SAINT VITUS, WEEDEATER, SOURVEIN, SPLITH @ Bootleg Theater (10/10/12)

Last night, the superb lineup of SAINT VITUS, WEEDEATER, SOURVEIN, and SPLITH invaded the beautiful Bootleg Theater in Echo Park/Silver Lake adjacent. The rear theater room was opened for the night’s serving of doom — a good thing thanks to it being a larger space and having better sound. The front bar area, meanwhile, made for a fine drinking and socializing area. Few other venues such an optimal set up — smoking patios don’t count.
Unfortunately, by the time I arrived, the reformed SPLITH, which features renowned producer Billy Anderson, and SOURVEIN, who I’ve been wanting to see for some while, had already played.

WEEDEATER‘s set was expectedly pummeling, rattling with loads of low end. Vocalist and bassist Dixie Dave stomped and shook like a crazy man while his raspy bark competed with the thundering low frequencies. Three different drummers took to the kit throughout the set, and MONDO GENERATOR‘s Nick Oliveri was spotted up front entranced by WEEDEATER‘s sludge power.

The heavy got heavier. SAINT VITUS followed, delivering thick riffs in a subdued yet commanding manner. Wino and guitarist Dave Chandler commanded the audience through their long grey hairs and mastery of doom. Heads banged in approval as SAINT VITUS stamped their sound into the Bootleg audience, young and old.

WEEDEATER’s Dixie Dave Shoots Self in Foot; Recording Postponed

WEEDEATER have been forced to postpone their recently announced recording session as vocalist/bassist, Dixie Dave, has literally shot himself in the foot.  Here’s a message direct from the band:

“As most of you know, here in the WEEDEATER camp we pride ourselves on a long tradition of shooting our band in the proverbial foot right before we’re supposed to do something important. Whether it’s a big tour, a recording session, or whatever else we’re supposed to do, invariably we will find some way to try and thwart our grandiose plans.

“Well, it’s no different for this recording session, except that this time we really did shoot ourselves in the foot. In fact we regret to inform all of you that this weekend, Dixie Dave shot his big toe off whilst cleaning his favorite shotgun. Yup, that’s right.

“When reached for comment, Mr. Collins gave a quote that speaks for itself: ‘It wasn’t my intention to shoot off my big toe. This really fucking sucks and the pain is unbearable.’

Mr. Collins‘ doctors have advised that he is to be bed-ridden for the next few weeks during his recovery. This will obviously affect the recording session (and the few surrounding shows in Jan/Feb), which will now have to be postponed until after the March/April ‘nine-toe’ tour.

“Said tour is still 100% on, however, so check back soon for updates on venues and exact dates. It looks like the support bands will be awesome and the band is really stoked to play this new material after touring for so many years on the same basic set. Yeah…we knew that too, sorry but we’re about to make good on it. And of course after all, we gotta keep workin’, like workin’ men do. Shooting your big toe off isn’t free, for fuck’s sake!

“So to re-cap…Keko sacrificed his pinkie for DOWN/MELVINS, Shep broke his hand for TODAY IS THE DAY, and now Dixie has generously offered up his big toe for Steve Albini to nibble on. Unless overtly fond of Limburger cheese and rotten flesh, Master Steve is advised to decline. Good day.”

WEEDEATER – God Luck and Good Speed

There’s truly nothing quite like a quality doom album, especially the kinds drenched in whiskey and blowing out giant plumes of weed smoke. The massive, ultra thick down-tuned groove of WEEDEATER is a monster as evidenced on their new album, God Luck and Good Speed. This band is only a three-piece but they sound as massive and heavy-as-hell as it gets. God Luck and Good Speed has this great sense of feel that is nihilist, fucked up, and coherent all at the same time. And that damn groove is just unshakeable as the band just plows through everything in its path (i.e. “$20 Peanut” and “Weed Monkey”). The record as a whole is filled with sweet, bluesy doom riffs that would make SABBATH proud. The only break from the wall of sound before the last track is on the somber, banjo-based “Alone.” If the listener wasn’t already depressed, the song is sure to put them in an empty place. Even though the record clocks in at 38 minutes, it all goes by a little too fast. But then again, that’s what the “play” button is there for. Quality doom albums don’t come around every week like other genres of heavy music so it’d be wise to savor the goodness sooner rather than later. (Southern Lord Records)
