Vocalist Howard Jones Leaves KILLSWITCH ENGAGE

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE has announced the departure of longtime vocalist Howard Jones.  Here is the band’s official statement:

“To our family, friends and fans: We have decided to continue on without Howard Jones as the singer of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE.  We love Howard and are thankful for the nine years that we’ve had him in the band.  Out of respect for everyone involved we will not be discussing the specific reasons behind this decision. Howard is a part of our family and always will be, and we wish him well. He has left big shoes to fill, so we certainly have our work cut out for us to find the next singer of KILLSWITCH, something we plan on making priority #1 going forward.  Most importantly, thanks to all of you for all the support throughout the years and for sticking by us for all this time.  We really do appreciate it and we very much look forward to having a new record for all of you in the not too distant future that we can all be proud of.  Sincerely, Adam, Joel, Mike & Justin.”

Mikael Stanne (vocals) further comments: “Greetings from Atlanta, Georgia. Four days into the tour and finally jetlag has subsided. We are now operating on local time and it feels great. The shows have been awesome so far. We have loved performing every night and the new songs that we have pulled out have gone over really well. We can’t wait for the album to come out so that we can start doing more of the new stuff that we are very proud of.

“The new video for ‘Shadow in our Blood’ was shot by Vasara Films, who also filmed and edited our live DVD, and once again did an excellent job. The clip is all about inevitability, the inability to alter the course of your life. I think they captured the fear and frustration really well and it turned out to be quite a scary video. The filming of it was even scarier though. I flew to Finland in the dead of winter not knowing what I was in for. Hours later I found myself strapped to an off-road motorcycle in the freezing cold being driven further and further into the woods. It was one of the most surreal days of my life. All I could see from my position was the sky, snow and a few Finnish faces from time to time and all I could hear were people talking in a strange language and the song over and over again. The things you do for the art. Check it out and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I loathed making it.”

The band is currently on tour with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE – Killswitch Engage

It’s hard to believe that nine years have passed since KILLSWITCH ENGAGE‘s debut release in 2000. The years have surely been kind to the band as their new self-titled album is their most sophisticated work to date. While the “metalcore” tag will probably always be associated with the band, Killswitch Engage contains only a minimal amount of the “core” aspect of their roots. The album is a sleek and skilled metal beast. Guitarists, Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel, are proven top-notch guitarists with their unrelenting melodics and fast technical skills. They frequently channel the spirit and sound of IN FLAMESJesper Stromblad and SOILWORK‘s Peter Wichers. It’s no secret that KILLSWITCH ENGAGE are big fans of the aforementioned bands. However, one thing the band have that their Swedish heroes do not possess is a vocalist who can sing as well as Howard Jones. On this album, Jones continues to belt out the memorable vocal lines with plenty of range, skill, and soul. Speaking of the aforementioned characteristic, KILLSWITCH show progressive growth in their ability to express the emotional aspect of their expression via a bigger musical vocabulary. There are more than enough stand out tracks on Killswitch Engage to impress any critic and satisfy any fan. Some of them include “Never Again,” “Starting Over,” and “Take Me Away.” While the album fizzles out a bit in the end, it’s still a high quality KILLSWITCH ENGAGE album that has plenty to offer. KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, whose self-titled album Killswitch Engage debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 chart earlier this summer, are headed out on the road once again.

Fresh off a summer trek as one of the main stage attractions of the second annual Rock Star Energy Mayhem Fest, KSE will take the show on the road for a headline trek across the US, which is their first for this album. The tour will begin on February 4 in their home state of Massachusetts and will cover significant ground across the country for seven weeks. To keep things interesting, KSE have elected to play smaller venues in a handful of cities in order to create a more intimate setting for their fans.

Joining KILLSWITCH as main support will be Dayton, OH’s THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, who released their latest album With Roots Above and Branches Below via Ferret Music back in May 2009 and immediately followed with a hugely successful stint on last summer’s Warped Tour, resulting in a fanbase that has since grown exponentially. Also joining KILLSWITCH on this run will be highly influential metal act DARK TRANQUILLITY, who hail from Gothenburg, Sweden. DARK TRANQUILLITY are set to release their anticipated new album We Are the Void through Century Media in March 2010.

In other KSE news, the song “The End of Heartache,” the title track from their 2004, Gold-certified release, will appear on Guitar Hero: Van Halen alongside tracks from acts like FOO FIGHTERS, WEEZER, JUDAS PRIEST and THE CLASH, among others.

KSE guitarist Adam D. weighed in on the tour saying, “We are stoked to come back to the US and shred with THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and DARK TRANQUILLITY. It’s been a while since we’ve headlined the States and we’re excited to play some new tunes for y’all. This tour is going to be wicked sweet!”

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE’s New Album to be Titled Killswitch Engage (Again)

Massachusetts’ KILLSWITCH ENGAGE have announced the title for their eagerly anticipated fifth album. The title is Killswitch Engage, which also happens to be the title of their first album.

