THE GATHERING Announce New Singer, Album Details for The West Pole

THE GATHERING have finally announced their new singer, Silje Wergeland (OCTAVIA SPERATI). She will make her debut on the band’s new album, The West Pole. The album is set for an April 2009 release via the band’s Psychonaut Records.

Here is official word from the band:

“The waiting is over!!.

“The highly acclaimed and influential Dutch band THE GATHERING is finally back releasing their 9th studio album: The West Pole.

“The band set their sails for a fresh new era. During their past 8 studio albums THE GATHERING (celebrating their 20th anniversary this year) has showed that they have never been afraid of changing and evolving their musical style. The West Pole shows that The Gathering still stands amongst the pioneers of alternative rock music as they always have!

“After van Giersbergen leaving, the band started working on new songs and finding a new singer. Finally vocalist Silje Wergeland from Norway completed the band’s line up. Silje has been the singer of the Norwegian band OCTAVIA SPERATI for 8 years including several other projects.

The West Pole also includes two very talented guest singers: the Dutch Anne van den Hoogen and Mexican Marcela Bovio (from STREAM OF PASSION). The West Pole is a very vital, atmospheric and extravert rock orientated album, with all the quality and power THE GATHERING is so famous for, also with many new elements. The sound is guitar driven, alive and urgent; a strong and beautifully coloured album with haunting female vocals. It’s produced by guitar player René Rutten and mixed & mastered by Zlaya Hadzich, who also did the production of Souvenirs. The West Pole is nothing less than a piece of masterwork!”

Anneke van Giersbergen‘s departure from THE GATHERING was certainly a surprising announcement. But with a rapid turnaround not remotely metallic, it appeared to be a necessary move for van Giersbergen to foster creative explorations. On the surface however, AGUA DE ANNIQUE treads the same waters of latter-day THE GATHERING. Though that’s every bit satisfying, it leaves a bit to be desired without much true differentiation. Regardless, Air is a relaxed album of enjoyable post-metal, gothic-tinged, indie rock, driven by Anneke‘s familiar voice. “Day After Yesterday,” “My Girl,” and “Sunken Soldiers Ball” are soft yet pleasant songs in a happier key not far from COLDPLAY-level adult contemporary, whatever-rock. On the more haunting end are tracks like “Ice Water” and “Trail of Grief,” which are dressed with darker melodies and parallel works of ANATHEMA and/or IN THE WOODS… The album’s best track is clearly “Yalin,” a song who’s vocal melodies change up beautifully between verse, pre-chorus, and chorus. Despite the too familiar sounds (songwriting, vocals, instrumentation), AGUA DE ANNIQUE‘s debut album is thoroughly positive and enjoyable. Let’s just hope that the band continues to grow and develop away from the familiar territory of its singer’s former band. (The End Records)

THE GATHERING – A Noise Severe

The only way to follow up an award winning DVD in A Sound Relief is to release another award worthy-DVD. A Noise Severe is packed with an abundance of the highest quality content that the band could include. The first disc is composed of THE GATHERING’s live performance in Santiago, Chile in front of 4,000 enthusiastic fans. The atmosphere of the vibe is simply electric as the band and the crowd constantly feed off each other’s energy making for a really fantastic performance. THE GATHERING put on a near-flawless show with plenty of smiles on the band’s faces throughout. As far as the two hour setlist goes, there is a really nice blend of songs from all albums of the Anneke van Giersbergen-era. The biggest thrill for many will undoubtedly be the inclusion of half of the landmark Mandylion album. The visuals are great in not only the fact that the stage presentation is top-notch but there are numerous cameras that allow for multiple views of the show. The second disc is comprised of a documentary of the making of the Home album and various video clips of songs from albums. The documentary, “Homemade,” is a very candid and insightful look into not only the writing process for Home but also a look into the personalities and lives of the band. You come away feeling a greater appreciation for the band as well as getting a new perspective on the album. Overall, this is simply one of the best music DVD releases available. The double CD version of A Noise Severe serves as a quality stand alone release due to the fantastic mix, performance, and the compelling atmosphere of the show that translates easily into an audio format. A Noise Severe is also a perfect snapshot in the life of the band near the end of the Anneke van Giersbergen-era. (The End Records)

THE GATHERING Comment on North American Tour, Upcoming Live CD/DVD

THE GATHERING have commented about the recently announced one-off headlining show in New York City and their upcoming live CD and DVD, A Noise Severe.

Drummer Hans Rutten posts, “Dear all! We are going to do a one off special headlining show in New York city before we support our friends from LACUNA COIL for a mere two weeks! We are looking forward to come to the USA and Canada again. Hope to see you all somewhere! We just finished our tour in South America with the recordings of our live DVD and CD, and they went very, very well. We recorded in front of 4,000 totally crazy Chileans! It was one of the biggest highlights of the band’s career, and what makes it even more special is that we were able to capture this vibe on DVD. It will be called A Noise Severe, and a noise severe it was, with the audience alone hitting 104 db several times without the band playing!”

A Noise Severe is the follow-up to the well-received 2005 DVD, A Sound Relief.

NAPALM DEATH – Smear Campaign

NAPALM DEATH have been blasting skulls in for over two decades now, which is remarkable considering that many of the band’s newest fans were still swimming around in their daddy’s nutsacks when the groundbreaking Scum was unleashed on an unsuspecting world. Smear Campaign, the band’s latest onslaught, sees the band continue their tradition of fast, furious forward-thinking grindcore with an invigorating energy that band’s half their age would kill for. Sandwiched between two dark, atmospheric tracks, “Weltschmerz” and the title cut, is a collection of fourteen aggressive, incinerating tracks all of which deliver fine examples of why the band continues to reign as leaders in the world of extreme music. “Puritanical Punishment Beating” offers one of the album’s many highlights with its incorporation of several different time and tempo changes in between the blasting intensity the mixes things up effectively. “In Deference” also adds some nice variety to the proceedings with an unlikely contribution from THE GATHERING‘s Anneke Von Giersbergen, whose haunting vocals complement the band’s vicious assault. Even though the band’s previous album, The Code is Red, was by no means a weak or mellow album, there’s an urgency and vitality to Smear Campaign that pushes the band’s intensity level to a higher degree, quickly and easily leaving all the competition in the dust. Another triumph for the kings of grind. (Century Media Records)
