit, soul, and creativity will always remain intact, the darkness, extremity, and sheer sonic force has often been left in the past.  However, THE WRETCHED END continue to redefine and progress not just what extreme metal is but also what Norwegian black metal is in 2016.  The Scandinavian super group, featuring Samoth (EMPEROR, ZYKLON, SCUM), Cosmo (MINDGRINDER, SCUM), and Nils Fjellström (DARK FUNERAL, IN BATTLE) have released an ambitious and progressive work that considerably widens the scope of their music.

In These Woods, From These Mountains is arguably the band’s best album to date.  The brutal thrash dimension from debut, Ominous, is minimal, and the death metal dimension found through the first two albums are largely secondary.  It is decidedly their blackest and most atmospheric to date.  There is an emphasis on using just as much clean guitar tone-riffs to create eerie, desolate atmospheres as there are on distorted ones.  Many of the clean guitar-tone riffs could easily fit into a SLOWDIVE or MY BLOODY VALENTINE album.  Samoth and Cosmo have also focused on creating melancholic melodies that come in at the perfect junctions.  In contrast to Ominous and Inroads, the riffing and song structures have more breathing room.  It’s less of a barrage of eighth and sixteenth notes and more about longer notes.  As a result, Dominator‘s drumming becomes more crucial in providing the backbone, which he does to brilliant effect.  Few extreme metal drummers have totally mastered the art of the ride cymbal like he has.

Other interesting aspects of In These Woods, From These Mountains that should not be overlooked are the use of keyboards, samples, and Cosmo‘s clean vocals.  He has done fantastic work with WINDIR contributing clean vocals.  And while his clean vocals here aren’t as prominent, it’s a welcome new dimension.

Every song provides a different look and highlights can be found all over.  And within each song is a full range of dynamics and dimension in play.  The nuances in artistry can fully be appreciated after successive listens.  So much ground is covered.  Comparisons to EMPEROR‘s IX Equilibrium come to mind.

Opener, “Dead Icons,” begins with a cold drum march before bursting into a speeding fireball with unique, eerie guitar riffs.  The lyrics easily apply to current events affecting the world today.  “Primordial Freedom” starts out ominous and doomy before taking flight with blast beats.  “Old Norwegian Soul” may be the “purest” black metal song, complete with the haunting, low end groans of Attila Csihar (MAYHEM, TORMENTOR), keyboards, melodies, and juxtaposed tempos.  “Atheos” is an absolute high point in the band’s career with its galloping, invincible momentum. The riff that comes in at the 3:27 mark lays everything to waste.  Devastating.  THE WRETCHED END closes In These Woods, From These Mountains with a glacier-sized cover of BEL CANTO‘s “Dewy Fields.”  Helping out is Einar Solberg (LEPROUS) on lead vocals and the criminally underrated LRZ (RED HARVEST) providing the epic synth and programming.

With In These Woods, From These Mountains,  THE WRETCHED END only seek to create an immediate classic album.  There is so much greatness to behold.  Hail.  (Indie Recordings)

Watch THE WRETCHED END’s Nils “Dominator” Fjellström Prove He is a Beast

THE WRETCHED END are currently working on their third album, which is set for a 2015 release.  They just posted a video of Nils “Dominator” Fjellström laying down some of his drum tracks.  Check out why he is the blaster master:

As you can see and hear, Nils exemplifies extreme metal drumming with the key ingredients of ride and crash cymbal work.  Awesome.

Watch 2009 Studio Sessions for THE WRETCHED END’s Ominous

Norwegian extreme metal super group, THE WRETCHED END, have just posted a video of the 2009 recording sessions for the band’s debut album, Ominous [read our review here]. The video focuses on drummer Nils Fjellström (IN BATTLE) with some footage of guitarist Samoth (EMPEROR, ZYKLON, SCUM) and vocalist/guitarist Cosmo (MINDGRINDER, SCUM, SOURCE OF TIDE) laying down some lead guitars.

THE WRETCHED END – Ominous

It’s been a long four years since we last heard new music from ZYKLON leader/guitarist Samoth. Regrouping anew with MINDGRINDER/SCUM vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Cosmo and Swedish drum beast Nils Fjellström (IN BATTLE, AEON, DARK FUNERAL), THE WRETCHED END prove to be cutting edge extreme metal.

Ominous embodies the qualities that (extreme) metal should possess: fierceness, technical prowess, great riffs, and a fist in the face delivery. The record is well balanced as brutality, a variety of tempos and riffing styles, black metal, death metal, thrash metal, melody, and dissonance all find their place. It’s logical that the next step in Samoth’s musical evolution bears similarities to ZYKLON’s swansong, Disintegrate. However, the distinguishing characteristics of THE WRETCHED END include more of his unique melodic style, a larger dose of brutal thrash sounds (i.e. classic SLAYER, SEPULTURA), and a more brooding, apocalyptic tone overall.

There are plenty of great tracks to be found on Ominous that make a strong impact. The first two songs, “Intro” and “Red Forest Alienation,” drop like a bomb as the band announce their arrival with a multi-armed tour de force. Songs like “The Armaggedonist” proudly update Norwegian black metal for 2010. “Numbered Days” is ominous as hell with its desolate feel and sinister horns. “Fleshbomb” and “Human Corporation” are just killer tracks with an unrelenting pace and nonstop catchy riffs.

