Song of the Day: DYING FETUS’ “Pissing in the Mainstream”

Eleven years ago, DYING FETUS released their best album by far, Destroy the Opposition. What a killer album! We highly recommend it.

Let us check out the song, “Pissing in the Mainstream.”

“The media is a tool designed to mold us into slaves
Drugging us into an empty, apathetic daze.
The trick is that we think that everything is going fine
But the truth to our reality lies buried in the mind

“I don’t give a fuck about the Hollywood elite;
I don’t really care if models can’t fucking eat.
I don’t give a fuck a fuck about which movie is on top.
But what I really know is that the shit has got to stop.

“Consumer appetites are never satisfied in full,
cause the objects that they buy can simply never fill the void.
A constant need for meaning, and accumulating shit,
drives the lust in their obsession just to get another fix.

“I don’t give a fuck about the TV ratings game,
The Real World is not a party, just a place for the insane.
If that reflects reality, then pass another drink
You try to be a millionaire, I’ll vomit in the sink.

“What the fuck is left to try,
on an avaricious nation on an economic high?
If Rome could last 500 years,
who then will throw the wrench inside our gears?

“The bottom line is money on the Western power scene,
where celebrities and porn can let the population dream.
They’re pathetic human living in an advertising glut,
who devour with a passion what the mainstream vomits up”

DYING FETUS – History Repeats…

Maryland based veterans DYING FETUS were heavily influenced by the underground death metal scene in the early 1990’s, so it’s quite fitting that the band pays homage to their influences on History Repeats…

FETUS has covered ground from the most popular bands in death metal, such as with CANNIBAL CORPSE’s “Born in a Casket” or NAPALM DEATH’s “Unchallenged Hate,” but they don’t forget about the underrated bands, either.

Their cover of BOLT THROWER’s “Unleashed Upon Mankind” might even sound better than the original, and the PESTILENCE cover of “Twisted Truth” is up to par as well. Some bands deserved more credit than they received, such as BROKEN HOPE, and FETUS’ rendition of “Gorehog” is brutal and sounds extremely close to the original. The band also covers an obscure but heavily underrated slam/groove/death metal band from New York, called DEHUMANIZED, and they nail “Fade Into Obscurity” to a T. Throw in “Rohypnol,” an original DYING FETUS track exclusive to this EP, and you’ve got yourself another worthy release from this hard working trio.

While some bands try to experiment or change the original songs too much, things can get a bit blurry, but DYING FETUS sticks to the originals as closely as possible. It’s a treat for old school death metal fans to hear these classic tracks updated in DYING FETUS fashion, and at the same time gives the younger generation a feel for how great these original songs were. MISERY INDEX – Heirs to Thievery

As one of the hardest working bands in the metal scene, Maryland’s MISERY INDEX grind out a new album with Heirs to Thievery. Vocalist Jason Netherton’s lyrics have stayed true with his political views and makes the listener actually expand their mind by using their brain to think.

Musically, the band expands on their last output, Traitors, and most of the songs on Heirs to Thievery stay short and sweet, mostly within the 2-3 minute range. This is 35 minutes of in your face, loud, brutal attack on your auditory senses. Tracks like “Embracing Extinction” and the title track tease you with a melodic lick, catchy riff, then the drums and vocals pummel the listener like a ton of bricks. “The Carrion Call” and “Plague of Objects” include some great riffs, double bass, and breaks, but the true highlights are the tracks with some very special guests.

HATE ETERNAL mastermind Erik Rutan lends some backup vocals on “The Illuminaught,” and MISERY INDEX continues their incestuous relationship with DYING FETUS by having current FETUS guitarist/growler John Gallagher do backups on “Sleeping Giants,” and ex-DYING FETUS vocalist Vince Matthews on “You Lose.” The album ends quickly and powerfully with “Day of the Dead,” which is a satisfying end and should prompt the listener to hit play again.

Netherton was always the backbone of the political stance in DYING FETUS, and he continues to write actual lyrics that aren’t just filler. While DYING FETUS continues the one dimensional SUFFOCATION inspired slam riff style, MISERY INDEX have evolved past that with a sound of their own. The chemistry of guitarist Sparky Voyles and drummer Adam Jarvis mesh well, and once again MISERY INDEX deliver a punishing and memorable album. (Relapse Records)

CEPHALIC CARNAGE were recently robbed while on tour with DYING FETUS in Tulsa, OK. Here’s a statement from the band:

“While CEPHALIC CARNAGE were getting their van repaired in Tulsa, OK on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, we were robbed.

“A backpack containing the recent earnings from the tour (close to $4000.00), a laptop computer with over $2000.00 in music software programs loaded, an iPod and various personal items were among the items stolen. We immediately called the police and suspected that an employee grabbed the backpack in the process of getting the work done.

“The police came and took a written statement. The authorities suspected that it was an inside job as well but could not prove anything at that point. It is still under investigation but as of yet they still have not recovered the property or money.

“This could not have come as at a worst time as we were looking to use earnings from this tour to help cover the upcoming holiday expenses for our kids and families. As you might expect we are extremely upset as this tour was doing very well for us (both financially and morale wise).

“Despite this major setback the band is still continuing on with the DYING FETUS tour until the end. Our hopes are that we will be able to break even on this tour and not have to reach into our pockets to cover travel expenses, merch costs etc. We are looking for any type of assistance from our fans to help us through this difficult scenario.

“Any donation of any amount will be absolutely appreciated. If you cannot do anything at this time then please try to make it out to our remaining shows on this tour and support us that way.

“In spite of everything we are having a great time with DYING FETUS and the crowd support and response that we have been getting on each and every show has been astounding.”
