APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2013

carcass.surgicalsteelOnce again, another fruitful year in extreme music draws to a close.  We saw some long awaited comebacks by legends, three quarters of the original SABBATH line up, VOIVOD and CARCASS.  The godfathers of U.S. death metal had a healthy year with strong releases by SUFFOCATION, DEICIDE, and IMMOLATION.  We also saw young superstars, GHOST B.C. and KVELERTAK, release good sophomore albums.  Perhaps the most polarizing and criticized album is SATYRICON‘s self-titled album, which was roasted by the majority of the media and fans.

Among the mountains of releases, there is one album that we’ll gush about again and again, and that’s CARCASS‘ comeback album, Surgical Steel.  There are always good and interesting albums coming out all the time, and then there are the untouchable albums that only the legendary bands could create.  Surgical Steel scorches everything in its path and clearly shows that in the pantheon of active bands, they are at the top.

DOOMRIDERS Forced to Drop Off KYLESA Tour Due to Scheduling Conflicts

Boston’s DOOMRIDERS have been forced to drop off the upcoming KYLESA tour due to guitarist Nate Newton‘s commitment with CONVERGE. The band posted the following message apologizing for the cancellation:

“We’ve gotten a lot of messages regarding our dropping off of the KYLESA tour and yes…unfortuately the news is true. Due to scheduling issues between DOOMRIDERS and Nate‘s other band CONVERGE we had to pull out of the tour. Our deepest apologies go out to our friends in KYLESA, and also to anyone who had planned on coming to see us play on the tour. We love KYLESA, and we love our brothers in SAVIOURS, who have taken our spot on the tour and encourage everyone to go to these shows and have a blast!! Its going to be a great tour and we’re all very sad that we won’t be a part of it.

“We will hopefully be announcing some exciting tour plans for later in the year very soon. We’re sorry everyone! We’ll see you next time!!”

KYLESA Offers Update, Plan on Writing New Material

Savannah sludge-rockers KYLESA have offered an update on the band from home:

“We’re happy to announce that our video for ‘Hollow Severer’ will be airing on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball very soon,” guitarist/singer Laura Pleasants says. “You can view it now on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGFru8yyYIw). When viewed on Headbanger’s Ball in the context of other heavy music videos, I think that our video will offer something a little different than the average live footage video. The depiction of the narration is abstracted and literal with the use of simple claymation and an overall raw energy is captured by David and Allie of My Good Eye . They were great and easy to work with and we hope to work with them again in the future.

“In general news, we’ve toured pretty heavily the past few months supporting our latest release, Time Will Fuse its Worth, and everything went rather well. We’ve got a few shows starting today with awesome bands (TORCHE, MADE OUT OF BABIES and MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT), but we plan on taking some time off to write new material as we have a few projects coming up. Fun, creative projects, so stay in touch and we’ll keep you updated.”

Tour dates:
7/19 Orlando, FL – The Social
7/20 Tampa, FL – Transitions Art Gallery @ Skatepark of Tampa
7/21 Savannah, GA – Jinx (no MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT)

YAKUZA Offers In-Studio Update, New Video Footage

Chicago’s YAKUZA has offered an update from the studio online (http://www.prostheticrecords.com/yakuza-instudio.html), in addition to posting some new video footage on the band’s MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/yakuza) featuring the video for “Chicago Typewriter,” as well as live footage.

“Alright, got the drums done over at Electrical Audio – the home of Steve Albini in Chicago,” frontman Bruce Lamont said. “Now we have moved into Volume Recording / Semaphore Studios for the duration of the recording for Transmutations. Sanford [Parker, producer] (MINSK, PELICAN, RWAKE) is killin it. Keep you posted.”

YAKUZA began demoing new material in the band’s hometown at Semifour Studios for Transmutations on Feb. 28 and is scheduled for a late 2007 release through Prosthetic Records. Transmutations will be the follow-up to last year’s critically-acclaimed Samsara, and the band will continue previewing new material live with GENGHIS TRON and labelmates KYLESA as well as supporting GOATWHORE. Frontman / saxophonist Bruce Lamont will also make appearances on March 15 for a SxSw showcase at room 710 at 8 pm in Austin, TX and will follow that up with a March 16 appearance at the Furniture Records showcase.

YAKUZA on tour:
4/08 Chicago, IL – Beat Kitchen (with GENGHIS TRON, KYLESA)
4/20 Milwaukee, WI – Vnuk’s (with GOATWHORE)

YAKUZA Begins Tracking New Material

Chicago’s YAKUZA have begun demoing new material in the band’s hometown at Semifour Studios for the band’s forthcoming new album, tentatively titled Transmutations and scheduled for a late 2007 release through Prosthetic Records. Sanford Parker (PELICAN, MINSK, RWAKE), who made a guest appearance on the band’s last release, Samsara, will be handling production duties when the band begins recording Feb. 28.

“This time it’s all about variety, each song has its own personality with the album covering a much broader spectrum,” frontman Bruce Lamont said. “The extremes are really drastic: super schizoid-brutal to almost reflective and minimal. Just like with Samsara, we’re looking at this album as a whole. I don’t want to say the album will be an ‘experience’ per-se because that sounds too hippie-ish, but it’s gonna be one of those things that you have to listen to start to finish.”

YAKUZA has been also been added to the Chicago date of the upcoming tour featuring GENGHIS TRON and labelmates, KYLESA, at the Beat Kitchen and the band will be previewing new material at the show.

Show date:
4/08 Chicago, IL – Beat Kitchen (with GENGHIS TRON, KYLESA)
