GOATWHORE – Carving Out the Eyes of God

On album four from these masters of blackened death, GOATWHORE unleashes possibly their most focused, structured work to date with Carving Out the Eyes of God. Opening track “Apocalyptic Havoc” opens up the flood gates with a fist-pumping metal anthem replete with sing along hook, “Who needs a God when you’ve got Satan?” Relentless and energetic in its pace, the song sets the tone for the album, balancing hooks with aggression. “The All Destroying” keep the blasting on point, but the band tempers the speed with flowing angry riffs that eventually settle in to a CELTIC FROST/HELLHAMMER-worshipping groove that GOATWHORE has become known for. “In Legions I am Wars of Wrath” is the album’s centerpiece – delivering a relentless torrent of speed with a driving attack before changing it up with some clever half tempo sections, highlighted by a Schuldiner-inspired solo from guitarist Sammy Duet channeling the mighty late DEATH guitarist. The bottom heavy groove from Nathan Bergeron keeps things nice and punchy throughout, while drummer Zack Simmons pounds the snot out of his drums. In the thick of it all, vocalist Ben Falgoust snarls, growls, and shouts his way through the proceedings (with some backup help from guitarist Duet), weaving tales of death, darkness, woe, and decay throughout the album. Erik Rutan captures the band’s blasphemy with skill, offering greater clarity than on the album’s predecessor The Haunting Curse as well as the band’s earlier, muddier releases. But the standout is Sammy Duet who delivers his most melodic involved solos to date, and to his credit, offers guitar work that enhances the songs as oppossed to drowning them with flashy overly technical playing. Ominous closer “To Mourn & Forever Wander Through Forgotten Doorways” finishes the album on a strong note offering up one of the band’s better songs to date. All in all, a fine outing from America’s finest blackened metal troupe. (Metal Blade Records)

SOILENT GREEN Record Theme Song for Adult Swim’s Squidbillies

New Orleans grinders, SOILENT GREEN, have recorded the opening theme song for the fourth season of Adult Swim‘s Squidbillies animated series. Here’s what vocalist Ben Falgoust had to say:

Squidbillies is the best cartoon…excuse me…show on TV/Internet/Cable around! I felt that way before we did the theme tracks and I feel even stronger about it since I’ve seen the new episodes, despite our involvement with the program, of course.

“It was an awesome and strange experience to track these theme songs for the Squidbillies. It was pretty shocking when were contacted by them to be involved with this project. I give credit to the rest of the guys in the band for pulling it off from a strange but fun perspective in incorporating SOILENT GREEN‘s style into the theme song for the show.”

Season four of Squidbillies kicks off May 17th and new episodes will air Sunday nights at midnight (ET, PT).

SOILENT GREEN previously toured with Adult Swim‘s animated death metal band, DETHKLOK (of Metalocalypse).

APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2008

We finally got off our asses and did it.  It’s already the year 2009, but we’ve complied a list of our top albums of 2008.  Compiling such a list is never easy, and 2008 was no exception.  Maybe it was a lack of albums that really stood out, or maybe we just weren’t paying enough attention.  Regardless, we took a quick look back on the metal albums we felt were notable in 2008.

SOILENT GREEN – Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction

Unlike the vast majority of extreme metal acts that sing about death, murder, suicide, disaster, pain and suffering, few have actually lived through these situations as the mighty SOILENT GREEN has. Soldiering on with more conviction and perseverance than most of the allegedly tough hardcore bands in existence, these sons of NOLA have emerged from the swamps with possibly their finest album since the classic, Sewn Mouth Secrets. Despite the band’s long-running trademark of cramming in as many riffs as humanly possible in the span of one song (witness the amount of changes that go down in the mere two-minute “Blessed in the Arms of Servitude“) the songs seem to flow almost effortlessly. Inevitable Collapse also displays a new found maturity as the band grooves more often, helping to make the album’s seemingly never ending roller coaster-like changes blend smoother than in past efforts. Dynamics also play a more prominent role on songs such as “In the Same Breath,” “Lovesick,” and “For Lack of Perfect Words.” They also sparingly feature guitarist Brian Patton‘s effective usage of a banjo-mandolin styled instrument known as the Mcnally strumstick, which provides a welcome breather from the otherwise relentless onslaught. In what must have been an emotional creative process, “All this Good Intention Wasted in the Wake of Apathy” pieces together older SOILENT GREEN material that former singer Glenn Rambo was involved in as a tribute to their friend who died in Hurricane Katrina. Although the chaotic structure of the band’s songs may make it difficult for listener’s to find a riff to grasp on to, Sewn Mouth Secrets is a triumph in every sense of the word. A true album, best experienced from beginning to end, SOILENT GREEN has delivered the strongest and most deserving comeback of the year. (Metal Blade Records)
