This tour has a great mix for fans of different genres, as the top billed bands are from Europe, but they all bring a different flavor to the table. ROTTING CHRIST and MELECHESH provide the slower and heavy dosage, while HATE brings the brutal death metal end. I wasn’t too worried that I missed the hardcore-turned-black metal band, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, but death metal veterans HATE brought the crowd to life with an energetic set focused mainly on their new album, Erebos. With speed, intensity and blast beats filling the air, HATE has transformed from a Polish DEICIDE copycat band to BEHEMOTH Jr., but that’s not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.

While HATE teased the crowd, everyone was prepared for the Middle Eastern onslaught of MELECHESH. I’m always excited when bands come to play in the U.S. for the first time, and MELECHESH did not disappoint, as they plowed through an intense set ranging from Sphynx to the latest album, The Epigenesis. Vocalist Ashmedi fired up the crowd with his enthusiastic guitar playing and screeches from hell. Highlights of the set included “Ghouls of Nineveh” and “Deluge of Delusional Dreams,” while “Grand Gathas of Baal Sin” got everyone amped up as the entire crowd was doing fist pumps and chanting along with Ashmedi. As MELECHESH closed with “Rebirth of Nemesis,” the fury of the crowd was unleashed as a sea of hair was flying everywhere, and both the band and crowd were satisfied with each other.

ROTTING CHRIST had a tough act to follow, as MELECHESH had the crowd in a frenzy, but almost everybody stuck around to watch the headliners. While mostly playing tracks off Aealo, the band threw in a few oldies for good measure. One-third of the way through the set, frontman Sakis Tolis had issues with his guitar and wrist, and the band continued the show with only one guitar. Guitarist Giorgos Bokos kept the fans entertained with solos and scales while waiting for Sakis to come back on stage. As Sakis returned, he sang the songs with gusto while making hilarious faces and entertaining the crowd with his gestures. ROTTING CHRIST weren’t fast or brutal, but they were sure heavy as hell. Despite the technical difficulties, everybody had a good time and enjoyed the set by the Greek metallers and are anxious for the band to come back to the states again.

Check out some pictures of MELECHESH and ROTTING CHRIST above.

IMMOLATION Commence Recording of Nuclear Blast Debut

Esteemed death metal stalwarts, IMMOLATION, have entered Milbrook Sound Studios in New York with longtime producer Paul Orofino to begin recording their Nuclear Blast debut and eighth album over all. The band posted the following update on the new album and recording:

“Today we have begun the recording process for our 8th full length release. Once again we have entered Millbrook Sound Studios in upstate Millbrook, New York and will start tracking with Paul Orofino tomorrow. This will be our 6th time visiting Millbrook Studios and we are really looking forward to the whole process.

“The new album will contain 10 songs of the strongest material we have ever written. The new material is more violent and aggressive, with fast sections that take us to a new level of speed and intensity, while complementing the dark and sullen heavier moments. There are plenty of miserable and militant movements to please the die hard and new IMMOLATION fans alike.

“We’ve spent the past two months rehearsing and fine tuning the songs so that all ten are stand-outs and create a complete listening experience. Needless to say, we are all very pleased and enthusiastic about the new material and are anxious to debut it to the fans.

“Following the recording process here in Millbrook, we have decided to try something new for the mixing process, so we have enlisted the talents of Zack Ohren (DECREPIT BIRTH, SUFFOCATION, ALL SHALL PERISH). We are confident he will do an excellent job in giving a fresh new life to the IMMOLATION sound.

“We are still in the process of getting ideas together for the album’s concept and cover art, but these final details will be worked out in the near future.”

ABYSMAL DAWN: Seek New Drummer; Begin Writing New Record

Los Angeles, CA’s blackened-death metal force ABYSMAL DAWN recently returned home after an insanely long North American tour with GOATWHORE, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, DAATH and SUCCESS WILL WRITE APOCALYPSE ACROSS THE SKY. Vocalist/guitarist Charles Elliott gave a recap on the tour, talks about the writing process for the next record, and announce drummer search:

“We’re back after a crazy 9 weeks on the road with GOATWHORE, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, DAATH and SUCCESS WILL WRITE APOCALYPSE ACROSS THE SKY! It was the longest tour we ever had the pleasure of being a part of and we had fucking blast! We played a lot of places that we’d either never had the pleasure of playing or hadn’t played since 2006, and we had a great time bringing the metal to you fuckers. We want to thank all the people that came out to the shows a tore shit up, drank with us, smoked with us, hung out with us, let us crash at their houses, or were just plan down to earth metal maniacs. You guys made it worth while!