Singer Howard Jones commented on the album: “It was time for us to step outside of our comfort zone and try something a little different with this record. It definitely still sounds like us, but we needed to be refreshed and take things a little further. When we all couldn’t agree on an album title, someone suggested we just keep it self-titled and we all pretty much agreed…gives it the feeling of a fresh new beginning.”

The album, produced by Brendan O’Brien (AC/DC, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE) and co-produced by guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, will hit stores on June 30 via Roadrunner Records. Some of the working track titles for the album include “Reckoning,” “The Forgotten,” “Light in a Darkened World” and “Starting Over.”

The band were recently added to the second annual Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival. Read more about that here: http://www.apeshit.org/news/killswitch-engage-added-to-this-year%E2%80%99s-rockstar-energy-drink-mayhem-festival/

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE Added to This Year’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, who recently put the finishing touches on their yet-to-be-titled new album, have been officially added to this year’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival‘s main stage.  The main stage bill will be topped by MARILYN MANSON and SLAYER, and features fellow main stage act, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival kicks off July 10th in Sacramento, CA and will hit 26 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada.  Tickets will be available on Friday, April 10 at www.mayhemfest.com via a limited-time pre-sale. Pre-sale tickets will feature a custom-made limited-edition design, and will allow fans to enter the venue early. In addition, all pre-sale ticket buyers will be entered to win an exclusive Mayhem Fest drumkit from Tama drums. Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning April 24. For specific on sale dates and additional ticketing information, visit www.livenation.com.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE‘s singer, Howard Jones, commented on the festival: “There are so many great bands on this tour. Being able to share the stage with BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, SLAYER and MARILYN MANSON will make for a good time for everyone within earshot—and eyesight—of the stage. See you there—and drink plenty of water because you will sweat…a lot. It’s gonna be a crazy summer.”

The Jägermeister stage will feature TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, and the Jägermeister Battle of the Bands winner.  The Hot Topic stage will feature extreme metal bands CANNIBAL CORPSE, JOB FOR A COWBOY, BEHEMOTH, BLACK DAHLIA MURDER and WHITECHAPEL. The World’s Greatest Freestyle Motocross team METAL MULISHA will also be revving up the crowd with their unique style of death-defying motorcycle stunts on all dates.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE‘s follow-up to 2006’s gold-certified album, As Daylight Dies, recently wrapped up production and will be released sometime this year.  The album was produced by Brendan O’Brien (MASTODON, PEARL JAM, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE).

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE Announce Recording of New Album

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE are proud to announce the recording of their as-yet untitled fourth album for Roadrunner Records. The album will follow 2006’s As Daylight Dies, which is approaching Gold-status. 2004’s The End of Heartache has achieved Gold certification.

For the first time in their career, the band will work with an outside producer and have chosen Brendan O’Brien (AC/DC) to man the boards. KILLSWITCH ENGAGE guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, a noted producer in his own right who has recorded all of the band’s previous albums, will be taking a co-producer role on this record alongside O’Brien.

The band will record in both Georgia and their native Western Massachusetts. Roadrunner expects to release the record in Spring 2009.

The band will spend the winter recording the album and will hit the road in the Spring for a major pre-release tour. Look for more details on that in the near future.

As Daylight Dies marks the return of metalcore juggernaut KILLSWITCH ENGAGE whose breakthrough album, The End of Heartache, solidified the band as one of the genres most successful acts. Album two for the KILLSWITCHHAS BEEN SHED line-up sees the band taking the lessons learned from their two year roadtrip in to the studio with guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz‘s production know how to deliver yet another solid, albeit unremarkable album. “This is Absolution,” “The Arms of Sorrow” and “My Curse” all deliver mildly catchy hooks, but lack the power and conviction of songs such as “When Darkness Falls,” “Rose of Sharyn” or even the title track of the band’s previous album. What we have on As Daylight Dies is a band revisiting familiar ideas from their previous album, to bring listeners material that is immediately similar, but lacking in the delivery department. This results in songs that while catchy are also somewhat bland at the same time. When the band experiments, it does so sparingly as on “For You” which starts off with a busy rhythm pattern similar to singer Howard Jones and drummer Justin Foley‘s work with BLOOD HAS BEEN SHED before quickly returning to more familiar, standard riffing that the band has become known for. When the band arrives at the melodic bridge, what could have been an exciting highlight is quickly shortened and cut off in favor of safer, more predictable territory. Oddly enough, the most adventurous material on As Daylight Dies occurs at the end, with the last two tracks, “Desperate Times” and “Reject Yourself,” both offering up the most developed mature work on the album. “Desperate Times” shifts from ethereal to heavy effortlessly while “Reject Yourself” alternates between blast beat fury and melodic clean sections creating a strong balance of dynamics. As Daylight Dies is by no means a bad album, but considering its importance at this stage in the band’s career, it’s somewhat disappointing. When you take in the fact that, for most of the line-up, this is their sixth album as well as the band member’s impressive resumes, one can’t help but feel a little short-changed. Bottom line, if you have The End of Heartache you don’t really need As Daylight Dies as two killer songs are hardly worth the price of admission, but diehard KSE fans easily impressed by more of the same will probably eat this shit up.
