Varg Vikernes Back In Prison Following Attempted Jailbreak

October 28, 2003

Varg Vikernes, a.k.a. Count Grishnack of BURZUM, who has been serving a 21-year sentence for the 1993 murder of MAYHEM guitarist, Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous), and his involvement with a series of church burnings, was captured by the Norwegian police after he failed to return to authorities following his short leave from prison this weekend.

Vikernes, who was originally held at the low-security prison, Berg, in Tønsberg, Norway, was granted a short 17-hour leave. A manhunt ensued after he failed to return as scheduled, but he was captured by police after a short car chase just outside Oslo.

Now back in custody, Vikernes will likely be transferred to a high-security prison and also face charges of armed robbery in connection with his attempted jailbreak.

Details about the investigation are being kept under a tight lid as the police department, the defense ministry and the police’s special national security unit, PST, have jointly launched a massive hunt for several people who are believed to have helped Vikernes in his escape from prison.