Last but not least, the lyrics on Ominous are not to be ignored. Based on current events and looking at the world and society from a more global standpoint, there are plenty of impending crises that mankind would be smart to take heed of.

THE WRETCHED END’s Ominous is a strong and ambitious debut that aims at being the best metal album that it can possibly be. With a strong foundation laid, the future is theirs. (Nocturnal Art Productions/Candlelight Records)

THE WRETCHED END Signs to Nocturnal Art Productions/Candlelight Records

The Wretched EndTHE WRETCHED END, the new band featuring Samoth (ZYKLON, EMPEROR, SCUM), Cosmo (MINDGRINDER, SCUM), and Nils Fjellström (IN BATTLE, DARK FUNERAL, AEON), have announced their signing to Nocturnal Art Productions/Candlelight Records.

THE WRETCHED END was formed in 2008 as creative collaboration between Samoth and Cosmo. Samoth and Cosmo have previously worked together on the infamous deathpunk project SCUM. Cosmo has also played with ZYKLON on bass when the band toured Europe as special guest for MORBID ANGEL in 2001. The two have long spoken about collaborating on an extreme metal project. Most of the material for the debut album was composed throughout 2008, and by spring 2009 a full pre-production consisting of 11 tracks was recorded.

In the summer of 2009, Swede Nils Fjellström was confirmed as the drummer. The drums were successfully recorded in Strand Studio, Oslo, September 2009. The album recording continued through the end of 2009 and was completed in the first half of 2010. The recording line-up consists of Samoth on lead and rhythm guitar, Cosmo on lead and rhythm guitar, bass and vocals and Nils Fjellström on drums.

The debut album, tentatively entitled Ominous, will be released through Samoth’s own imprint label, Nocturnal Art Productions and marketed and distributed worldwide by Candlelight Records. Album tracks include “Zoo Human Syndrome,” “Red Forest Alienation,” “Residing in Limbo,” “Human Corporation,” “Numbered Days,” “Of Men and Wolves,” “The Juggernaut Theory,” “Fleshbomb,” “The Armageddonist,” “With Ravenous Hunger” and “Last Judgement.” The album is scheduled for release fall 2010.

THE WRETCHED END can musically best be described as a “Deathrash,” taking elements from both Death Metal and Thrash Metal. Many of the songs are quite groove orientated, and also offer a melodic side. Influences range from old-school to a more modern Death/Thrash metal sound.

BLOOD TSUNAMI – Thrash Metal

Often times, you never know what you’re gonna get when you buy an album from a band you really don’t know much about. However, BLOOD TSUNAMI clearly make their intentions known via their band name, album title, and cover artwork. These Norwegians say what they mean and mean what they say. Thrash Metal is pure, ugly, aggressive old school thrash metal. BLOOD TSUNAMI waste no time as they rip through the songs with a fine variety of prime riffing at a high speed pace. Though the band’s line-up may be most notable for vocalist/guitarist Pete Evil (host of MTV Nordic’s Headbangers Ball show) and drummer Faust (ABORYM, SCUM, ex-EMPEROR), the hearty contributions of guitarist Dor Amazon and bassist Bosse should not be overlooked. The band mix things up in terms of giving their songs good individual character so as to not become a monotonous blur. However, the biggest strength of BLOOD TSUNAMI is their ability to conjure up that true spirit and energy that made classic thrash metal so great and exciting to listen to. While the album progresses at a fireball’s pace, averaging around five minutes in length, the titantic “Godbeater” slows things down a tad and really takes the album to new places. The 10:02 instrumental is a journey filled with twists and turns on a grander level, almost like the way MAIDEN and METALLICA would get epic. There’s even a riff that easily could have been on SABBATH’s Vol. 4. While Thrash Metal may be BLOOD TSUNAMI’s debut album, they sound like seasoned veterans. Aren’t those the best kind of debut album? (Candlelight Records/Nocturnal Art Productions)

BLOOD TSUNAMI Sign to Nocturnal Art Productions

BLOOD TSUNAMI, the Oslo, Norway-based thrash metal band featuring drummer Bård G. Eithun (a.k.a. Faust; SCUM, ABORYM, ex-EMPEROR), has signed a three-album deal with Nocturnal Art Productions/Candlelight Records. The group will enter Lion Heart Studios in Oslo in September with engineer Øivind Voldmo Larsen to begin recording its debut album, tentatively titled Thrash Metal, for an early 2007 release. The album’s artwork “will be over-the-top fantastic and the man going nuts on the canvas is Alex Horley Orlandelli, who is also known for his great drawings for Marvel comics, Heavy Metal magazine and Image comics.”

In other news, BLOOD TSUNAMI has announced the addition of former GLUECIFER bassist Stu Manx to the group’s ranks.

BLOOD TSUNAMI is:

Pete – Lead Guitar and Vocals
Dor – Lead Guitar
Faust – Drums
Stu – Bass

BLOOD TSUNAMI previously worked with Øivind Voldmo Larsen at Lion Heart Studios on their Demo 2005, which can still be heard on the band’s official MySpace page.
