ARCH ENEMY, DEVILDRIVER, SKELETONWITCH, CHTHONIC @ Club Nokia, Los Angeles (9/27/11)

The North American Khaos 2011 Tour had a metal genre for everybody – black, thrash, nu, and melodic metal were all represented nicely.

CHTHONIC has gained quite an increase of popularity in the U.S. since their first go around at Ozzfest in 2007, and that notion was proven by the rabid crowd that showed up early giving full support to the “Orient metal” from the Far East.  The band performed tracks mostly from the new album, Takasago Army, and new tracks like “Takao” and “Southern Cross” went over tremendously well in the live setting. Vocalist Freddy Lim owned the crowd with his enthusiastic charisma and wowed onlookers whenever he pulled out the er-hu to accentuate why CHTHONIC stands out as a unique band.

Additionally, the band are set to embark on the Blackest of the Black tour with headliner DANZIG and support acts MOONSPELL, WINDS OF PLAGUE, and SKELETONWITCH.  The five-band tour will launch a 24-show trek on October 9th in Miami Beach, Florida and play its wrap-up show on November 10th in San Francisco, California.

Tour mastermind Glenn Danzig stated: “I’m very happy to have DIMMU BORGIR sharing the stage this time, as they are one of my favorite bands and [I] always wanted them on.  Should be an incredible 20th anniversary tour.”

DIMMU BORGIR founding member/guitarist Silenoz checks in from his native land with the following:

“Let there be no secrecy around the fact that we’re really looking forward to the Blackest of The Black tour, finally joining forces with DANZIG!  To get the chance to share the stage with one of the most influential icons in metal and rock history, Glenn Danzig, is of course something we’re very proud of!  Combined with the other bands, this will be a night to remember – if you’re into dark and heavy music, that is.  We actually take it for granted that you will be there!”

SKELETONWITCH – Beyond the Permafrost

Athens, Ohio’s SKELETONWITCH make their Prosthetic Records debut with their thrashin’ Beyond the Permafrost. The band is firmly rooted in classic 80’s thrash but with more of a contemporary and extreme feel to them with the inclusion of blast beats and extreme metal vocal stylings. SKELETONWITCH play with plenty of youthful energy and enthusiasm as evidenced by the non-stop pace at which they play (each song lasts an average of three minutes). Beyond the Permafrost is very consistent in quality, pacing, and impact. And this exactly what holds the album back. While there is nothing bad per se about the album, it just doesn’t seem to have enough of everything to push it to another level and be able to compete with the big boys. Surely, there is a lot of busy guitar work throughout the album with SKELETONWITCH trying their best to kick your ass in every which way that they know how. However, it just doesn’t carry enough impact to impress (finicky) long time thrash fans. At the end of the day, SKELETONWITCH are still young and have room to improve and grow, which should ideally fuel their fire for better albums in the future. (Prosthetic Records)
