MASTERS OF REALITY: Self Titled Album and How High the Moon 2-on-1 Reissue Coming

Delicious Vinyl is proud to announce the reissue of two seminal albums from MASTERS OF REALITY together in one deluxe package on December 11th, 2012.  Originally released in 1989 on Rick Rubin‘s Def American label, the self-titled album is being re-released together with the 1997 live album How High The Moon: Live At The Viper Room in 2CD Digipak and Double LP formats.

Fans of KYUSS and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE should recognize the name Chris Goss. As godfather of the California desert rock scene that blossomed in Joshua Tree, Goss produced three thundering KYUSS LPs as well as QOTSA’s breakthrough album Rated R and their Grammy-nominated Era Vulgaris. The Masters’ legend has grown stronger ever since.

Completists and come-latelys may want to know this reissue maintains the self-titled album’s track sequencing from the Delicious Vinyl version, which includes the song “Doraldina’s Prophecies” (produced by Chris Goss, Matt Dike & Mike Ross) not found on the Rick Rubin-produced Def American release. The original Def American cover art has been restored. Longtime friend of the band and current MASTERS OF REALITY drummer John Leamy‘s painting “The Blue Garden” is seen in its full glory on the 8-panel digipak (as well as the bonus poster). The song “Magical Spell” is returned here to its majestic five minute lascivious trawl, missing verse, guitar solo and all.  As for the second disc, How High the Moon: Live at the Viper Room has been out of print for years, and never been available on vinyl.  Its standouts include “Jindalee Jindalie” (featuring special guest Scott Weiland) and a romp through “John Brown” that betters the already awesome studio version.

Nick Oliveri to Release Solo Album, Death Acoustic, in October

Nick Oliveri, the musician best known for his former role as the bassist in QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and KYUSS, is set to release his first solo album under his own name. The album titled, Death Acoustic, was recorded over the last 12 months in his home studio, and is scheduled for an October 6th release through Impedance and MVD Audio. The also frontman of MONDO GENERATOR and part-time member of THE DWARVES, Oliveri has songwriting and musicianship through intimate, solo acoustic shows. Death Acoustic captures that side of the rocker.

APESHIT’s Top Metal Albums of 2007

It’s been a grossly successful 2007 for APESHIT, and though we find it hard pressed to make that same general claim for metal in 2007, a handful of albums did manage to leave a strong impression on us. Retox is far better and more solid than their recent efforts. Finally, fans have been given an album that comes as close to their zenith, Apocalypse Dudes, as the band can get. Retox is also prime party music. [Read our full review]

4. MAYHEM Ordo Ad Chao

Just when you thought Norwegian black metal had grown too safe, accessible, and popular, MAYHEM makes an essential album that crushes all. Ordo Ad Chao is a powerful statement of true Norwegian black metal the way it used to be: pure, dark, raw, and evil. [Read our full review]

5. SHINING V: Halmstad

SHINING are one of the best underground Swedish death/black bands that many underground fans have yet to hear. Great riffs, flow, balance and strong vocal presence from band leader and raging maniac, Niclas Kvarforth. V: Halmstad is some of the best (Swedish) metal not coming from Gothenburg. 6. DIR EN GREYThe Marrow of a Bone

Though most of their U.S. fans are teenage girls with Japanese pop culture fever, don’t let that subtract and detract from this quality album. The Marrow of a Bone is ugly, dark, and has the right balance of hooks and brutality that has allowed it to be another worldwide hit for the band. [Read our full review]

7. WATAIN Sworn to the Dark

To steal a thought from shady rajah: This is the album that DISSECTION should’ve written as their final album. WATAIN keep the flame of classic Swedish black/death metal burning with no peers in sight. [Read our full review]

8. PRIMORDIAL To the Nameless Dead

Ireland’s premier metal band, PRIMORDIAL, have written yet another excellent album of folk/black metal that is so much grander, powerful, and spirited than so much else out there. [Read our full review]

9. MELECHESH Emissaries

If you haven’t heard this band or this album, you are missing out on a lot. There’s nothing like MELECHESH‘s Mesopotamian metal and Emissaries is easily their best album. Norway’s premier black metal(ish) super group, DIMMU BORGIR delivered yet another powerful entry in their already considerable catalog, with a driving guitar heavy album that was catchy as it was complex. Having Hellhammer on board didn’t hurt either, as Jan Axel carved layer of intricate drum patterns to enhance the band’s already ambitious anti-Christian concept album. 7. ABORTEDSlaughter and Apparatus: A Methodical Overture

