Members of INTRONAUT, ABYSMAL DAWN, THE FACELESS Surface BEREFT Project; Listen to New Song

BEREFT, a Los Angeles based doom band featuring Sacha Dunable of INTRONAUT/GRAVITON (guitars, backing vocals), Derek Donley of NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW/GRAVITON (drums, backing vocals), Charles Elliot of ABYSMAL DAWN (vocals, guitars), and Derek Rydquist formerly of THE FACELESS (bass, backing vocals), have posted a new song, “Withered Efflorescence“, on their Facebook page.

“This will give everyone a taste of what this band is about; dark, depressing, doom,” commented Charles Elliott. “Definitely different from what we do in our usual bands. It’s heavy as hell and we’re all really proud how the record and collaboration came out, and we hope people feel the same way.

“On this particular track Sacha and Derek D. worked together on the music while Derek R. and I worked on the lyrics. I’ve always envisioned vocal tradeoffs with Sacha on this one, ever since the demo he sent me years ago, so that’s what you hear on the chorus.

“This project has been on the back burner since 2008, so we hope people enjoy finally listening to it as much as we do.”

The debut album from BEREFT was recorded and mixed by drummer Derek Donley. Mastering has handled by Brian Elliott (EXHUMED, DYING FETUS) at Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, FL.

The band will be playing their first show on September 30th at The Handbag Factory in Downtown, Los Angeles.

ABYSMAL DAWN – Leveling the Plane of Existence

ABYSMAL DAWN’s Programmed to Consume fit the Relapse roster perfectly, as the album had too many riffs and drum beats that rivaled ORIGIN and other similarly casted bands. The debut albums from THE FORSAKEN and DISINCARNATE sounded like a heavy influence for ABYSMAL’s earlier material, but Leveling the Plane of Existence finally showcases their songwriting without being pigeonholed with the rest of Relapse’s roster.

After the obligatory intro, the album kicks into high gear with “Pixelated Ignorance,” one of the best tracks found on Leveling. The production is crisp, and new drummer Scott Fuller immediately blasts his way alongside the technical riffs. Frontman Charles Elliott belts out Mikael Akerfeldt-inspired growls, and towards the end of the track he does a solo trade off with guest shredder, Moyses Kolesne, of KRISIUN fame.

While slower songs are not the norm for ABYSMAL’s approach, “In Service of Time” slows the pace a little, and includes some tasty riffs before segueing into “Rapture Renowned,” which unfortunately, follows the predictable formula from Programmed to Consume. Songs like “Perpetual Dormancy” and “Manufactured Humanity” have a BLOODBATH feel, largely in part to the vocals.

Towards the latter part of Leveling, the songs take shape nicely, and the opening riff for “My Own Savior” could be mistaken as MORBID ANGEL at their prime. Excellent vocal patterns and catchy riffs and solos show that ABYSMAL DAWN have come together and matured as a unit, and Elliott is also unafraid to take risks. On the final track, “The Sleeper Awakens,” many may be surprised at not only the acoustic guitars that come into play, but Elliott’s vocals on this particular track. A few epic solos are showcased to close out the album and this track is a testament to moving onto new grounds instead of playing the same blast, growl, blast, solo formula.

ABYSMAL DAWN specializes in a healthy dose of brutal and technical death metal, and the band is headed in the right direction with the right balance of melody, speed, and guitar wizardry. Unlike ORIGIN, ABYSMAL DAWN has grasped the idea that you don’t have to play a thousand riffs at 100 mph in order to write a good album. (Relapse Records)

ABYSMAL DAWN Issue Studio Update

Los Angeles death metallers, ABYSMAL DAWN, are currently recording the follow-up to their Relapse debut at Trench Studio with John Haddad (PHOBIA, INTRONAUT, HIRAX). The as-yet-untitled album will be mixed by Erik Rutan (CANNIBAL CORPSE, GOATWHORE, HATE ETERNAL) at his Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida. A fall release is expected.

Main man Charles Elliot issued the following update: “We recently wrapped up recording drums at Trench Studios and the final product is incredible! I think we really got some amazing tones this time and Scott [Fuller] delivered an amazing over the top drum performance. Our music has definitely become more demanding technically and Scott really stepped things up in the drum department. We really wanted to get a natural drum sound so the guys in RECIPROCAL were kind enough to let us rent their top of the line Pearl kit from them. Thanks a lot guys!

“Right now I’m currently laying down all the rhythm guitar tracks with Mike Bear (ARTISAN, ex-PROTOTYPE) at Artisan Road Studios in Encino, CA. For those of you that are keeping track, Mike played bass on our first album From Ashes and played a few shows locally with us in the early days. I’ve known Mike since our bands first played together with DEATH at the Whiskey in ’98 while I was still in high school. We became friends soon after and he even filled in on bass for my old band INHUMAN VISIONS back then. Recording my guitar tracks with him has been a true pleasure and his attention to detail is impeccable. Mike Cosio also started tracking bass with him recently and his know-how of the instrument has really helped Mike’s performance shine. Can’t wait to send everything to Erik Rutan to put the finishing touches on things. This will be the tightest and best ABYSMAL DAWN record yet!”

