We are saddened to learn that SLAYER guitarist and founding member, Jeff Hanneman, has passed away. He was 49. Here is a statement from the band:
“SLAYER is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) 2013 has now concluded, and many new and innovative products were featured on the massive lot at the Anaheim Convention Center. Many of these products pertain to musicians in the Metal scene, and some of the products are just plain cool.
The turnout was crazy as usual – some were there to do business, while others were there to be seen. Metal remains one of the best represented genres of music, as members of SLAYER, ANTHRAX, CANNIBAL CORPSE, MORBID ANGEL, NILE, MONSTROSITY, MEGADETH, and morewere checking out the latest and greatest gear as well. Without further ado, let’s get started with what APESHIT thought were the best products NAMM had to offer for our metal fans out there. Continue reading →
Every year, NAMM bestows upon us shiny new toys for musicmakers of all genres to make new (and old) sounds with. NAMM 2012 was no less a musical heaven for the products, gadgets, and innovations that help make metal happen. We took a spin through the showroom floor at Anaheim Convention Center to check out some new equipment that our metal cohorts use and abuse. Full report after the jump. Continue reading →
MACHINE HEAD guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn joins Gary Holt of EXODUS, Alex Skolnick of TESTAMENT, and other Bay Area thrash metal luminaries contributing written material to the deluxe upcoming photo book Murder in the Front Row: Shots From the Bay Area Thrash Metal Epicenter, by Harald Oimoen and Brian Lew. This massive volume is due December 2011 from Bazillion Points Books, and sneak peeks and preorders are available at this location:
In the book, Flynn recalls his initiation into the local scene via highly-energized gigs like RAVEN, METALLICA, and EXODUS at the Berkeley Keystone; Texas transplants D.R.I. at the Mabuhay Gardens; and EXCITER at the Stone. “I became totally obsessed,” Flynn writes. “I punched a kid and broke his nose at an ANTHRAX show at the Kabuki for saying [EXODUS guitarist] Gary Holt sucked. Yes, I was a thrasher, willing to fight and bang and bleed for my thrash metal gods.” Continue reading →
After last week’s successful “The Big 4“ concert in Indio, California, the heavy metal foursome of METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, and ANTHRAX have announced an East Coast edition of the show at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York on September 14th, 2011.

Check out some interviews in LA Weekly with SLAYER‘s Tom Araya and ANTHRAX‘s Scott Ian. They talk about the original Big 4 show in Bulgaria, the Coachella festival (which took place at the same venue as the upcoming Big 4), and their festival buddies METALLICA and MEGADETH.
CANNIBAL CORPSE guitarist Pat O’Brien will fill in for EXODUS‘ Gary Holt when Holt leaves the SLAYER European tour to play with EXODUS at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile on April 4. Holt has been filling in for SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman since the tour kicked off February 26 in Australia.
Holt‘s last show with SLAYER will be April 4 in Padova, Italy. O’Brien will join the band for the April 6 show in Croatia, and will finish the European dates with SLAYER that wrap up on April 14 in Holland.
Hanneman has amazed his doctors with his speedy recovery from an infection thought to have been caused by a spider bite. Following surgery on his right arm, he continues his physical therapy and has already been practicing with his guitar.
The collective of heavy metal titans known as “The Big 4” of METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, and ANTHRAX have been confirmed to share the stage together via Goldenvoice‘s “The Big 4” for North American fans. The four bands shared the stage for the first time together last year in Europe. This event is slated to be the only time the bands will play together in the U.S.
The bands will take over Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA (home of Coachella and Stagecoach) on April 23, 2011. Tickets will range between $99 and $199 and go on sale Friday, January 28 at 10 AM.

If you got into metal after the early 90’s, then Marty Friedman may not have a place in your heart. Back when he was unleashing his godly guitar talents in CACOPHONY or MEGADETH, he was one of the most revered and popular guitarists in metal. So yeah, few people outside Japan or his diehard fanbase has heard much from Mr. Friedman in the many years since he quit MEGADETH and subsequently moved to Japan to co-host TV shows and play with Japanese artists.
Here is a video of Marty playing a Rust in Peace medley featuring some of his most memorable guitar solos. It was filmed on May 13, 2005 at an Ibanez guitar clinic in Korea.
If you’re curious about what Marty‘s been up to in Japan, check out these awesome clips of a TV show, Rock Fujiyama, from a few years back where Marty co-hosts and SLAYER‘s Kerry King guest stars. I asked Kerry a few years ago about this television appearance and he said that it was one of the coolest things that he’s ever done and that Marty is one of the greatest guitarists ever.
