Goodbye, SABBATH. We Love You

The inevitable finally happened on February 4, 2017.  BLACK SABBATH played their final show at Genting Arena in their hometown of Birmingham.  Here is official footage of the final song, “Paranoid.”

As expected, the setlist for the show was essentially the same set they’ve been performing since the reunion with Ozzy for the second Ozzfest.  Here are some other clips:

Sadly, we never got to see Bill Ward participate in this final leg of the tour (or the reunion for that matter).  But then again, maybe it’s for the best.

Thank you for everything, SABBATH.  None of us would be here without you.  We can’t wait to see the new projects from each individual member!  And who knows, they may reunite again.  This is rock ‘n roll after all.

Concert Memories: BLACK SABBATH, OZZY OSBOURNE, PANTERA, TYPE O NEGATIVE, MARILYN MANSON @ Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion, June 29, 1997, San Bernardino, California

Ozzfest 1997Back when I was a senior in high school, a friend called me up and was yelling at the top of his lungs about an “Ozzfest.”  When he told me about the dream line up, I was beyond excited.  Who on this earth wouldn’t have wanted to see OZZY, DANZIG, SLAYER, SEPULTURA, and FEAR FACTORY in 1996?  Unfortunately, my friend didn’t care enough to actually go with me to the show and I was the only person in my school that cared enough to go.  Thus, I missed the show.

So 1997 rolls around and I’m a freshman in college and working as a school teacher during the summer.  Most importantly, I had my own damn car.  When the announcement for the second Ozzfest came out, I was beyond excited.  To be able to see the reunited original line up of BLACK SABBATH meant everything to me.  SABBATH were my favorite band at the time (and still are).  Those first six albums changed my life.  Not even Technical Ecstacy or Never Say Die hurt my feelings as much as Load but that probably has more to do with the fact that I was born in ’78 and not ’68.  I still have those first SABBATH albums on cassette tape.

Unlike 1996, I wasn’t going to be deterred by the fact that I did not know a single soul who wanted to go.  Armed with a Thomas Guide map, I set out in my car on the furthest drive of my 19 year old life.  After the over two hour drive, I arrived at the venue, which is out in the middle of shitsville (AKA San Bernardino County, California).  Lots of dirt, rocks, scorching heat, and rednecks.  As I pulled up to entrance of the venue, there were the obligatory Christian groups protesting the show with a focus on Ozzy.  They were holding up signs about damnation and devil worship…completely harmless stuff.

CONVERGE: A Conversation with CONVERGE

In 2009, Boston’s CONVERGE unleashed, Axe to Fall, an album equalling, if not topping, their acclaimed Jane Doe album, managing to titillate those with even the highest of expectations. Staying true to their style, the band bare their souls in a most caustic mix of hardcore and metal that resonates with sheer heart and honesty.

CONVERGE recently whipped through North America on an unusually larger (sponsored) tour with DETHKLOK, MASTODON, and HIGH ON FIRE. This was a unique opportunity for the band to showcase their powerful and unceremoniously raw live performance to a younger and more diverse audience.

APESHIT caught up with vocalist Jake Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou during their Los Angeles stop to chat about the tour, the new album, and what makes CONVERGE, CONVERGE.

Finnish rock band, LORDI, have set October 28th for the release of their forthcoming new album via The End Records.  The as-yet-untitled follow-up to The Arockalypse will showcase the band’s trademark melodic hard rock sound.

LORDI spent 2007 on the mainstage of Ozzfest and then opened up for TYPE O NEGATIVE.  The mega-successful The Arockalypse has sold 350,000 units to date and was certified gold in Sweden and Germany–not to mention attaining triple platinum status in Finland.

CHTHONIC: “UNlimited New York” Concert; European Tour

Taiwanese extreme metal band CHTHONIC, who recently wrapped up a successful appearance on Ozzfest, are currently trekking across the US on their historic “UNlimited” tour, performing their first headlining concerts in America.

Ozzfest has been a great experience for CHTHONIC, but we’re excited to perform for our fans for longer than 20 minutes,” says vocalist Freddy Lim.

In concert, CHTHONIC (pronounced “THON-ick”) will continue to perform the tour’s theme song, “UNlimited Taiwan,” written and recorded this spring “to emphasize the ‘UNlimited’ potential of Taiwan and the Taiwanese people,” Lim says. Like the tour — which kicked off in Taipei earlier this summer following the international re-release of 2002’s Relentless Recurrence and last year’s A Decade On The Throne two-CD/DVD live set — the song was named to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan’s full participation as an independent country. The Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune, among others, have recently devoted lengthy features to the message behind the tour.

