BEREFT – Leichenhaus

BEREFT‘s debut album, Leichenhaus, should not be mistaken for an unearnest attempt at doom metal nor merely as an unfocused side project band.  This is excellent doom created by true doom followers.  The band, comprised of members of INTRONAUT, ABYSMAL DAWN, NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW, and GRAVITON, draw inspiration from all over the subgenre’s history to create an ultra heavy, brooding, dark, and depressed experience. And how more doom can you get than an album centered on the concept of entering the realm of death?

In addition to the muscular, down tuned riffs, ritualistic drumming and gigantic, cavernous feel, there is a subtle trippy, atmospheric dimension, acoustic guitar embellishments as well as a healthy use of melody that helps distinguish BEREFT.  It must be said that vocalist/guitarist Charles Elliott‘s vocals are just godly on Leichenhaus.  His ultra low and long growls  fit the music just perfectly.  No doom band of this general style should be without a Charles Elliott.

Highlights can be found throughout the record.   “Withered Efflorescence” has a great main riff that the band does a great job of building on throughout the song.  “The Coldest Orchestra” has a nice juxtaposition of atmospheric, melodic, and dirty, heavy riffing.  “Ethereal Dispereal” has a great crawling lead guitar part and melancholic tone that would make classic, middle-era KATATONIA envious.  It is probably the crown jewel of the record.

Overall, Leichenhaus is a strong debut that will please fans of great doom such as MY DYING BRIDE, SKEPTICISM, and SLEEP while simultaneously sounding unique and fresh. (The End Records)

Doom Super Group BEREFT Signs to The End Records; April 24th, 2012 Release Date Announced

Doom super group BEREFT, featuring members of INTRONAUT, ABYSMAL DAWN, NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW and ex-THE FACELESS has signed to The End Records. The debut album Leichenhaus, a conceptual album thematically revolving around a waiting mortuary, is due April 24, 2012.

Vocalist/guitarist Charles Elliott has stated that BEREFT is all about, “dark, depressing doom…definitely different from what we do in our usual bands. It’s heavy as hell and we’re all really proud of how the record and collaboration came out, and we hope people feel the same way. Real music is birthed from pain, hatred, despair, suffering and regret and this is our bastard child.”

Members of INTRONAUT, ABYSMAL DAWN, THE FACELESS Surface BEREFT Project; Listen to New Song

BEREFT, a Los Angeles based doom band featuring Sacha Dunable of INTRONAUT/GRAVITON (guitars, backing vocals), Derek Donley of NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW/GRAVITON (drums, backing vocals), Charles Elliot of ABYSMAL DAWN (vocals, guitars), and Derek Rydquist formerly of THE FACELESS (bass, backing vocals), have posted a new song, “Withered Efflorescence“, on their Facebook page.

“This will give everyone a taste of what this band is about; dark, depressing, doom,” commented Charles Elliott. “Definitely different from what we do in our usual bands. It’s heavy as hell and we’re all really proud how the record and collaboration came out, and we hope people feel the same way.

“On this particular track Sacha and Derek D. worked together on the music while Derek R. and I worked on the lyrics. I’ve always envisioned vocal tradeoffs with Sacha on this one, ever since the demo he sent me years ago, so that’s what you hear on the chorus.

“This project has been on the back burner since 2008, so we hope people enjoy finally listening to it as much as we do.”

The debut album from BEREFT was recorded and mixed by drummer Derek Donley. Mastering has handled by Brian Elliott (EXHUMED, DYING FETUS) at Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, FL.

The band will be playing their first show on September 30th at The Handbag Factory in Downtown, Los Angeles.

MESHUGGAH w/ CYNIC and THE FACELESS @ Irving Plaza, New York, NY (2/19/09)

Both fans and scalpers alike converged in front of Irving Plaza scrambling for last minute tickets to MESHUGGAH‘s sold out return to New York back on February 19th, 2009. Braving harsh winds, frigid climate, and recession, devoted metal fans prevailed packing the main floor to the gills well before before opening act, THE FACELESS.

As one of the 200 bands featured on last year’s Summer Slaughter tour, THE FACELESS unfortunately lived up to their name and didn’t particularly stand out amongst the competition. With the daunting task of opening up for two influential, highly acclaimed acts, THE FACELESS held their composure, but did little to impress. The band offered a surplus of arpeggios, sweeps, blast beats, and technical tomfoolery, but provided little in the way of memorable riffs or a powerful live experience. The apathetic crowd was unmoved, and the band looked just as bored playing the material as the audience was to hear it.

Up next was CYNIC, who I hadn’t seen in some 15 years since their tour with CANNIBAL CORPSE and SINISTER.  The band launched in to a subdued, introspective performance, perfectly recreating the experience of their new album Traced in Air. CYNIC effortlessly transitioned between newer tracks, such as “The Space for This,” and classics from Focus such as “Veil of Maya“, “How Could I” and “A Celestial Voyage“. The crowd wasn’t particularly fired up as much as they were captivated, and offered a rousing applause upon set’s end.
