The Epic Kings and Idols Tour hit Los Angeles to a packed house.  Anticipation and enthusiasm were high. The merch booths were selling well as the crowd was littered with brand new shirts, particularly of KATATONIA and the DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT.

LA’s very own STOLEN BABIES were first up with their eccentric brand of heavy music.  Always up for a challenge in front of a straight up metal crowd, the band bashed through their set with all the charisma and energy that they show on their headlining shows.  It’s always cool to see  first time spectators have a bewildered look on their faces as they watch this crazy band that looked like they jumped out of the Beatlejuice movie.  They played a few songs off of their upcoming album, Naught, which sounded right at home with their debut, There Be Squabbles Ahead.  Vocals were a bit low in the mix but still a sweet performance.

The “Epic Kings & Idols Tour,” set for a September 2012 North American run, will feature  co-headliners, THE DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT and KATATONIA, direct support from PARADISE LOST, and opening duties from STOLEN BABIES.  Needless to say, this line up is absolutely killer.  Don’t miss out on STOLEN BABIES.  They were rudely excluded from the official press release of the tour.

PUSCIFER – V is for Vagina

In between his busy schedule of fronting TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE, Maynard Keenan has somehow found time to unleash yet another musical entity, PUSCIFER. While not a true solo album, V is for Vagina was composed primarily by Keenan, and serves as yet another glimpse in to the man’s twisted and imaginative mind. Musically, PUSCIFER is a different animal compared to the dense, complex progressive rock of TOOL or the lush melodies of A PERFECT CIRCLE, with Keenan exploring the worlds of trip hop and dub. However, similarities between his main acts can be found peppered throughout the album. “Queen B” opens things up in a non-chalant way with PRIMUS drummer Tim Alexander laying down some sturdy beats for Keenan to play around in with a trance-like hum and om interspersed with low-key spoken word. The plot thickens with the hidden arrangements and programming of “Dozo” to the dense atmosphere of “Vagina Mine,” which benefits from the tribal drumming and solid grooves of Gil and Rani Sharone of STOLEN BABIES. “Momma Sed” display’s the man’s talent for writing tuneful yet understated melodies replete with subtle hooks, and solid, yet quiet beats. But for all its creativity and variety, V is for Vagina is not a flawless album, with the preaching on “Sour Grapes” and the somewhat plodding “Drunk With Power” serving as less than exciting filler. But the sultry lounge number “Rev 22:20” however more than makes up for such shortcomings. It will be interesting to see what the world makes of PUSCIFER, as most of the powerful, evocative vocals of Keenan are vastly subdued for this album. Yet his charisma and inventive arrangements remain, with V is for Vagina delivering an original and unique entry in to the complex catalog of heavy alternative rock’s most enigmatic frontman. STOLEN BABIES: And the Circus Leaves Town

Los Angeles’ STOLEN BABIES are as twisted and imaginative as they come, both musically and visually. But the eclectic band’s natural talent shines in their ability to incorporate such creativity into crafting great songs. Each and every song is like a ride through a twisted carnival madhouse wonderland. STOLEN BABIES are not a band to be categorized, but their influences from the spectrum of rock are very apparent. Drummer Gil Sharone, who’s lent his talents to various musical entities including DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and PUSCIFIER, provided some insight into the band that somehow manages to make an accordion part of a kick ass band.

THE GATHERING Comment on North American Tour, Upcoming Live CD/DVD

THE GATHERING have commented about the recently announced one-off headlining show in New York City and their upcoming live CD and DVD, A Noise Severe.

Drummer Hans Rutten posts, “Dear all! We are going to do a one off special headlining show in New York city before we support our friends from LACUNA COIL for a mere two weeks! We are looking forward to come to the USA and Canada again. Hope to see you all somewhere! We just finished our tour in South America with the recordings of our live DVD and CD, and they went very, very well. We recorded in front of 4,000 totally crazy Chileans! It was one of the biggest highlights of the band’s career, and what makes it even more special is that we were able to capture this vibe on DVD. It will be called A Noise Severe, and a noise severe it was, with the audience alone hitting 104 db several times without the band playing!”

A Noise Severe is the follow-up to the well-received 2005 DVD, A Sound Relief.