ABSYMAL DAWN Post New Demo Track

Los Angeles’ ABYSMAL DAWN have posted a demo of a new song on their MySpace page. The band, who are busy looking for a new drummer while working on the follow-up to 2008’s Programmed to Consume, commented on their decision to preview new material so early:

“We’re really excited about this new track along with the other material we’ve been working on. It doesn’t have any vocals or leads put to it yet though, just guitars with a drum machine for people to get the basic idea. We thought we’d give everyone a small taste of what’s to come and show people what we’re currently looking for in a drummer. Plenty of capable drummers have shown interest in auditioning but we’re looking for someone that can take us a step further and play these new songs. Until we find the right person we’ll keep writing the most brutal and misanthropic metal imaginable.”

The band will be playing a show at The Whisky in Hollywood with VEHEMENCE and RECIPROCAL on November 19th. Visit the band’s MySpace page to listen to the demo track and stay up-to-date on ABYSMAL DAWN news and tour information: http://www.myspace.com/abysmaldawn

ABYSMAL DAWN: Seek New Drummer; Begin Writing New Record

Los Angeles, CA’s blackened-death metal force ABYSMAL DAWN recently returned home after an insanely long North American tour with GOATWHORE, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, DAATH and SUCCESS WILL WRITE APOCALYPSE ACROSS THE SKY. Vocalist/guitarist Charles Elliott gave a recap on the tour, talks about the writing process for the next record, and announce drummer search:

“We’re back after a crazy 9 weeks on the road with GOATWHORE, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, DAATH and SUCCESS WILL WRITE APOCALYPSE ACROSS THE SKY! It was the longest tour we ever had the pleasure of being a part of and we had fucking blast! We played a lot of places that we’d either never had the pleasure of playing or hadn’t played since 2006, and we had a great time bringing the metal to you fuckers. We want to thank all the people that came out to the shows a tore shit up, drank with us, smoked with us, hung out with us, let us crash at their houses, or were just plan down to earth metal maniacs. You guys made it worth while!

“Unfortunately we were sharing backline on the tour with the other bands and both SWWAATS and ABIGAIL WILLIAMS had to go home early. That meant that we were without a drum kit for the rest of the tour, and in turn the last 8 shows were cancelled because promoters weren’t interested in a 1 band tour package. We want to apologize to anyone that was planning on coming those shows to see us and we promise we’ll be back soon!

“We are currently back at home and we’ve been busy continuing to write material for the follow up to ‘Programmed to Consume.’ We can tell you already by some of the demos that this is some of the fastest, most
technical, and yet still atmospheric stuff we’ve ever done. We hope to have a new album for you guys by next Summer at the latest so stay tuned for updates!

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thanks Ken Bedene of BLOOD OF CAIN who’s been filling in on drums for us for our last two tours. Our former drummer Terry Barajas left last April due to not being able to financially keep up with the harsh touring life style. He’s still a good friend of ours and we wish him the best of luck and thank him for helping to get the band to where it is today. We love you brother!

“We are currently auditioning drummers looking to join the band full time who is either in the Los Angeles area or willing to relocate. If you’re interested in trying out please e-mail [email protected] or send footage of you playing the songs ‘Walk the Path of Fire,’ ‘Programmed to Consume‘ and ‘Compulsory Resurrection‘ to the same e-mail address. We have scratch guitar and click tracks upon request. Until a suitable replacement is found Ken has agreed to play all our upcoming shows and even play on our next record if need be so we shouldn’t miss a step. Please only contact us if you’re willing to tour, put your heart and soul into this band, and aren’t just looking for a band to add to your résumé until something bigger comes along. We WILL kill you!”

ABYSMAL DAWN – Programmed to Consume

Back on the scene following their departure from the always suspicious Crash Music, ABYSMAL DAWN brings their own brand of melodic death metal to new heights with their formidable new album, Programmed to Consume. Consistent roadwork has paid off for the L.A. crew as the band steps it up considerably on the new album both in the performance and delivery department. Starting with the opening track all the way until closing skullcrusher “Walk the Path of Fire,” the band waste no time bringing the onslaught, attacking the songs with a greater sense of urgency then on their debut, From Ashes. Individual improvements and highlights can be found throughout the album. For example, drummer Terry Barajas delivering blast-beat ridden fury and intricate drum patterns on “Grotesque Modern Art,” “A Remission of Life,” “Cease to Comprehend” as well as most of the album. He showcases more complex performances than his work on the band’s debut. Frontman Charles Elliot also delivers more forceful, powerful vocals, growling in a lower register through most of the songs, but also unleashing a cryptic black metal rasp on the ominous “The Descent.” Meanwhile his guitar work is nicely complimented by, the now-departed, Jaimie Boulanger and the guitar tandem effectively trade off leads at will throughout the nine track audio journey. But while the band brings the shred in spades, fortunately they never get too far into SPIRAL ARCHITECT territory so as not to alienate the listener. One of ABYSMAL DAWN‘s biggest strengths has always been their ability to balance technical shreddery with memorable hooks and passages and the band continue on this successful path on Programmed to Consume. As many bands suffer from the dreaded “sophomore slump,” ABYSMAL DAWN‘s abilities and strengths continue to grow, and one can only continue to expect great things from this band. (Relapse Records)
