GRAVEYARD, RADIO MOSCOW, THE SHRINE @ Bootleg Theater (1/28/12)

GRAVEYARD‘s sold out show with RADIO MOSCOW, and THE SHRINE at Bootleg Bar in Los Angeles this past Saturday was no doubt the hottest ticket in town. The buzz was huge and rightfully so–their latest album, Hisingen Blues, is an honest-to-goodness, quality serving of 70s rock ‘n roll that has garnered much acclaim.

So while word rippled through the internet that the show had sold out, the venue subsequently moved the show into the larger (and better sounding) theater room in the back of Bootleg Bar. A limited number of tickets were then released with an additional unguaranteed chance for tickets at the door. Upon arrival, the line for fans waiting to purchase tickets was at least 40 people deep with THE SHRINE already loudly blasting away inside. It turns out that everyone who showed up without pre-sale tickets was fortunately able to get in. Continue reading

BORIS @ The El Rey, Los Angeles (11/12/11)

Touring in support of their two recent new albums, Heavy Rocks, Attention Please, and forthcoming new album, New Album (our review), Japan’s BORIS made their return to the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, on November 12th, having played there their last time in L.A. just over a year ago.

While known for their unpredictable and sometimes unconventional style of music output (doom, noise, drone, psych rock, pop, shoegaze), BORIS are relatively straightforward within a live setting. That is not to say, however, that their material isn’t (and wasn’t) varied.

“13 Dates of Doom”: GHOST Announce U.S. Shows

Sweden’s GHOST have announced a set of U.S. shows following their unfortunate drop-off from the recent ENSLAVED tour. Dubbed “13 Dates of Doom“, the tour marks the first shows since their appearance at Maryland Death Fest and The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC earlier this year.

GHOST‘s debut full-length has received much fanfare and praise, and rightfully so, as Opus Eponymous is one of our favorite albums of the year.

Members of INTRONAUT, ABYSMAL DAWN, THE FACELESS Surface BEREFT Project; Listen to New Song

BEREFT, a Los Angeles based doom band featuring Sacha Dunable of INTRONAUT/GRAVITON (guitars, backing vocals), Derek Donley of NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW/GRAVITON (drums, backing vocals), Charles Elliot of ABYSMAL DAWN (vocals, guitars), and Derek Rydquist formerly of THE FACELESS (bass, backing vocals), have posted a new song, “Withered Efflorescence“, on their Facebook page.

“This will give everyone a taste of what this band is about; dark, depressing, doom,” commented Charles Elliott. “Definitely different from what we do in our usual bands. It’s heavy as hell and we’re all really proud how the record and collaboration came out, and we hope people feel the same way.

“On this particular track Sacha and Derek D. worked together on the music while Derek R. and I worked on the lyrics. I’ve always envisioned vocal tradeoffs with Sacha on this one, ever since the demo he sent me years ago, so that’s what you hear on the chorus.

“This project has been on the back burner since 2008, so we hope people enjoy finally listening to it as much as we do.”

The debut album from BEREFT was recorded and mixed by drummer Derek Donley. Mastering has handled by Brian Elliott (EXHUMED, DYING FETUS) at Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, FL.

The band will be playing their first show on September 30th at The Handbag Factory in Downtown, Los Angeles.
