RED HARVEST: Nightmare in Red

While the black metal scene in Norway has taken up most of the country’s extreme music spotlight, RED HARVEST are a band who’ve been honing their own brand of chaos under the radar. Their latest album, Internal Punishment Programs, continues to build on their impressive existing body of work. If there ever was a band that should be commissioned to provide the soundtrack to a dark, apocalyptic future, RED HARVEST would be the perfect fit. APESHIT caught up with guitarist Turbonatas to learn more about one of Norway’s most underrated exports.

MY DYING BRIDE: Shedding Light on Darkness

In the world of music, there are leaders and then there are followers. Since their formation in 1990, MY DYING BRIDE have always spearheaded their own path. Others simply followed. They were one of a handful of UK bands that helped to bring doom metal to the forefront of the underground metal scene and transform it forevermore. Groundbreaking albums such as Turn Loose the Swans, The Angel and the Dark River, and 34.788%…Complete remain as some of the most revered underground metal albums. Gothic themes, overbearing feelings of misery, darkness, and depression are the MY DYING BRIDE trademarks. With their latest work, Songs of Darkness, Words of Light, the band has crafted another solid album that traverses all over the MY DYING BRIDE map. THE CROWN: The Return of the Deathrace King

(Evil) spirits have been running high in THE CROWN camp since the recent reunion with their original voice-from-hell, Johan Lindstrand. The Swedish metallers’ highly publicized one-off (2002’s Crowned in Terror album) with former AT THE GATES screamer, Tomas Lindberg, found the two camps in a situation with a serious lack of chemistry prompting a quick-but-inevitable split. Fortunately the terror set was short as destiny soon cast Johan back to resume his rightful role in THE CROWN resulting in the dangerous new album, Possessed 13. Guitarist Marko Tervonen enthusiastically chatted with APESHIT about Johan‘s new haircut and other significant things such as Possessed 13 and the importance of having Johan back in the fold.

SOILWORK: Forging the Steel

Poised to conquer all of metal, SOILWORK have grown in leaps and bounds since their humble beginnings as just another Swedish death metal band. Their latest album Figure Number Five, while many would argue isn’t their best, is still their most blossoming effort packed with their most refined songs yet. Memorable hooks and sing-along choruses have been the order lately and Figure Number Five, which sees SOILWORK at their most relaxed state, is no exception. APESHIT sat down with guitarist Peter Wichers during the band’s stop at The Palace in Hollywood (check out photos from the show too) during their summer tour with IN FLAMES, CHIMAIRA, and UNEARTH, and chatted about the band’s well-oiled music making machine and path to domination.

THE GATHERING: Becomes eclectic

THE GATHERING are well known for being a major player in the female-fronted underground metal movement. They paved the way for bands such as LACUNA COIL by carving out a niche for female vocals in a testosterone-heavy genre. Despite that, the band’s most shining characteristic is their ability to evolve with each release and maintain that unique sense of atmosphere and emotion. Souvenirs, their first independent record, explores new musical territory and features a notable collaboration with ULVER mastermind Trickster G. APESHIT got in touch with keyboardist Frank Boeijen about the band’s musical and personal progression as well as their newfound independence.
