National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) 2018 Show Report

Greetings from the 2018 National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Convention AKA the NAMM Show, where things have been changed up a bit from years past. For starters, all the booths were in different locations, including some booths that were outside the normal convention center area. While there was still an insane amount of people, it felt a bit less crowded due to the new format and wider areas between booths. Let’s not delay any further and get to some of the products we particularly enjoyed!

Sonor displayed the beast of a kit, the SQ2 “The Book of Souls,” made specifically for Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN). Witnessing it up close and personal was truly astonishing. Crafted in Germany, the shells were made to Nicko’s specific specifications, complete with Eddie inlays. Beautiful stuff.

Paiste had a 90” giant gong on display. Yes, a 90” gong. Not sure how practical that would be, but that’s a whole lot of gong going on.

While not exactly metal related, some of you may remember the old Roland TR-808 or TR-909 drum machines, and now they have been officially reintroduced as virtual plug-ins. Note that you’ll have to use the Roland cloud, however, this is extremely cool and a great throwback for those nostalgic drum sounds.

New Grind from MISERY INDEX Coming Your Way May 2014

Under appreciated death/grind extremists MISERY INDEX have announced The Killing Gods as the title of their forthcoming new full-length. The band’s fifth studio album will hit the stores on May 23rd (May 27th in North America).

Frontman Jason Netherton issued the following update: “After an extended writing and recording process we have finally completed ‘The Killing Gods’. It is the longest, most diverse and most complete album we have ever created, and it represents the blood, sweat and beers of four dudes trying to make the best songs they can. We think we have succeeded and we hope you do as well. Look for this metal beast to drop in May!”

The Killing Gods was recorded at Wright Way Studios in Baltimore, MD and engineered by Steve Carr (DYING FETUS, SLIPKNOT, SOILWORK). The drum parts were tracked with Scott Hull (PIG DESTROYER, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED) at Visceral Sound in Bethesda, MD.

The band recently announced a special live date as part of this year’s Maryland Death Fest pre-show, on May 21.

MISERY INDEX – Heirs to Thievery

As one of the hardest working bands in the metal scene, Maryland’s MISERY INDEX grind out a new album with Heirs to Thievery. Vocalist Jason Netherton’s lyrics have stayed true with his political views and makes the listener actually expand their mind by using their brain to think.

Musically, the band expands on their last output, Traitors, and most of the songs on Heirs to Thievery stay short and sweet, mostly within the 2-3 minute range. This is 35 minutes of in your face, loud, brutal attack on your auditory senses. Tracks like “Embracing Extinction” and the title track tease you with a melodic lick, catchy riff, then the drums and vocals pummel the listener like a ton of bricks. “The Carrion Call” and “Plague of Objects” include some great riffs, double bass, and breaks, but the true highlights are the tracks with some very special guests.

HATE ETERNAL mastermind Erik Rutan lends some backup vocals on “The Illuminaught,” and MISERY INDEX continues their incestuous relationship with DYING FETUS by having current FETUS guitarist/growler John Gallagher do backups on “Sleeping Giants,” and ex-DYING FETUS vocalist Vince Matthews on “You Lose.” The album ends quickly and powerfully with “Day of the Dead,” which is a satisfying end and should prompt the listener to hit play again.

Netherton was always the backbone of the political stance in DYING FETUS, and he continues to write actual lyrics that aren’t just filler. While DYING FETUS continues the one dimensional SUFFOCATION inspired slam riff style, MISERY INDEX have evolved past that with a sound of their own. The chemistry of guitarist Sparky Voyles and drummer Adam Jarvis mesh well, and once again MISERY INDEX deliver a punishing and memorable album. (Relapse Records)

APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2008

We finally got off our asses and did it.  It’s already the year 2009, but we’ve complied a list of our top albums of 2008.  Compiling such a list is never easy, and 2008 was no exception.  Maybe it was a lack of albums that really stood out, or maybe we just weren’t paying enough attention.  Regardless, we took a quick look back on the metal albums we felt were notable in 2008.