With a new session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled to open in New York on Sept. 18, many pro-Taiwan rallies will be held around the city in the days beforehand. To coincide with the UN session’s kickoff — where Taiwan will once again petition to be formally recognized as an independent country, and not a Chinese province — CHTHONIC will hold a special “UNlimited New York” concert at Manhattan’s Highline Ballroom, located less than three miles from the UN, on Sept. 16. Tickets are currently available on the venue’s website,, and at their box office.

Because this is the group’s third New York City concert in recent weeks, coming on the heels of an Aug. 21 performance with NILE and a Sept. 6 concert alongside KATATONIA, CHTHONIC has arranged for the Highline Ballroom to offer tickets for only $5 to anyone who redeems a ticket stub from one of their previous shows at the venue’s box office. For everyone else, a $2 discount can be obtained by purchasing the tickets online at (enter “un4taiwan” in the access code field). Furthermore, the first 100 fans in the doors will receive a free set of CHTHONIC “paper dolls,” which are sold in toy stores throughout Asia. (A photo can be seen here.)

The “UNlimited New York” concert will be videotaped, and CHTHONIC hopes that people of all nationalities will join them in this historic plea for freedom and independence.

JOB FOR A COWBOY, BEHEMOTH to Co-Headline “Radio Rebellion” Tour

Glendale, AZ’s extreme metal unit JOB FOR A COWBOY and Polish death metal troupe BEHEMOTH will be co-headlining this year’s “Radio Rebellion” tour, presented by Hurley and Converse. The twenty-eight city North American trek will also feature highly regarded French band GOJIRA and Canadian technical death metal quartet BENEATH THE MASSACRE.

Ozzfest breakthrough artists BEHEMOTH are extremely proud to be a part of the “Radio Rebellion” tour, which is the perfect follow up to their highly successful summer run. The tour affords the band the opportunity to perform a longer set in more intimate settings, ultimately providing fans with “the definitive BEHEMOTH experience”. This is also a chance for the band to perform an array of songs from their highly acclaimed new offering, The Apostasy, which debuted at #149 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

“We’ve toured U.S. ten times during last few years but we almost never had a chance to headline our own shows,” BEHEMOTH main man Nergal states. “These last few years have been about working our asses off in order to establish our name and build a solid foundation, and now it will finally pay off. It’s high time for us to come back to North America and show our fans what a BEHEMOTH set with full production can be. I love all the bands that are joining us as there is a lot of quality and variety on the bill. I’m thrilled to tour with GOJIRA and JOB FOR A COWBOY is phenomenal! Extremely talented band. I can’t think of a better company for us. We’re bringing all our lights, a full stage production, and will be delivering at least an hour long set. We’ll be playing old stuff as well as songs from The Apostasy. The Radio Rebellion tour is going to be massive! See you there my friends!”

On the topic of the tour, JOB FOR A COWBOY founding member Ravi Bhadriraju comments, “To be a part of a tour along side some of the best acts from around the world is awesome. BEHEMOTH, GOJIRA and BENEATH THE MASSACRE are all from different countries and are all amazing bands. This will be the heaviest tour of the fall! We’re excited and ready to hit the road yet again. All of you JOB FOR A COWBOY fans can expect a show that will be worth your while. Look out!”

In addition to Hurley and Converse, “Radio Rebellion” 2007 tour sponsors include Revolver Magazine, Smartpunk, Metal Blade Records, Ferret Music and Prosthetic Records. “Radio Rebellion” Co-Founder Stewart Teggart comments, “We are very excited to launch this year’s ‘Rebellion Tour‘. It will be ‘Radio Rebellion‘ in the truest sense as we’ve assembled four of the most extreme bands in heavy metal. Each band on the tour this year hail from a different country and all of them have their own unique way of delivering brutally heavy music. If you are a fan of Metal, this tour is not to be missed! Radio Rebellion will be the microphone for the youth by delivering what the fans want to see and hear which is why sponsors with a similar frame of mind have been chosen to help support the tour.”

MONDO GENERATOR Forced to Drop Off Ozzfest 2007

MONDO GENERATOR has been forced to drop off this year’s Ozzfest due to matters beyond the band’s control. A statement from band frontman Nick Oliveri reads as follows:

“It’s very disappointing but MONDO GENERATOR has been forced to cancel the remaining dates we have booked with Ozzfest and CIRCUS DIABLO. We tried everything in our power to make things work so that we could remain on tour, but unfortunately due to matters out of my control, it is impossible for us to continue touring at this time,” says Oliveri. “We’re very sorry to all the fans that will not be able to see us on these remaining dates and promise that we will be back soon. We would like to thank Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, as well as the entire Ozzfest crew for giving us the chance to play Ozzfest 2007. We’d also like to thank the fans that came out to show their support at the shows.”

MONDO GENERATOR’s new album Dead Planet was recently released through Suburban Noize Records.