“Unfortunately we were sharing backline on the tour with the other bands and both SWWAATS and ABIGAIL WILLIAMS had to go home early. That meant that we were without a drum kit for the rest of the tour, and in turn the last 8 shows were cancelled because promoters weren’t interested in a 1 band tour package. We want to apologize to anyone that was planning on coming those shows to see us and we promise we’ll be back soon!

“We are currently back at home and we’ve been busy continuing to write material for the follow up to ‘Programmed to Consume.’ We can tell you already by some of the demos that this is some of the fastest, most
technical, and yet still atmospheric stuff we’ve ever done. We hope to have a new album for you guys by next Summer at the latest so stay tuned for updates!

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thanks Ken Bedene of BLOOD OF CAIN who’s been filling in on drums for us for our last two tours. Our former drummer Terry Barajas left last April due to not being able to financially keep up with the harsh touring life style. He’s still a good friend of ours and we wish him the best of luck and thank him for helping to get the band to where it is today. We love you brother!

“We are currently auditioning drummers looking to join the band full time who is either in the Los Angeles area or willing to relocate. If you’re interested in trying out please e-mail [email protected] or send footage of you playing the songs ‘Walk the Path of Fire,’ ‘Programmed to Consume‘ and ‘Compulsory Resurrection‘ to the same e-mail address. We have scratch guitar and click tracks upon request. Until a suitable replacement is found Ken has agreed to play all our upcoming shows and even play on our next record if need be so we shouldn’t miss a step. Please only contact us if you’re willing to tour, put your heart and soul into this band, and aren’t just looking for a band to add to your résumé until something bigger comes along. We WILL kill you!”

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS Debut EP Release Date Set

Candlelight Records has confirmed January 23, 2007 as the North American release date for ABIGAIL WILLIAMSLegend. Amassing an impressive quarter million hits to their MySpace page (this in under six months!), ABIGAIL WILLIAMS defy classification by taking the groove and melody of Gothenburg-styled death metal, face-smashing breakdowns of the hardcore scene and top it with the bombastic and epic-flavored frostbite of black metal’s evilest hordes.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS‘ full length debut is planned for an early Spring 2007 release. Additional touring plans will be announced in cooperation with the album’s release date.

Candlelight II: Phoenix Rising Tour with ENSLAVED, DARK FUNERAL

Candlelight Records today proudly announces its second North American label tour package. Set to kick off January 9, Candlelight II: Phoenix Rising will feature the long-awaited stateside return of DARK FUNERAL (Sweden), ENSLAVED (Norway) and introduce newcomers ABIGAIL WILLIAMS (USA). The tour will visit 20-plus cities before concluding on February 4.

DARK FUNERAL guitarist/founding member Lord Ahriman says, “since we announced the first European tour dates for our latest album Attera Totus Sanctus earlier this year, there has been a constant and completely overwhelming flow of mails from the US and Canada asking when the hell we will tour North America. Well finally dates are being booked! Last time we toured the US supporting CANNIBAL CORPSE in 2002 we had a blast. Everyone we met during that tour was really cool. The crowd was totally awesome. It’ll be killer to finally return overseas! I have the feeling that this is going to be one hell of a tour and we hope see you in January!”

ENSLAVED guitarist Ivar Bjornson adds, “I have awaited this moment since I don’t know when and now it is official: an extensive ENSLAVED tour in North America is becoming reality. We have been working every possible angle of getting over to present our music for years. We are looking forward to seeing each and every one of you at the shows. You won’t be disappointed; neither will we.”

Dates and ticket on sale information for Candlelight II: Phoenix Rising will be announced shortly.