Sven De Caluwe may have lost all his original members, but nothing detered the growling machine. He simply assembled a new death squad and delivered another precise, surgical slaughter of bludgeoning death metal. Relentless and furious yet containing some of the catchiest songs about mutilation written in recent memory, Slaughter and Apparatus continues the band’s excellent carnage. [Read our full review]

8. MACHINE HEADThe Blackening

After dabbling in bland nu-metal for a spell, MACHINE HEAD came roaring back with their return to form, Through Ashes of Empires. But that was just the warm up. The Blackening is the main course, with the band firing on all levels, encompassing MACHINE HEAD‘s most challenging work to date. 1. HIM Venus Doom

These Finns have always been top-notch songwriters, and they succeed again while under the delicious influence of doom. Ville Valo‘s singing and songwriting don’t miss a step, and the band sound at home with the heavier vibe. “Sleepwalking Past Hope” is a magnificent epic of “November Rain” proportions.

2. MAYHEM Ordo Ad Chao

MONDO GENERATOR recently returned from their European tour where front man Nick Oliveri checked in from the road with the following update:

“Eastern Baltic rock! There were tons of hot girls, but unfortunately none of them were at our gigs. Estonia was cool, but Bulgaria was the best as me and Ian got to sing ‘Sex and Violence‘ with THE EXPLOITED; I’ll never forget it,” says Oliveri recapping MONDO GENERATOR‘s recent European tour. “Warsaw is always a good time, but I haven’t played there since I played with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE 7 years ago. We had crazy drives through Serbia and Croatia going into Romania, where we got lost thinking we were taking an exit, but it was really an entrance. We had a great time playing for all the European fans and hope to get back there soon.”

MONDO GENERATOR’s new album Dead Planet landed in stores this week through Suburban Noize Records. The band is currently on the road all summer long on the second stage at Ozzfest 2007 and playing off dates with CIRCUS DIABLO. Dead Planet is already getting a strong reaction from radio where MONDO GENERATOR was the #3 most added on FMQB’s Loud Rock charts.

Recorded by producer Nick Raskulinecz at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606, Dead Planet is thunderous, raw rock ‘n’ roll at its best. The album has already generated significant critical acclaim upon European release.

MONDO GENERATOR was originally formed by ex-QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and KYUSS bassist Nick Oliveri in 1997. The band has previously released two critically acclaimed albums, their classic debut album Cocaine Rodeo in 2000 and 2003’s A Drug Problem That Never Existed. Initially intended as a side-project, the band has now become Oliveri’s full time venture.

MONDO GENERATOR is not a side-project anymore,” Oliveri says bluntly. “I used to do MONDO every now and then on spare time and now it’s my first choice. All other bands I play in have become my side-project, so in other words my mistress has now become my wife.”

So what does one of the biggest rock bands on earth have to offer with their new album, Era Vulgaris? Answer: Quite a solid album. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE have always existed on their own planet in terms of sound and style and Era Vulgaris does not deviate from this course. The loose jam-session of opening track, “Turning the Screw,” brings to mind a ZEPPELIN jam. The album’s first single, “Sick, sick, sick,” turns up things up with infectious guitar riffs and a stomping beat. “I’m Designer” provides Josh Homme‘s social commentary on the ills of his generation and features his ice cool vocals on a damn fine chorus. The song leaves the listener longing for more of the infectious chorus as it seems devilishly too short. “Into the Hollow” features some fantastic sweet, subtle guitar melodics and more of Josh Homme‘s sweet vocal lines. Other highlights include “3’s and 7’s,” the ending to “Suture Your Future,” and “River in the Road.” The rest of the album includes a healthy diversity of songs ranging from the rockin’ to the subdued. As things progress, things become less “radio friendly” and more musically stimulating. Era Vulgaris also sees mainman Josh Homme displaying some new vocal style/ranges, particular a higher range. There are a lot of cool subtleties throughout the album that only become apparent after subsequent listens. This only adds to the quality of the album after initial spins. All in all, Era Vulgaris is a quality work that is indicative of the healthy state of the QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE; other mainstreamers be damned. (Interscope Records)
