Greetings from the 2018 National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Convention AKA the NAMM Show, where things have been changed up a bit from years past. For starters, all the booths were in different locations, including some booths that were outside the normal convention center area. While there was still an insane amount of people, it felt a bit less crowded due to the new format and wider areas between booths. Let’s not delay any further and get to some of the products we particularly enjoyed!
Sonor displayed the beast of a kit, the SQ2 “The Book of Souls,” made specifically for Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN). Witnessing it up close and personal was truly astonishing. Crafted in Germany, the shells were made to Nicko’s specific specifications, complete with Eddie inlays. Beautiful stuff.
Paiste had a 90” giant gong on display. Yes, a 90” gong. Not sure how practical that would be, but that’s a whole lot of gong going on.
While not exactly metal related, some of you may remember the old Roland TR-808 or TR-909 drum machines, and now they have been officially reintroduced as virtual plug-ins. Note that you’ll have to use the Roland cloud, however, this is extremely cool and a great throwback for those nostalgic drum sounds. Continue reading →
Every year, NAMM bestows upon us shiny new toys for musicmakers of all genres to make new (and old) sounds with. NAMM 2012 was no less a musical heaven for the products, gadgets, and innovations that help make metal happen. We took a spin through the showroom floor at Anaheim Convention Center to check out some new equipment that our metal cohorts use and abuse. Full report after the jump. Continue reading →
MEGADETH founder and frontman Dave Mustaine has announced the return of original bassist David Ellefson (1983-2002) to the iconic multi-platinum group. This reunion is appropriately timed to MEGADETH’s upcoming historic month-long Rust in Peace 20th anniversary tour which launches March 1 in Spokane, WA. At these incredibly special shows, MEGADETH will play their landmark, genre-defining 1990 album Rust in Peace in its entirety, in addition to other MEGADETH favorites.
“This shows the power of brotherly love and forgiveness,” Mustaine says. “David Ellefson belongs in MEGADETH. Next we are going to show you the power of getting your asses kicked…HARD!”
David Ellefson concurs: “This is a huge moment for all of us, band and fans alike. It is a great celebration of the music from one of the biggest landmark albums of our career.”
Ellefson will join Mustaine and MEGADETH band members Shawn Drover (drums) and Chris Broderick (guitar) on tour in support of the group’s current CD Endgame.
“We’d like to thank James LoMenzo for several years of loyal service on the bass, and wish him the very best,” Mustaine adds.
As the world’s only true world (music) metal band, SOULFLY has been breaking down barriers and expanding the scope of metal since 1997. Band leader Max Cavalera‘s unique yet influential style has helped establish their own niche in the metal world incorporating tribal music of his native Brazil, reggae, dub, punk, thrash, and death metal. His pioneering efforts with SEPULTURA help put Brazil on the metal map, and in turn, has given him and SOULFLY the opportunity to bring their music to all parts of the world. APESHIT caught up with Max during SOULFLY‘s latest U.S. tour to learn more about his musical roots, connecting with fans, and his special art of guitar riffing.
SOULFLY bassist Bobby Burns will sit out the U.S. Dark Ages Tour with SOULFLY after suffering a stroke last Thursday. Although home at this time, Burns will need long rest for recovery.
The two bassists stepping up to the plate are metal veterans, Dave Ellefson (ex-MEGADETH, current F5/TEMPLE OF BRUTALITY) and Danny Lilker (ex-ANTHRAX/SOD/NUCLEAR ASSAULT, current BRUTAL TRUTH). Ellefson will be the bass player thru September 26th. After which, Lilker will be the bass player from September 27th thru the remainder of the tour.
